CM: businesses will no longer need police licence to run operations
Hotels, swimming pools, guest houses, video game parlours, auditoriums, and amusement parks in Delhi will no longer require licences from the police to be operational, said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday. However, municipal corporations and the departments concerned should now grant permission for their functioning.
On June 19, Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena had approved an order withdrawing the requirement of the Delhi police to issue licences for seven business sectors under the Delhi Police Act, 1978. Businesses will now be exempted from having to obtain a no-objection certificate from the police. The exemption encompasses entities such as hotels, motels, guest houses, restaurants (eating houses), swimming pools, auditoriums, video game parlours, discotheques, and amusement parks.
The licensing power will now be transferred to local bodies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, or Delhi Cantonment Board.
The move comes after hotel and guest house operators sought the repealing of licences during a meeting with Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry Brijesh Goyal and Industries Minister Manjinder Sirsa.
Ms. Gupta said the reform is a direct reflection of the government's 'visionary approach' and in line with the BJP-led Centre's 'minimum government, maximum governance' and Ease of Doing Business policies.
'This decision is not only a big step towards administrative reform but also the result of the policy and thinking of the Central government,' said the CM. 'The Centre is adopting ease of doing business for the benefit of the country, which is being implemented in Delhi,' she added.
Ms. Gupta said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has categorically said the police force should be relieved from non-core duties so that their energy and resources can be focused on law and order, security, and crime control. The subject of policing in the national capital lies under the Home Ministry.
'We want to make Delhi not only the political capital of India but also a model of good governance. That is the mission of our double-engine government,' the CM said.

Grievance redress gets boost with tech, community camps: CM Rekha Gupta
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday (June 22, 2025) said the Delhi Government is adopting hi-tech systems and increasing direct engagement with citizens to address public grievances more effectively. Asserting that resolving citizens' complaints was her administration's 'core commitment', Ms. Gupta said the Delhi government was implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'vision of transparent, time-bound governance'. 'To resolve issues efficiently, problems are being addressed in public hearing centers under the leadership of the District Magistrates (DMs) on weekends. A 24x7 Public Grievance Monitoring System (PGMS) is also operational,' the Chief Minister stated. Public outreach According to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), on her directions, jan sunwayi (public hearing) camps are now being held every weekend across all 11 revenue districts. These camps are chaired by DMs and attended by senior officials from various departments, including the Municipal Corporation and Delhi Police. 'To make the process more citizen-friendly, these hearings are being held in community spaces such as schools, local chaupals, and banquet halls rather than restricting them to government offices,' the CMO said. In these camps, officials attempt to resolve grievances on the spot. Unresolved matters are referred to the departments concerned for timely follow-up. The hearings also see the participation of local MLAs, municipal councillors, Resident Welfare Associations, and residents. 'Over 600 citizens attended the most recent weekend camps. Earlier, 1,260 people participated on May 17 and over 1,350 on May 24. These are more than grievance redressal events. They reflect a commitment towards listening and acting promptly,' said the CMO in a statement. Last month, the Chief Minister instructed the installation of 'complaint and suggestion' boxes at the offices of DMs, Sub-District Magistrates, and Sub-Registrars. The CMO will monitor the input received. She also asked officials to draft a plan for receiving complaints via WhatsApp, mobile apps, and toll-free numbers, especially after reports that the existing portal for filing service-related complaints had become unreliable. Last month, Ms. Gupta directed officials to attend District Development Committee (DDC) meetings, chaired by MLAs, and ensure their presence at the jan sunwayi camps. Chief Minister Gupta said she also makes it a point to meet citizens personally at her residence to address their issues directly. 'Public trust is our greatest strength. Our government is alert, compassionate, and committed to resolving every issue. We are enacting Prime Minister Modi's belief that governance should be about service, not control. We are fully committed to serving the people with accountability,' she said. Responding to the CM's remarks, the Aam Aadmi Party said in a statement, 'The people of Delhi are fed up. From skyrocketing school fees to jhuggi demolitions, power cuts, water shortages, and waterlogging, Delhiites are hitting the streets in protest.' The party claimed that the people of Delhi are fondly recalling the previous Arvind Kejriwal-led government's effective governance. 'In contrast, the BJP is running a clueless administration. What's the point of the BJP's jan sunwai drama when not a single problem is actually being solved on the ground?' it said.

Tripura government gives jobs to 18 next of kin of victims murdered in political violence
The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment. 'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference. 'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed. The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now. A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated. The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018. CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993. Nilambur byelection: Day of reckoning for UDF and LDF
Kozhikode: Counting of votes for the high-stakes Nilambur assembly bypoll will take place on Monday. The bypoll saw a keenly-contested race between UDF and LDF, with former Left-backed MLA and independent candidate PV Anvar adding complexity to the race. A UDF win would signal public discontent with the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF govt, while an LDF victory would strengthen the ruling front's push for a third term in power. The counting will begin at 8am on Monday at Marthoma Higher Secondary School in Chungathara. Officials will open the strongroom holding EVMs at 7.30am in the presence of candidates' agents. Counting will start with postal ballots at 8am, followed by EVM votes from 8.10am. There will be 14 tables for counting EVM votes, four for postal ballots and one for pre-counting electronically transmitted postal ballot system votes. Votes from 263 polling booths will be counted in 19 rounds, covering 14 booths per round. After all rounds, officials will count VVPAT slips from five randomly selected polling stations separately in the presence of Election Commission observers. The entire counting process will be monitored using CCTV surveillance. A three-tier security system—comprising central forces, state police and local police—will deploy 900 personnel on duty. Election Commission observers and the returning officer will oversee the process. Following EC guidelines, arrangements have been made for candidates and their agents to monitor counting. EVM counting will start with UDF-ruled Vazhikkadavu panchayat, followed by Moothedam panchayat. If there is no clear lead in these initial rounds, it will likely indicate the tone for the final result. Otherwise, suspense will build as later booths—including Amarambalam, where the LDF expects a strong lead—are counted at the end. After Vazhikkadavu and Moothedam, counting will proceed with other panchayats like Edakkara, Pothukallu, Chungathara, Nilambur, Karulayi and Amarambalam. UDF expects its candidate Aryadan Shoukath to win by over 10,000 votes, while CPM's internal booth-level data estimates a narrow victory of 1,600 votes for its candidate M Swaraj. Nilambur byelection recorded a voter turnout of 75.87%. Of the 2,32,057 registered voters, 1,76,070 cast their votes, including 1,74,667 through EVMs and 1,403 postal ballots.
