Walt Disney posted better-than-expected quarterly results and raised its annual profit forecast on Wednesday, led by gains in streaming business, which is expected to be the centrepiece of its growth strategy in the coming years. In the last 24 hours, the media and entertainment company entered two major deals with the National Football League and WWE as it readies its $29.99-per-month ESPN streaming service that will give viewers access to sporting events, including the NFL and National Basketball Association.Adjusted earnings per share rose 16% from a year ago to $1.61 for Disney's fiscal third quarter. Analysts had expected $1.47, according to the LSEG data. The WWE deal will bring exclusive rights to major wrestling events, including WrestleMania and Royal Rumble to the streaming service, set to launch August 21.CEO Bob Iger said the launch of the ESPN app and the NFL deal, along with a coming integration of Hulu into Disney+, would create "a truly differentiated streaming proposition".The NFL will take a 10% equity stake in Disney's ESPN sports network. The deal values were not disclosed. The company has been building its streaming business in sports and entertainment as traditional TV viewing declines. It is also expanding its popular theme parks and cruise lines. For the full year ending in September, the company projected adjusted EPS of $5.85, a 10-cent rise from prior forecasts."With ambitious plans ahead for all our businesses, we're not done building, and we are excited for Disney's future," Iger said. The company projected it would add 10 million Disney+ and Hulu subscribers in the current quarter, most of them from an expanded partnership with cable operator Charter. In the just-ended quarter, Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions increased by 2.6 million to 183 million, powering a 6% increase in revenue at the direct-to-consumer business. The unit posted an operating income of $346 million, compared with a loss of $19 million a year ago.Operating income in the entertainment division fell 15% to $1 billion. Disney attributed the drop to lower results from traditional television networks and the strong performance of the film "Inside Out 2" a year earlier.Disney's parks division reported a 13% gain in operating income to $2.5 billion. Profit at domestic parks rose 22% even with new competition in Orlando, Florida, from Universal's Epic Universe, which opened in late May, as visitors increased their spending.Walt Disney World in Orlando posted record revenue for the quarter, Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston said.At the sports unit, operating income rose 29% to $1 billion. Domestic ESPN profit fell 3%, partly from higher programming and production costs, including rate increases for NBA games and college sports.

NBA analyst ranks Patrick Mahomes ahead of Lamar Jackson, throws shade at Joe Burrow

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a devastating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Although many would expect this to affect players' rankings, NFL analyst Nick Wright remains vocal and adamant in his support for Patrick Mahomes as the best quarterback at the moment. Usually adopting four quarterbacks for his premium list, Wright stirred a controversy by claiming only three names claim the credit now. File photo of Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow (9) (AP) Who did Nick Wright drop off the list? During a recent episode of his show 'What's Wright?', the anchor claimed that Mahomes still claims the top rank in his list. In addition, he shortened his list of quarterbacks from four to three, making the choice to drop the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow. 'It's not currently a big four in the NFL; it's a big three. It's really a big one, and then two other guys,' he claimed. Wright then clarified his stance by explaining, 'I do not think it's fair to penalize Lamar so much for bad playoff performances that he drops beneath a player who hasn't been in the playoffs the last 2 years in Joe Burrow.' The Bengals have been missing in action from the playoffs since 2022. 'I love Joe, but he starts the year slowly. He does have an embarrassment of riches on the outside, catching the ball,' Wright added. 'If somebody says Jalen Hurts is 4, and what you're losing in the prolific stats Joe Burrow gives you, you're adding in toughness, availability, the tush push, and huge playoff moments. And Joe's biggest accomplishment ever is being 1-1 against Patrick in AFC Championship games.' He then listed out his top names by saying, 'Here's what my rankings would look like. If I were doing it, I would go one Patrick, two Josh, three Lamar, four Joe, five Stafford, six Jalen Hurts, seven with an asterisk of it's probably too early, but I give it to him, Jayden Daniels. Eight, Baker.' Joe Burrow's performance metric Regardless of Wright's reasons for his list, Burrow being left out of not only his top four but also his top eight has caught many fans by surprise. During the 2024 season, Burrow managed to lead the league in passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and yards per game. His career completion percentage currently stands at 68.6%, as per StatMuse. When it comes to career win percentages, Mahomes leads the way with a .797. Jackson ranks just behind him with a .716, and Allen has a .675 win percentage himself. Burrow himself currently sports a percentage of .572, as reported by The Sports Rush. I love when people around me are funny: Stephanie Beatriz on 'Twisted Metal'

New Delhi, Hollywood actor Stephanie Beatriz says moving from the popular sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" to the wild world of "Twisted Metal" was thrilling as she found herself among a talented group of actors who pushed her to perform at her best. I love when people around me are funny: Stephanie Beatriz on 'Twisted Metal' "I just love jokes and I love when people around me are funny and just killing it in jokes," Beatriz, who shot to fame for her deadpan portrayal of police officer Rosa Diaz in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", told PTI in an interview. In "Twisted Metal", the 44-year-old actor plays the role of Quiet, a fierce and unpredictable car thief with a tragic past, who teams up with Anthony Mackie's John Doe on a high-stakes journey across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The show, based on the popular video game of the same name, started in 2023 and recently returned with its second season on SonyLIV. Beatriz, also known for her work in Disney's animated film "Encanto" and filmmaker Jon M Chu musical "In the Heights", called "Twisted Metal" a "structurally different" project. "My role on 'Brooklyn' was really to be the straight man for a lot of really zany comedians around me. And in this, I get to be the straight man to John's zaniness, but I too get to play in that goofy world. It's very different and it's fun," she said, adding that the new season features many characters who are "funny". "One of the coolest things about being on set was that you're surrounded by these really funny people, comedians, actors, who are sort of making you step your game up. That was really joyful and fun. I loved that," Beatriz said. "Twisted Metal" is set in a dystopian America where civilization has collapsed and society is divided into violent city-states. Amid this lawless wasteland, a mysterious figure named Calypso hosts a deadly tournament where drivers compete in weaponised vehicles for a chance to have their greatest wish granted. The series follows John Doe and Quiet as they strive to survive brutal battles, forge unlikely alliances, and chase a shot at redemption. Asked about the fascination of storytellers with the concept of dystopia, Beatriz said humans have always been curious about disasters and how people might respond when everything falls apart. "You can go back to cave dwellings and see disaster, like 'what are we gonna do if this happens?' I think we, collectively, want to see how human beings would react in the worst possible scenario because we don't know what that will be like for us. That hasn't happened to us." People like to explore extreme situations in stories because they reflect real emotions like "grief, fear, and anxiety", she added. The actor said the show portrays themes like the divide between the rich and the poor, the desire for fairness, and the hope for change. " is a big part of our show, the people inside the walls and the people outside the walls, and who decides who gets in and why certain people have to stay out and is there a way to create a society that is more equal and they're given that opportunity with the tournament. "Because Calypso says anybody can enter this tournament. It's a fair game for anyone. And if you win, you get your greatest wish granted." Developed by Michael Jonathan Smith, "Twisted Metal' season two also stars Joe Seanoa, Will Arnett, Thomas Haden Church, and Anthony Carrigan.
