Man rides bike through flooded streets of Surat; viral video sparks awe and anger

Gujarat has been battered by heavy rains since Sunday, June 22, with the state receiving over 100mm of rainfall. The downpour has led to severe waterlogging, blocked roads, and a flood-like situation, particularly in low-lying areas. On Tuesday, continuous rain shattered a 40-year-old rainfall record in Surat.
Amid the chaos, a video from Surat has gone viral, capturing a man riding a two-wheeler through waterlogged streets while others wade through the knee-deep water.
The video was shared by Brut India on Instagram (@brut.india) with the caption, 'A commuter was seen riding a two-wheeler while others waded through the flooded roads of Gujarat's Surat. A flood-like situation erupted in the city after incessant rains in the region since Sunday. Over 100mm of rainfall blocked roads leading to in the low-lying areas. The city received continuous rainfall on Tuesday, shattering a 40-year record. Several parts of Gujarat are expected to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms until June 27th.'

Many users were stunned that the bike was still able to function in such conditions. One user said, 'Whichever bike that is, they ought to use it for their company ad. Cuz damn!!'
Some users criticised the state of Gujarat's civic infrastructure and political environment. One user commented, 'I'm from Gujarat. This was destined to happen in a corrupt government and municipality. Nowadays even Rakhi Sawant will win in Gujarat with BJP's ticket. This is the level of political blindness in Gujarat.'
Another user pointed out the deeper problem behind the water logging, '100mm of rainfall = just 10 cm. This is a clear indicator of clogged drainage systems. Why do they clog? Coz people with zero civic sense and responsibility towards society think it's okay to dump trash on the road.'
A fourth user highlighted chronic mismanagement in local governance, writing, 'This just because of learned municipal commissioner and unlearned corporators. Every year, crores of rupees are swallowed for cleaning drainage and gutter lines. But the result is zero. If all drainage and gutters are clean, there is no problem of water or flood-like situation. And we people deserve this as we do not have guts to ask questions.'
Heavy rainfall continues to affect districts across the Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Morbi. As of Thursday, 170 talukas were impacted by the downpour. Maliya Hatina in Junagadh recorded the highest rainfall with 135mm, followed by Mahuva in Surat with 121mm till 8 PM.

Key areas including Connaught Place, ITO, Pragati Maidan, GTK Depot, and others were waterlogged. The situation has sparked off a political sparring over BJP-led Delhi government's monsoon preparedness. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders shared videos of waterlogged locations. Sharing a clip of severely waterlogged roads of Connaught Place, AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal took to 'X' and wrote, 'When this is the condition of Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, it's not hard to imagine the state of the rest of Delhi. Just 10 minutes of rain and the roads have turned into ponds. In 5 months, where has the BJP brought Delhi to? Is this the speed of the 'four-engine' government?" However, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta inspected the waterlogged locations on Tuesday and instructed officials to ensure proper arrangements for water drainage. 'Today, a surprise inspection of the waterlogging situation was conducted in ITO. Interacted with local people to gather information about the actual situation. Bridge collapses after monsoon rains villagers protest with traditional music and dance

BHILWARA: After the monsoon rains, a bridge on a road in the Kachhola area of Bhilwara district collapsed on Tuesday. In response, the villagers protested in a unique way, demanding the reconstruction of the bridge by playing traditional Alghoza music and dancing to express their demands to the govt and administration. The impact of the weather department's warning was evident in Bhilwara district, where heavy rains affected daily life in the Mandalgarh assembly area on Sunday, Monday, and early Tuesday morning. The bridge between Kataria Kheda, Umedpura, and Khajuria in the Kachhola police station area, built a few months ago, collapsed after the recent rains. The protesters stated that the bridge was destroyed by the rain. Children from Kachhola to Kheda attend school in Umedpura village, and even light rain halts their commute. Often, during deliveries or illnesses, residents of Kataria Kheda cannot reach Umedpura village. The main route to Kachhola town is also affected, causing significant inconvenience. As a result, after the bridge collapsed due to rain, people protested by performing the famous Mewar Alghoza music and dancing. Regarding this issue, regional BJP MLA Gopal Khandelwal mentioned that this time, the rain god was generous in the Mandalgarh assembly area, leading to numerous reports of bridge collapses and damaged roads. He instructed officials to repair the roads and bridges wherever they were damaged in the assembly area.

Delhi downpour triggers waterlogging, traffic chaos — and political sparring

A spell of heavy rain on Tuesday morning threw the national capital into chaos — key roads from Connaught Place to ITO were waterlogged, triggering traffic chaos across arterial routes and inconveniencing commuters. It also sparked off a war of words over the monsoon preparedness. The opposition Aam Aadmi Party took several potshots against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), even as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh highlighted swift action by the government to ensure the return to normalcy across city roads. The Safdarjung observatory, the primary weather station, logged 68.1 mm on Tuesday. Ridge reported 129.8 mm rainfall, Lodi Road 72.4 mm, Pragati Maidan 45.6 mm, Pusa 37.5 mm, and Ayanagar 23.4 mm. Other areas received light rainfall, with Palam recording 4.6 mm, Janakpuri 4 mm, and Najafgarh 1.5 mm. The highest rainfall logged in a day last year (July 26) was 39.4 mm. Following Tuesday's downpour, the monthly average rainfall in the city surpassed the long-period average of 195.8 mm. The total rainfall so far this month stood at 220.2 mm, as per IMD data. Meanwhile, the city's air quality improved. The AQI (air quality index) went up from 86 the day before to 72. The Capital's air has remained 'satisfactory' for an entire month, mainly due to the rain and wind conditions, according to the weather department. The maximum temperature on Tuesday was six notches below normal at 29.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was near normal at 26.8 degrees Celsius. Key roads flooded Through the day, visuals of flooded streets emerged from Connaught Place, Panchkuian Road, Qutub Road in Sadar Bazaar, Janpath and Savitri Flyover, Zakhira Railway underpass, and Ring Road, among other parts. Other waterlogged areas included Old Rohtak Road, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Sarai Kale Khan, Mayapuri Chowk, Mukarba Chowk to Model Town Road, near Town Hall in Chandni Chowk, Azadpur Block G, Daryaganj, Kamla Nagar market, Laxmi Nagar, Old Rohtak Road, and Majnu Ka Tila main road. An auto rickshaw driver in Connaught Place, Kuldeep Singh (50), rued, 'Whether it is a BJP government or AAP, nobody wants to help the public. They all know that this becomes a problem every year… our business suffers due to all this.' CM Gupta acknowledged the widespread waterlogging, but claimed that the rainwater was drained out within a short period. 'Our teams had been active since early morning and were continuously monitoring every affected point. Officials and staff are conducting a detailed assessment of how long water remained at each location, how quickly it was drained, and what further measures can be taken for improvement,' she told reporters. As PWD's Flood Control department reported over 100 calls, Minister Singh took to X and posted videos of Minto Bridge, Moolchand Underpass, and Pul Prahaldpur, claiming that after the BJP came to power, roads that were waterlogged earlier are now clear. However, former CM and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Atishi, hit out at the BJP government. 'Delhi roads have become ponds in just ten minutes of rainfall,' she wrote in a social media post. AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj shared a video of an inundated ITO and said, 'This is Delhi's ITO. On July 9, L-G (VK Saxena) sahab and the PWD Minister had come here to inspect the work to clear waterlogging, congratulating each other for the good work. Today, with waterlogging again, please accept my congratulations as well.' He also shared a purported video of the Centre-run Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, under the New Delhi Municipal Council's jurisdiction, where people were seen wading through knee-deep water. According to NDMC officials, the rainfall received was higher than the expected capacity. 'Water receded within an hour as we installed pumps and desilted drains in Connaught Place and Janpath,' an official said. According to the IMD's seven-day forecast, a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain is forecast on Wednesday. The Met department has predicted the possibility of rain with thunderstorms or lightning during this period. As a result, temperatures are expected to remain below normal as per the IMD.
