The Hindu5 days ago
India will attempt to give a 'new form' to the BRICS next year, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his intervention at the grouping's summit in Rio De Janeiro on Monday (July 7, 2025), as the Indian side prepared to take over the leadership of BRICS from current president Brazil.
'Under India's BRICS presidency, we will work to define BRICS in a new form. BRICS will mean Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability. Just as, during our G-20 chairmanship, we gave priority to the issues of the Global South in the agenda, similarly during our chairmanship of BRICS, we will take this forum forward in the spirit of people-centricity and humanity first,' said Mr. Modi speaking at the session on Environment, COP 30 and Global Health.

Mr. Modi dealt with a number of topics, including the post-pandemic recovery of the global economy and sought global cooperation in combating common threats and said, 'The COVID pandemic taught us that viruses do not come taking visas, and solutions, too are not chosen by looking at passports. The solution to common challenges is possible only through joint efforts.'
Earlier, talking at a segment of the BRICS summit in Rio De Janeiro, Mr. Modi shared the Indian position on Artificial Intelligence and said, 'We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities. Guided by the mantra of 'AI for All', India is actively using AI in many sectors. We believe that AI governance, addressing concerns and encouraging innovation should both receive equal priority.'
Mr. Modi also held a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. Among those who met the Indian Prime Minister were President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez of Cuba, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, President Yamandu Orsi of Uruguay and President of Bolivia Luis Alberto Arce Catacora.
'We talked about the need for improving and diversifying trade linkages on a priority basis. We discussed how we can collaborate in sectors such as digital technology, critical minerals, healthcare, space and more. Also conveyed my best wishes on the historic occasion of Bolivia's 200 years of Independence,' said Mr. Modi.
Mr. Modl's participation in the closing day of the 17th BRICS summit will be followed by a state visit to Brazil that is scheduled to begin on 8 July at the Alvorado Palace. During his stay in Brasilia, Mr. Modi will hold restricted and delegation-level talks and attend a lunch hosted by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. India and Brazil are expected to sign agreements following official talks.

Fired Citi banker sues bank over 'nightmare' comment fallout

Ann Watson, a top boss at Citibank in London, got fired after saying something shocking in a job interview. During an online meeting for a new role inside the bank, she told Kapil, an Indian-origin interviewer, that her project failed because she worked with Indians. "No offence to you," she added, "but you know what Indians are like to work with. It's a nightmare." The interview was stopped right away, and she was put in a virtual waiting room. When it restarted, she told Kapil: "Now it's your chance to get me back." A month later, Citi fired her for these comments. Watson, who was 55, is now suing Citi. She claims her firing was unfair and that the bank discriminated against her. Why? She says she was suffering from menopause and long COVID at the time. These health problems caused "brain fog" and memory loss, so she can't remember making those remarks about Indian workers. Even though she says sorry now, she argues Citi didn't care about her 12 years of service or her health struggles. "I was horrified," she stated, adding she'd never blame a culture for work failures. Citibank isn't backing down. They say Watson's health problems don't excuse racist behavior. After a fair investigation, they fired her for "gross misconduct." The bank's lawyers insist menopause and long COVID couldn't make someone say such things. Citi employs over 32,000 people in India, its second-biggest workforce after the U.S., and takes discrimination seriously. Top leaders like Vis Raghavan (banking head) and Anand Selvakesari (COO) are of Indian origin, showing the country's key role at Citi. This London court case could change how companies handle health issues and discrimination. Watson's lawyers claim menopause is a protected disability under UK law, so firing her broke equality rules. Experts say the result might affect how bosses treat staff with menopause or long COVID symptoms globally. Meanwhile, Citi faces scrutiny over workplace culture, especially after promises to improve diversity following the Black Lives Matter protests. The outcome will decide if Watson gets compensation, and whether health struggles can ever justify offensive remarks.

Skilled And Empowered Youth At Core Of PM Modi's Vision For Viksit Bharat By 2047: Jayant Chaudhary

Crores of youth have been equipped with industry-relevant skills across sectors ranging from traditional and healthcare to artificial intelligence and automotive, the minister said On 15th July 2015, the Government of India launched the Skill India Mission under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an initiative that envisioned not just jobs, but a future built on self-reliance, dignity, and confidence. The transformation began in 2014 with the establishment of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. With the launch of the Skill India Mission, India's youth would no longer be defined by degrees, but by their skills and potential to shape the nation's future. Marking 10 years of this vision serves as a key milestone to reflect on achievements and chart the path ahead. What began as a government initiative soon evolved into a powerful mass movement, capturing the aspirations and struggles of youth across the country. From rural villages to urban centres, remote mountain regions to bustling metros, the identity of a skilled India began to take firm root. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), more than 1.63 crore youth have been trained across 38 sectors. Of these, 45% are women, and a significant proportion come from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, young Indians who were once distanced from education and opportunity are now reshaping their futures through skill. Reflecting on the 10-year journey and vision of the Skill India Mission, Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said, 'India's most powerful asset is its youth. Acknowledging this, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has always positioned young Indians at the heart of the nation's economic, educational, and technological vision. Under the Skill India initiatives, crores of youth have been equipped with industry-relevant skills across sectors ranging from traditional and healthcare to artificial intelligence and automotive. These initiatives have effectively bridged the gap, empowering the youth with practical, job-ready capabilities. As we look ahead to a Viksit Bharat by 2047, it is this confident and skilled generation that will be its true architects. I am confident that the Ministry's continued and dedicated efforts will make a tangible impact on the skilling landscape of the country." India's technical education system too has undergone a major transformation over the past decade. The number of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) has grown from around 10,000 to 14,615, and student enrolment has jumped from 9.5 lakh to over 14 lakh. Today, technical education is no longer confined to classrooms; institutions like the Indian Institute of Skills are preparing youth for global standards and emerging industries. The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, launched in 2023, added a new dimension to this vision. So far, over 22.24 lakh traditional artisans have received formal training, modern toolkits, and financial assistance under the scheme. When Prime Minister Modi presented his vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the Skill India Mission emerged as a backbone of this national dream: to make India the Skill Capital of the World. The journey of the past ten years is a testament that this is more than just a policy; it is a lived reality. It is the story of a young woman who now supports her family with her sewing machine and the journey of a once-unemployed youth who today supervises a construction team. It is the transformation of millions who, through the power of skill, rewrote their destinies and redefined India's identity. Ten years ago, the Skill India Mission began as a dream. Today, it stands as a movement of transformation, dignity, and aspiration. 15th July 2025 is not just a date; it is a celebration of a decade of effort, perseverance, and the collective dreams of millions who dared to believe. This journey is far from over. With every new skill acquired, it deepens and widens, paving the way for a New India, where talent speaks louder than privilege, and skill is the true identity of progress. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 20:25 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
