One of IndieWire's favorite films of 2019 was 'Long Day's Journey Into Night,' Chinese director Bi Gan's genre-bending epic that used 3D and more formally twisting conceits to tell a story of romantic longing and a tryst that leads to a disappearance. While between films, Bi, who is rumored to have his much-anticipated third feature 'Resurrection' premiere at Cannes this year, ended up mentoring a young budding director for their own woozily dreamy portrait, 'The Botanist.' Jing Yi's new film premieres at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival in the Generation Kplus section, and IndieWire shares an exclusive first look below.
Here's the synopsis, per the Berlinale's official website: 'In a village in a remote valley on the northern border of Xinjiang, China, a lonely Kazakh boy named Arsin nurses fading memories of his family. He finds solace in the company of plants. The arrival of Meiyu, a Han Chinese girl, is like the discovery of a plant he has never seen before, bringing him comfort and a strange sense of wonder. Together, they grow like two distinct species, rooted in a shared corner of the world, imagining the valley as an endless ocean. But one day, Arsin learns that Meiyu will be moving to Shanghai, which is 4,792 kilometres away – a distance he struggles to comprehend. She is headed to a city where the ocean actually exists. Arsin is left alone to grapple with the quiet shifts in their small, fragile world.'

'Sharing Yibin Globally' City Culture Event Kicks Off in Beijing, Enthralling Chinese & Int'l Guests with Yibin's Charm

On August 15th, the 'Sharing Yibin with the World' city cultural experience event kicked off in the core area of Beijing's central axis. International students from Russia, UK, France, Mexico, Spain and other countries, as well as Chinese and foreign media groups, gathered together and boarded the unique Yibin-style 'mobile viewing restaurant' bus, enjoying the dazzling night view of Beijing while tasting authentic Yibin cuisine and Yibin Wuliangye, and experiencing the unique charm of Yibin, the 'first city of the Yangtze River'. At the event, Chinese and foreign guests paused to tick off in front of the well decorated Yibin city scenery installation. Through graphic displays and explanations, they gained an in-depth understanding of Yibin's tourism culture, special cuisine and industrial development achievements. Inside the sightseeing bus, the aroma of authentic Yibin Wuliangye, Yibin Burning Noodles, Lizhuang White Pork, Junlian Peppercorn Chicken and other delicacies fills the air. While tasting the food, the guests interacted with the staff in both languages and enthusiastically learned the Yibin dialect. The scene was filled with laughter and joy. 'This is my first time tasting Wuliangye, it's so fragrant! Yibin Burning Noodles also has a very rich taste, I really like it!' An international student from France expressed his excitement. One of the Mexican student raved about Li Zhuang White Pork: 'The way to eat Li Zhuang White Pork is so interesting. The thin slices of meat paired with the special dipping sauce are amazing!' Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River, Minjiang River, and Jinsha River, Yibin is celebrated as the first city along the Yangtze River, China's Liquor Capital, China's Bamboo Capital, and China's Power Battery Capital. With a 2,200-year history of city establishment, 3,000-year history of tea cultivation, and 4,000-year history of liquor brewing, Yibin is now steadfastly pursuing its goal of becoming an international tourism city. It aims to build 'three regions and three centers,' accelerating the integration of its cultural and tourism industries with global standards. Guided by the principle of blending scenic landscapes with urban development, the city is establishing a framework for international tourism. This event is jointly hosted by Beijing Yibin Guesthouse and Wuliangye Beijing Marketing Zone. It seeks to let more international friends know and understand Yibin through the culinary experiences. A representative from the Beijing Yibin Guesthouse stated that the event will showcase Yibin's cuisine, culture, and city image on the world stage of Beijing Central Axis—a World Cultural Heritage. Future cultural, economic, trade, and tourism exchanges will deepen cooperation between Beijing and Yibin. Through diversified international promotions, Yibin aims to enhance its global influence, attract more global attention, and advance its development as an international tourism destination. It is reported that the event will last until August 17th, during which time there will be exhibitions of Yibin's characteristic products, cultural and tourism promotions, etc., to further demonstrate the vitality and style of Yibin city. China's Pop Mart sees profit soar 400% as Labubu dolls fly off shelves around the world

The Chinese maker of the monster hit Labubu dolls said Tuesday its profit soared nearly 400% in the first half of the year as the toothy-grinned plush toy took the world by storm. Beijing-based Pop Mart posted net profit of $636 million, a 396.5% spike compared to the same period in 2024 – and handily beating estimates of a 350% rise over the entire year. Revenue skyrocketed 204.4% to roughly $1.93 billion, far stronger than the 62% growth seen in the same period last year. 3 Pop Mart said its net profit jumped nearly 400% on sales of its popular Labubu dolls. Gabriella Bass Shares in Pop Mart have popped more than 200% so far this year, making the Beijing-based toymaker more valuable than Barbie-maker Mattel and Hello Kitty owner Sanrio. Explosive demand for its Labubu dolls in overseas markets has driven the growth, since the toys sell for higher prices and generate bigger margins in regions like North America. The company sells its Labubu dolls – which have big eyes, sharp-toothed grins and tall ears like a bunny – in 'blind boxes,' so shoppers don't know the exact color they're getting until they open the package. That has turned certain rare Labubu designs into pricey collectibles – going for hundreds of dollars on eBay, with one first-generation figurine recently selling for $150,000 at an auction in Beijing. Celebrities like K-pop singer Lisa, Rihanna and David Beckham have helped fuel the Labubu fever, wearing the tiny monster dolls as keychains on luxury handbags or car keys. Pop Mart said Tuesday it would boost its supply of the dolls, which have been sold out in stores around the world. 3 Labubu sales are expected to pass 10 million units a day by September, according to Pop Mart CEO Wang Ning. Getty Images CEO Wang Ning told Chinese state media last month that sales of Labubu are expected to pass 10 million units a day by September. He added that overseas growth has been much faster than expected, with foreign sales likely to exceed the domestic Chinese market this year. Labubu dolls are included in Pop Mart's 'The Monsters' intellectual property characters. The company said Tuesday that 'The Monsters' accounted for 34.7% of total revenue. 3 Pop Mart has 571 retail stores and 2,597 robot shops across 18 countries and regions. It is rapidly expanding, with plans to open a total of 100 new outlets outside the mainland this year. Earlier this month, Pop Mart opened a megastore in Iconsiam, a massive Bangkok shopping center.

Fake Labubu dolls prompt 'urgent' warning from CPSC: 'Dangerous, illegal'

The fakes are "small enough for a child to fit the doll in their mouth" and "break apart easily." The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an 'urgent' warning Monday about knockoff Labubu dolls posing a 'serious risk of choking and death to young children.' The warning only applies to fake versions of the Labubu dolls — sometimes referred to as 'Lafufu dolls' — which are sold as plush figures and plush keychains. The CPSC said it has received multiple reports that the fake Labubus are 'small enough for a child to fit the doll in their mouth and block their airway' and 'break apart easily, releasing small pieces that can become choking hazards.' 'These fake Labubu dolls are dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes,' Peter Feldman, the acting chairman of the CPSC, said. 'No parent should have to wonder if a toy will stop their child from breathing. Protect your children and buy only from reputable sellers.' The CPSC said its investigators have identified several U.S. shipments from China containing the fake Labubu dolls. 'Federal law prohibits the importation and sale of consumer products that fail to meet CPSC safety standards,' the CPSC said in its warning. 'CPSC will continue aggressive enforcement at U.S. ports to block dangerous imports before they reach American families.' The original Labubu doll is a 'blind box' collectible toy manufactured by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company. The dolls started to grow in popularity in 2024, with many fans crediting Blackpink star Lisa with helping to start the craze. Pop Mart's revenue has exploded thanks to the global interest in Labubus. Its product line has grown to over 300 variants of the toy, but it's the secrecy over what's actually in the blind box and how quickly Pop Mart sells out when it does its restocks that have contributed to growing reseller markets, CNN reported. While the average retail price of a Labubu is $32, some resale prices have reached up to $7,000. How to spot fake Labubu dolls The CPSC urges consumers to take note of what could be a potentially dangerous, fake Labubu doll by keeping the following guidelines in mind: Unusually deep discounts could indicate it's a fake product. Authentic Pop Mart Labubu dolls have a holographic Pop Mart sticker, a scannable QR code that leads to the official Pop Mart site and a UV stamp on one of the doll's feet. Authentic Pop Mart Labubu dolls have nine teeth. The product should only be bought from trusted, legitimate stores or websites. Check the toy before giving it to your child. Especially if it's a small keychain, make sure nothing easily falls off and check for other choking hazards. If you experience any injury or dangerous product defect, report it to the CPSC here.
