From ‘contrarian views' on 3-language policy to Rs 2,152 crore SSA funds: CM Stalin writes to PM Modi
'The CM has requested the PM to clear the central share of Rs 2,151.59 crore for the year 2024-25 and the first instalment for 2025-26, without mandating (Tamil Nadu to) sign the PM SHRI agreement (vis-a-vis funds),' an official release on the memorandum read.
Tamil Nadu's Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu handed over the communication to PM Modi on behalf of Stalin, who is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital here after he complained of dizziness on July 21
PM Modi is in Tiruchirappalli to preside over the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival in Gangaikonda Cholapuram on Sunday, on account of the birth anniversary of the king Rajendra Chola-I.
CM Stalin, in the memorandum, pointed out that the Centre not sanctioning the required funds 'affects the future of lakhs of students'. He also said the state has made it clear it will stick to its decades-long 2-language formula of Tamil and English.
Further, Stalin sought approval for the Coimbatore and Madurai metro rail initiatives, proposed on a 50:50 ratio.
He also flagged the recurring arrests of Indian fishermen from the state, seeking steps for the release of those currently under Sri Lanka's custody.
On Sunday, PM Modi is expected to go on a roadshow from the helipad to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, where he is set to release a commemorative coin to honour the legendary Chola king.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has curated special exhibitions on Chola Shaivism and temple architecture, according to an official release. This is in addition to heritage walks and guided tours organised to offer rare insights into the cultural and architectural legacy of the period.
A concert, led by music maestro Ilayaraja on Tiruvasagam, is said to be among the highlights.
TN Governor RN Ravi, Finance Minister Thenarasu, Hindu Religious and Chartiable Endowments Minister PK Sekar Babu, Transport Minister SS Sivasankar and Union Minister L Murugan are among the other dignitaries expected to be present at the event.

Among the major issues discussed were empanelment of third-party auditors for fire clearances, creation of a common application form for No Objection Certificates (NOCs), extension of third-party certification for building plan approvals, and linking databases of agencies such as MCD, NDMC, DPCC, FSSAI, GST, and Labour government is also exploring the adoption of Tripura's self-certification model for industries with investments up to Rs 2 crore, and third-party audit for larger ones. It was also proposed to align MCD zones with revenue districts and bring local offices of departments such as health, education and PWD under the coordination of district AR Department has been tasked with developing a standardised inspection format for district-level review of services like roads, drains, hospitals and schools. The reforms are aimed at transforming Delhi into a preferred investment destination by fostering a transparent, accountable, and citizen-friendly business environment.

Six Naxals arrested, explosives seized in Chhattisgarh
Agency: Sukma, Aug 2 (PTI) Six Naxalites have been arrested from Sukma and Bijapur districts of Chhattisgarh, police said on Saturday. Podiyam Nanda (40) who carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head, Hemla Joga (28), and Hemla Ganga (45) were arrested and explosives were seized from them in Sukma district on Friday, a senior police official said. They were apprehended from a forest in Rabdipara village under the Kerlapal police station limits during an anti-Naxal operation of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), local police and 159th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Nanda was active as a militia commander under Kerlapal Area Committee of the outlawed Maoist organization while the other two were its members, the official said. Two `tiffin-bombs' weighing 3 kg each, three detonators, two gelatin rods, cordex wires, electric fuse wires and two batteries were recovered from them, he added. In Bijapur district, three lower-rung Maoist cadres, identified as Sukki Hemla (50), Soma Uika (35) and Kallu Hapka (22), were apprehended on Saturday from a forest between Peddakorma and Bodla-Pusnar villages under the Bijapur police station limits, another police official said. The DRG, local police, along with 222nd battalion of CRPF, as well as 201st and 202nd battalions of CRPF's elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) were out on an operation in the area, he added. Maoist uniforms, Naxal literature, a colour printer machine and other items were recovered from their possession, he said. The trio were involved in a gunfight with security forces on July 29 in the forest of Peddakorma-Bodla-Pusnar villages of the district, the official added. Argument breaks out between MLA and MP in Tamil Nadu govt function
Theni, Aug 2 (PTI) An argument broke out between an MLA and an MP of the ruling DMK here on Saturday, and they allegedly exchanged expletives on the dais in a government function. A video clip of the incident went viral on social media, in which officials could be seen pacifying the elected representatives. The MLA was A Maharajan (Andipatti Assembly constituency) and the MP was Thanga Tamilselvan (Theni). Allegedly, according to the video clip, the starting point of the argument appeared to be giving away to beneficiaries 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin" scheme-related papers. The elected representatives allegedly exchanged expletives.
