KTR slams Shah over inaction against corruption allegations on T'gana govt

Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao has launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding to know why the BJP-led Centre has failed to order an investigation into the corruption allegations against the Congress government in Telangana, a release from BRS PRO said.
Reminding Shah of his remarks made earlier in Nizamabad, where he called the Revanth Reddy-led government an "ATM" for the Congress high command, KTR questioned, "Why hasn't the Union Home Minister acted upon it? What is stopping the Centre from initiating a probe through the CBI or ED?"
Alleging a covert understanding between the BJP and Congress, KTR said, "In Delhi, they stage a mock fight. In Telangana, they strike secret deals. Is BJP shielding Revanth Reddy because it cannot take on BRS alone?"
KTR reminded that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had once accused the Congress of running a "RR Tax" scam in Telangana, but no investigation was initiated. "If you only make allegations during visits, but allow Congress to loot in broad daylight, what message are you sending to the people?" he asked.
The BRS leader also took strong exception to what he described as an orchestrated campaign to defame the Kaleshwaram Project, which played a pivotal role in making Telangana the top rice-producing state in the country. "Unfortunately, a landmark irrigation initiative like Kaleshwaram is being targeted purely for political gain," he said.
On the BJP's developmental record in the state, KTR noted, "Despite eight BJP MPs and two Union Ministers from Telangana, not a single project has been given national status. No IIT, IIM, or central medical institute has been granted. This discrimination hasn't gone unnoticed."
KTR also ridiculed the Centre's repeated "launches" of the Turmeric Board, pointing out that Union Minister Piyush Goyal had already virtually inaugurated it earlier this year. "Now Amit Shah is cutting ribbons for the same office set up in a building constructed by former CM KCR. Not a single rupee was allocated in the budget. Even a permanent building hasn't been sanctioned," he said.
The BRS leader further accused the BJP of betraying Telangana through multiple acts: scrapping the Bayyaram Steel Plant, meant to employ tribal youth.
Cancelling Hyderabad's ITIR project, which would have been a game-changer and pushing forward Andhra Pradesh's Banakacharla project, while curbing Telangana farmers' water rights.
Privatising the operations of Kazipet Coach Factory, thereby dashing youth employment hopes in Warangal, he further alleged.
"Since coming to power at the Centre, BJP has treated Telangana with hostility. The people have rejected them before and will continue to do so", KTR said in his statement.

Shimla: Amidst the ongoing tussle between the Congress govt and governor Shiv Pratap in Himachal Pradesh over the appointment of vice-chancellors of two universities in Solan and Palampur, the legislative assembly on Tuesday again passed The Himachal Pradesh Universities of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry (Amendment) Bill, 2023 without any amendment, insisting that the democratically elected govt must have a role in the appointment of the VCs. When Himachal Vidhan Sabha again passed this Bill on Tuesday, without carrying out any changes in the document passed earlier on Sept 21, 2023, the opposition BJP legislators had already left the House in protest over the issue of defying legislative assembly traditions and democratic norms. The Bill, presented by agriculture minister Chander Kumar, provides that the governor, functioning as chancellor of universities, shall appoint the VCs "on the aid and advice of the govt" since the state govt issues grant-in-aid to these institutions. Until now, the VCs were appointed by the chancellor on the recommendations of a selection committee comprising a nominee of the chancellor, director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and the chairperson of the Universities Grants Commission or his nominee. Earlier, the Amendment Bill was sent to the governor for assent in 2023. As it was pending for a long time, Himachal assembly passed The Himachal Pradesh Universities of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry (Amendment) Bill, 2024 on Sept 4, 2024, with almost the same contents as the Amendment Bill, 2023. This Bill was sent to the governor for assent on Oct 19, 2024, but the governor observed that the Amendment Bill, 2023, was reserved for consideration of the President on July 24, 2024, and it was not appropriate to take action on the Amendment Bill, 2024, until any decision was received by the central govt on the Amendment Bill, 2023. Later, the governor referred back the Amendment Bill, 2023 to the state govt with the observation that the state govt should carry out an amendment in the Bill as per Section 4.3(1) of the Model Act for Higher Agricultural Educational Institutions in India (Revised 2023). The section says that the VC "shall be appointed by the chancellor from the panel of eminent educationists in agricultural and allied sciences drawn by the search committee". But the council of ministers in its meeting on July 29 decided to withdraw the Amendment Bill, 2024, and to move a resolution for consideration of Vidhan Sabha "to again pass the Amendment Bill, 2023". Now, this Bill passed on Tuesday will again be sent to the governor for his assent. Article 200 of the Constitution 'Assent to Bills' reads: "…when a Bill is so returned, the House or Houses shall reconsider the Bill accordingly, and if the Bill is passed again by the House or Houses with or without amendment and presented to the governor for assent, the governor shall not withhold assent therefrom." Ruckus in House Himachal Vidhan Sabha proceedings on the second day of the 12-day monsoon session witnessed commotion as the opposition and treasury benches accused each other of defying all traditions of the House as well as the democratic norms. The accusations reached such a point that speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania was forced to adjourn the House for five minutes as the opposition legislators raised slogans to object to revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi's claims that leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur broke all democratic traditions when he was the chief minister. He said on the state govt's appeal, 12,000-15,000 people in Himachal had given up electricity subsidy to date. Power subsidy to only those people using commercial power meters or income tax payers has been stopped, he added. Responding to BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma, the CM said in future the state govt would also focus on giving 300 units of free electricity depending upon the challenges and capabilities of the govt. Rs 364 crore pending under Himcare Health and family welfare minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd) agreed to BJP MLA Randhir Sharma's statement that the Himachal govt was yet to clear Rs 364.20 crore to various health institutions under the Himcare health scheme, which provides cashless medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year to a family. He said the state govt had not stopped the Himcare scheme in the state and also there were 25 private health institutes where this scheme was in operation. BJP MLA Vinod Kumar claimed that patients were not being treated in many govt hospitals under the Himcare scheme and they were forced to mortgage their valuables for treatment. The CM intervened to say that the Congress govt spent Rs 550 crore under the scheme but claimed that they detected large-scale irregularities in the Himcare scheme during the previous BJP govt.

Minneapolis (Minnesota), Aug. 19: President Ford said to-day he will ask Congress for an additional $ two to three billions for nuclear weapons unless the Soviet Union helps shape a strategic arms agreement. Mr. Ford also warned that the Soviets could endanger detente by interfering in Portugal to support the communist-backed military Government there. He defended American warmth toward the Soviet Government but he also declared the U.S. must be Number 1 in military might in an address prepared for the American Legion National Convention here. 'I hope we are on a two-way street with the Soviet Union,' Mr. Ford said. But he said that potential adversaries are not reducing the levels of their military power and 'the United States must be alert and strong.' He said that the $92.8 billions including $9.8 billions for nuclear arms, in the Defence budget was the 'bare minimum required for our safety'. He pledged to his military-oriented audience he will 'vigorously resist' defence spending cuts. Maybe in the 1977 fiscal year spending on nuclear forces can be held down but the projection depends on 'real progress in SALT II (strategic arms limitations talks),' Mr. Ford said. If there can be no agreement, 'I will have no choice but to recommend to the Congress an additional $ two to three billions for strategic weapons programme in the current and coming fiscal years,' he said. Mr. Ford also said the U.S. was watching to see if the Soviet Union would honour individual rights and human freedoms that were implicit in the declaration at the recent European summit conference at Helsinki.

Will hold dharna if West Bengal's college admissions do not begin soon, warns BJP
Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari warned of sit-in demonstrations outside the State Education Department headquarters at Bikash Bhavan from next week if the State government does not initiate college admissions and publish pending exam results by the end of this week (August 24, 2025). On Monday (August 18, 2025), Mr. Adhikari headed a delegation of 15 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators to meet Governor CV Ananda Bose and submitted a memorandum seeking his urgent intervention in the prolonged delay in the publishing of results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). WBJEE, an entrance exam for undergraduate engineering, technology, architecture, and pharmacy courses in West Bengal's State-run and State-aided universities, was conducted on April 27, but the results have been delayed, likely because the matter surrounding the State's Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation list is currently being heard by the Supreme Court. 'It has been three months [since examinations have been concluded], yet first-year admissions have not yet begun. JEE results have not been declared. This is a very serious issue. Nearly 5 lakh candidates and their guardians are very worried. They are suffering… If college admissions do not start by this week and the JEE results are not published, BJP MLAs will hold dharnas in front of Bikash Bhavan from next week,' Mr. Adhikari said after meeting the Governor. In West Bengal, 8,200 educational institutions shut down last year, Mr. Adhikari said. He also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to privatise higher education in the State. 'The delay will lead to drop [in] student turnout as many may be forced to reluctantly seek opportunity outside Bengal. In addition to the worst hit future of lakhs of meritorious students, the reputation of the educational institution in West Bengal [gets] hit which will reduce the number of students as they will go outside in huge number,' the memorandum to the Governor dated August 18, 2025, reads. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government's Directorate of Medical Education, in an 'urgent notice' on August 18, announced that the counselling and admission process for medical and dental courses under National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 'has been kept under abeyance till further order.' 'The future of the state's medical students has been pushed into darkness. Why was the admission counseling, once started, suddenly halted indefinitely? Is this yet another attempt to appease narrow political interests by granting undue privilege to a particular group under the guise of reservation?' Union Minister and BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar questioned on Monday, referring to the order. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration near Bikash Bhavan to protest against the delay in WBJEE results and the deferment of MBBS and BDS counselling. Several protestors were detained as the police disrupted SFI's protest march to Bikash Bhavan.
