Family of Race Across The World's Sam Gardiner ‘overwhelmed' by support
The 24-year-old, who competed in the BBC One series alongside his mother Jo, died following a car crash last month.
A JustGiving page launched in his memory by his family, in aid of National FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), has so far raised more than £10,000.
His mother said: 'We have been overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of messages of love and support on social media and in comments to press reporting.
'We would like to thank the BBC, Studio Lambert and everyone at Race Across The World production, fellow contestants and fans of the show for all their support at this terrible time. It has been very comforting to know that Sam touched so many people.

'I have been particularly moved by all the messages that Sam was an inspiration to many who have been impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
'We adopted Sam and he was diagnosed with FASD. As viewers of season two will recall, this was a big challenge both for Sam and for us as his parents.
'National FASD helped us on that journey. If some good comes of this tragedy, it will be that FASD is better understood.'
Mr Gardiner was driving a white Volkswagen Golf R estate when it came off the road and rolled before landing on its side.
The accident happened on the A34 in Gatley, near Cheadle, on Monday May 26 and he died on May 29 from his injuries, his family said last week.
Broadcast in March 2020, Sam and Jo ventured across Mexico and Argentina as part of the second series of the BBC show.
Mr Gardiner's father Andrew said: 'When the news broke last week, friends asked how they could help.

'After some thought, I decided to set up a JustGiving page to raise money for National FASD in memory of Sam. The page is called Sam Gardiner; Super Human.
'I set the target at £500 thinking a few friends might be generous enough to make a donation. So far it's raised 20 times that. It's very humbling to see the RATW family rally to this worthy cause.'
The National Organisation for FASD says on its official website that it 'provides support to people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, their families and communities, campaigns to raise public awareness, and promotes relevant policies and practices'.
The website also describes FASD as resulting 'when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body..
It says: 'FASD is a spectrum. Each person with FASD is affected differently.
'While more than 400 conditions can co-occur, FASD is at its core a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. All people with FASD have many strengths. Early diagnosis and appropriate support are essential, especially for executive functioning.'
A message on the official National FASD Instagram account said: 'Sam lived his life full of love, exuberance and adventure as seen on BBC's Race Across the World.
'National FASD is both humbled and honoured to help carry on his legacy via donations coming from hundreds.'

Celebrity pal Rylan, 36, has paid tribute to Tulisa's journey, writing how 'it's time to know the truth' about his friend and fellow X-Factor star. Taking to Instagram, Rylan shared an image of himself with Tulisa, writing in the caption: 'Never been prouder @tulisacontostavlos.' He continued: 'From 2012 to now we've been through a lot and I'm so proud we stayed by each others side. Now it's time for everyone to know your truth. 'We've never publicised it, we've just been there for each other. I'm so happy your words will now be heard by everyone. Tulisa's book Judgement is out now x #Day1.' However, her career took a devastating turn when ex-boyfriend Justin Edwards allegedly released a seven-minute sex tape of her online. In the book, Tulisa has opened up about what she describes as her 'year from hell.' 'When the sex tape had come out, I had slept on the bathroom floor for five days,' Tulisa wrote. The Only Way is Essex is celebrating 15 years on our TV screens this year so we took a look at where the OG cast are now since leaving the show The Only Way is Essex is set to celebrate its 15th anniversary this year, and it's marking the occasion with a bang. The ITV2 reality show will kick off the new series with a cast trip to Portugal. Fans won't have to wait much longer for the return of the show, as it airs on Sunday 17 August on ITV2 and ITVX. Despite some fresh faces joining the mix, viewers are still captivated by the original cast members who brought drama, fights and romances that the British public couldn't resist. It's been 15 years since we first met characters like James Argent and Amy Childs, but what are the original TOWIE cast up to now? Mark Wright From the moment he burst onto our screens, Mark Wright was the ultimate heartthrob. In the first series, Mark was dating his childhood sweetheart Lauren Goodger, and was often seen with his best mate James Argent. Since then, Mark has become one of TOWIE's most successful alumni. He's now married to the incredibly talented Michelle Keegan, and they welcomed their first child together in 2015, ten years after tying the knot. Now 38, Mark works as a DJ on Heart radio and runs his own health and fitness company, Live Wright. He also renovated his marital home with Michelle, sharing stunning photos of the transformation on Instagram. James 'Arg' Argent (series 1-19 and 21-23) Arg became a household name after appearing on the reality show in 2010 with then-girlfriend Lydia Bright. Lydia Bright (Series 1-9 and 11-20) Lydia catapulted to fame as part of the original cast of The Only Way is Essex in 2010. She became renowned for her turbulent relationship with fellow cast member James 'Arg' Argent. Lydia and Arg's relationship history extends even beyond TOWIE as they have been in an on-and-off relationship since their teenage years. However, after his infidelity and drug use, Lydia decided to end things. In August 2019, Lydia announced that she was expecting a baby. Loretta, born in March 2020, is Lydia's first child with her ex-partner Lee Cronin. In 2024, Lydia introduced her new boyfriend Ben Davies to the public, but confirmed she was single again by the end of the year. Chloe Sims (Series 1-23) Chloe Sims, one of the longest-serving cast members of The Only Way Is Essex, left the show in 2022 along with her sisters Frankie and Demi Sims following off-camera 'disagreements'. The rumours were confirmed when Chloe announced in July 2022 that she and her sisters would be leaving TOWIE to start their own show on OnlyFans TV, titled House Of Sims. Her brother, former TOWIE star Charlie Sims, and his fiancée Georgia Shults are also part of the new venture. Lauren Goodger (Series 1-6 and 16-19) Lauren was a TOWIE OG and during the first season she was in a relationship with Mark Wright before they split in 2012 after dating for 10 years. She was on the show on and off for a few seasons before returning properly in 2024. She welcomed her daughter Larose into the world in 2021 with then-boyfriend Charles Drury. Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Michelle Tsiakkas has defended her former dance partner Jamie Borthwick after he faced a backlash and was suspended by the BBC Strictly Come Dancing pro Michelle Tsiakkas has spoken out in defence of shamed former dance partner Jamie Borthwick. EastEnders star Jamie faced controversy following his stint on the hit dance competition as he was suspended by the BBC after making an ableist slur. Michelle, 29, finished seventh on Strictly with Jamie last year, and has now confirmed that they have remained 'really close' after working together on the show. Michelle has confirmed that the pair are still in regular contact - and even went as far as to refer to Jamie, 31, as being like a "brother" to her. She said, 'Whatever you saw on screen of our relationships together is what our relationship is like. We're like brother and sister, we're really close. He still actually messages me saying that he misses it." Speaking to The Sun on Sunday she appeared to confirm the pair have even met up as she continued, 'I saw him the other day, he remembered all of his routines, he was doing them again. I was actually so surprised.' Speaking at the National Reality TV Awards, Michelle added, 'For me, that counts more than any trophy because I feel like I had a positive impact on your life and changed it for the better - in terms of him finding this new found love for dancing. He's honestly so passionate about dancing. I can't believe it. He is trying to dance with everybody and do his routines with everyone.' When quizzed about whether she and Jamie speak via a Strictly WhatsApp group, she confirmed that most of their chats are private saying, 'We mostly talk just me and him so that is really nice that we still have a good relationship.' Michelle then opened up about the pressure of starring on the high-profile BBC series and how "special" it is to be involved. She said, 'The show is about joy and dancing. It always needs to come back to that because it is such a special show. 'It's about having fun and not taking anything too personal and creating memories that last a lifetime, which they truly do.' Jamie famously faced a backlash and was suspended by the BBC in June after 19 years playing Albert Square fan favourite character Jay Brown on EastEnders when he was accused of using a slur targeted at disabled people while on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. A video obtained by The Sun saw Jamie captured describing the residents of Blackpool, where the show was filming at the time, as "m********s." Co-star Wynne Evans was reportedly backstage with Borthwick at rehearsals and heard saying "Oh my God" when he made the comment. Borthwick has since apologised for using the term and admitted that he had not fully understood the derogatory nature of what he said and is now "deeply embarrassed." The soap actor said in a statement, which read: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. 'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. He has since reportedly been reinstated by BBC bosses after three months away from the iconic soap.
