Nasi Berlauk Juedin offers ‘rahmah' price to help the less fortunate

Although their profit margin is small, Sabarudin Ramli is content knowing that he is able to help his customers, especially those with large families. 12 Jul 2025 01:00pm Trader Sabarudin Ramli, 42 (right), busy packing dishes priced at RM5 per serving during a visit to Warung Juedin, Kampung Tok Jiring. Driven by a desire to ease the burden of the less fortunate, Sabarudin Ramli, 42, and his wife, Ajuma' Arasikim Din, 41, are determined to sell 'nasi campur' (mixed rice) with various dishes at just RM5 per serving at their eatery, Nasi Berlauk Juedin. Members of the public seize the opportunity to buy dishes priced at RM5 per serving during a visit to Warung Juedin, Kampung Tok Jiring. - Bernama photo Sabarudin said that although their profit margin is small, he is content knowing that he is able to help his customers, especially those with large families. "I started this business in 2014 with a budget rice menu priced at RM2.50 from a small stall in Kuala Nerus before we moved to our current location six years ago. "The 'rahmah' concept was introduced just three weeks ago. Previously, our prices were like any regular eatery. But after many customers shared their struggles with the rising cost of living, my wife and I decided to make a change,' he said when met at his eatery in Kampung Tok Jiring here recently. Every day, the couple rises at 4am to prepare more than 30 dishes, assisted by four employees. Among the most popular menu items are ikan patin masak tempoyak, ayam berempah, udang masak lemak cili api, ikan tiga rasa and kerabu pegaga. For the past three weeks, their eatery has been frequented by customers from Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Marang. "Ever since my eatery went viral on TikTok, we've been getting a non-stop stream of customers. They arrive as early as 10 am to dine in, and many also pack various dishes to take home. "Alhamdulillah, all our customers are satisfied. Despite the low prices, we never compromise on quality. Many are surprised that seafood dishes like prawns in gravy are priced at just RM4 a plate,' said the father of three. Sabarudin said their business operates from 10 am to 5pm from Sunday to Thursday. "But these days, our food runs out quickly. By around 1.30pm, most dishes are already gone, so we have to close early. In the past three weeks, we've been serving about 300 customers a day and had to prepare larger batches of food to avoid disappointing customers,' he said, adding that iced tea and syrup drinks are also sold at just 50 sen per glass. A customer, Muhammad Asyraf Haniff Zaki, 35, from Manir, said he was pleasantly surprised to find a place still selling mixed rice at RM5 and hoped that other traders would emulate such an initiative. "Today, I came with my wife. We had two pieces of ayam percik, fried beef, patin tempoyak and ulam-ulaman. We also packed two pieces of chicken in gravy and prawns for our kids. "I paid only RM30. Usually, for this amount of food, it would be no less than RM50. Definitely worth it,' he said. - BERNAMA

MCMC identifies 10 subsidiary instruments to facilitate Online Safety Act implementation

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified 10 subsidiary instruments, including regulations and codes, to facilitate the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act 2025, says Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said the instruments were at various stages of development, with prioritisation guided by the need to ensure alignment with the act's objectives and scope. She said the development of the regulations is contingent upon completion of the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), followed by approval from the Attorney General's Chambers (A-GC). "MCMC anticipates completing the development of the subsidiary instruments between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, subject to the complexity and readiness of each item," she said at The Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) 30th Anniversary celebration here tonight. Also present were the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, MBOR chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio, MBOR chief executive officer Christopher Wong, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Head of TV, Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali. Meanwhile, during her speech, Teo said MBOR would be certifying a new national entry for a book on child sexual grooming by Mohamed Nazri Prem Nasir on Aug 2 at the Universiti Malaya. She said child sexual grooming was one of the core concerns addressed under the Online Safety Act 2025, a landmark legislation aimed at creating a safer digital space, especially for young and vulnerable users. She said the upcoming 13-episode television series, Malaysia Luar Biasa, produced in collaboration with Bernama, noting that the programme would spotlight 30 to 40 national records featuring extraordinary Malaysians. "Notably, the programme will debut during the National Day celebration week, making it even more special as we honour not just our nation's independence but also the spirit, resilience, and excellence of Malaysians who have made their mark. "It's a timely reminder that patriotism can be expressed through achievement and that greatness can come from every corner of our beloved country," she said. The programme will officially premiere on August 26, 2025, at 8.30pm on Bernama TV (Astro 502). Teo said the significant milestone would add to Bernama's inspiring achievements, which also included a record in MBOR for its participation in the "Longest Non-Stop Multi-language National Broadcast." She said Bernama TV, then known as Bernama News Channel (BNC), was one of the key platforms delivering the historic 25-hour non-stop national broadcast in four languages, held from Sept 16 to 17, 2019, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. Meanwhile, Teo also lauded the National Information Dissemination Centre's (Nadi) achievements at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards 2025 in Geneva earlier this week, through its Pulau Banggi Initiative and Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project. She said as of June 30, a total of 1,097 Nadi centres had been successfully established out of the 1,099 planned nationwide, while the remaining two centres in Sabah were in the final stages of implementation. "This near-complete rollout is a testament to the government's commitment to digital inclusivity and ensuring that no one is left behind," she said. – Bernama

China denies asking firms to collect data illegally after new EU probe

Published on: Friday, July 11, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 11, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: TikTok was fined €530 million in May by the Data Protection Commission over sending personal data to China. (AP pic) BEIJING: Beijing denied today asking firms to 'illegally' collect and store users' personal information, after an Irish regulator helping the EU regulate data privacy began investigating Chinese social media giant TikTok. 'The Chinese government attaches great importance to and protects data privacy and security in accordance with the law,' foreign ministry spokesman Mao Ning said. Beijing 'has never and will never require companies or individuals to illegally collect or store data', Mao said. 'We hope that the European side will respect the market economy and fair competition, and provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for companies from all countries,' she told a regular news conference. The social media giant has been in the crosshairs of Western governments for years over fears that personal data could be used by China for espionage or propaganda purposes. However, TikTok has insisted that it has never received any requests from Chinese authorities for European users' data. TikTok was fined €530 million in May by the Data Protection Commission over sending personal data to China, although the Chinese social media giant had insisted this data was only accessed remotely. TikTok, which has 1.5 billion users worldwide, is a division of Chinese tech giant ByteDance. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
