Siddaramaiah dares BJP, JD(S) for debate on development works in Karnataka

The Hindu2 days ago
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday dared the Opposition BJP and JD(S) for a debate on the development works in the State.
Speaking at the 'Sadhana Samavesha' here on Saturday, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the leaders of BJP and JD(S) should have attended the programme to keep themselves abreast about the development works taken up by his government.
The event was organised by the Mysuru district administration to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development works worth ₹2,578 crore for Mysuru district.
The leaders of the two parties, who were misleading the people of the State with a series of lies, should come to one platform for a debate on the development works of the government. 'I too will come,' the Chief Minister said.
He said the Opposition leaders were spreading false propaganda that no development work had been taken up in the State, as the government's treasury had been exhausted due to implementation of guarantee schemes. 'If that was so, how could the government take up works amounting to ₹2,578 crore in Mysuru?', he questioned.
He alleged that they were 'envious' of his government's development works.
Betrayal
Mr. Siddaramaiah accused the BJP and JD(S) of betraying the State by remaining silent on the injustice meted out to Karnataka by the Centre on devolution of taxes.
Even though Karnataka contributes ₹4.5 lakh crore in terms of taxes to the Centre, the State receives only ₹65,000 crore. 'For every ₹100 we contribute, we are given back only ₹15,' he said, while regretting the failure of the Lok Sabha members of the BJP and JD(S) from the State to raise the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
None of the Lok Sabha members elected from Karnataka, including Union Ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi, and MP for Haveri Basavaraj Bommai, had the courage to ask Mr. Modi to correct injustice being meted out to Karnataka.
Guarantee programmes
Listing out the guarantee programmes of the Congress government in the State, which, he claimed, had helped increase the purchasing power of people, Mr. Siddaramaiah said BJP was copying the 'Karnataka model' of guarantee schemes in other States.
Though Mr. Modi had opposed the guarantee schemes when the Congress first announced them in Karnataka by claiming that the State will go 'bankrupt' if they were implemented, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the BJP had now begun copying them (guarantee schemes) in various States, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
Further, he said the NDA government in Bihar, in which the BJP was a coalition partner, had now announced 125 units of free power, while Karnataka was providing 200 units of free power.
'Aren't you ashamed Mr. Modi', asked Mr. Siddaramaiah while claiming that the BJP was copying the Karnataka model of guarantee schemes in other States.
While contending that the BJP works only for '10%' of the country's population, the Chief Minister claimed that the Congress was committed to bringing the poor, farmers, Dalits, and minorities to the mainstream by implementing programmes for social justice like Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE), Food Security Act, and NREGA, etc. during the tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Jul 22, 2025 08:10 (IST) 16-Hour Debate On Operation Sindoor In Parliament Next Week A 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor has been scheduled for next week in parliament. But the matter had to be deferred to next week in view of a scheduled foreign visit of the Prime Minister. Operation Sindoor - the Indian retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam -- was among the eight topics the Opposition had sought discussion on during the monsoon session of parliament. The topics were decided on during a marathon virtual meeting of 24 Opposition parties last week. The government's assent to the Operation Sindoor debate came since, sources have said. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately," his letter read. His abrupt move followed an eventful day in the Rajya Sabha - the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament - under his chairmanship. An opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma over burnt wads of cash found at his residence was submitted to him, and he mentioned it in the House and asked the secretary general to take further necessary steps. "Script was written earlier": Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat on Jagdeep Dhankar's "unexpected" resignation

Congress leaders are raising questions about Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation. Sukhdeo Bhagat suggests it might have been preplanned. He points to the absence of JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju from a key meeting. Other leaders like Jairam Ramesh also express doubts. They cite the ministers' absence as suspicious. Dhankar resigned citing health reasons. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat on Tuesday suggested that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation might have been preplanned, citing the "disappearance" of Union Minister JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju from the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held earlier on praying for Dhankar's good health, the Congress MP also mentioned that the Vice President's resignation was "sudden" and "unexpected," saying that if Dhankar stepped down due to health reasons, then he could have done it before the commencement of the Parliament monsoon session "We pray to God for his good health and long life. Everything appears normal in politics, but this is not the case. If it was on health grounds, I think he could have done it even before the session. Yesterday he suddenly resigned, it was unexpected. The BJP has forgotten their government traditions. Union Minister JP Nadda said whatever I say will go on record, so will you dictate to the Vice President? Secondly, there was a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee yesterday," Bhagat told about the absence of Nadda and Rijiju from the BAC meeting, the Congress leader added, "The Parliamentary Affairs Minister disappears. JP Nadda disappears. That's why I said the script was written earlier, and that was seen yesterday (July 21)."Meanwhile, Communist Party of India leader Sandosh Kumar also said that only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can explain the unexpected resignation of Dhankar. Kumar said that Dhankar seemed really enthusiastic in running the House, and was going to be part of several meetings too."I don't think it is because of his ill health, and only the BJP can explain on what happened last night. The Chairman was very enthusiastic in running the House, there were a number of meeting announced, BAC, all party meeting then quite unexpectedly this happened. We don't know much about this, like all NDA regime decisions, like notebandi, GST were announced midnight only. So this only BJP can explain as he is the creation of BJP that way," he told leader Jairam Ramesh, too, on Tuesday questioned the resignation of Dhankar, saying that there are "far deeper reasons" behind the resignation, citing the "deliberate" absence of Nadda and Rijiju from the BAC meeting."At 4:30 PM, the BAC reassembled under the chairmanship of Shri Jagdeep Dhankar. It waited for Shri Nadda and Shri Rijiju to arrive. They never came. Shri Jagdeep Dhankar was not personally informed that the two senior Ministers were not attending. Rightly, he took umbrage and rescheduled the BAC for today (July 22) at 1 PM," the Congress leader said in the Monday evening, Dhankhar resigned from his post "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice." Dhankhar, who is also Chairman of Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu."To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution," the letter read."I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency - the Hon'ble President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure," the letter Vice President also expressed his deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers.

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: 'Statutory process set in motion,' says RS Chairman Dhankhar on impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma

The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on Monday, with the government expressing willingness to discuss issues of 'national importance' — including Operation Sindoor and US President Donald Trump's claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. At a pre-session meeting with floor leaders, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was 'open to discussion within rules and conventions.' However, there was no assurance on debating Bihar's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, which the Opposition fears could disenfranchise marginalised communities. Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari pressed for debates on the Pahalgam terror attack, electoral reforms, and Trump's ceasefire claim. Tiwari also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign tour during the session, accusing him of ignoring his responsibilities at home. The government, meanwhile, is pushing ahead with its legislative agenda. Several key bills are lined up, including the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill, the National Sports Governance Bill, and amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act. Reforms in taxation, anti-doping rules, and the shipping and mining sectors are also on the table. The session, scheduled to continue until 21 August, is likely to see fierce exchanges between the government and the Opposition over national security, governance, and India's foreign policy stance. 10:29 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Opposition protests against SIR of voter list in Bihar Opposition leaders protest outside the Bihar Vidhan Sabha against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar ahead of the state Assembly Elections 2025. 10:27 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Monsoon Session Live: MPs start reaching Parliament amid heavy rain in Delhi — PTI_News (@PTI_News) 10:12 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Mosoon Session Live: Congress MP moves adjournment motion notice to discuss Balasore incident in Lok Sabha On Tuesday morning, Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka submitted an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha regarding a Balasore student's tragic self-immolation, which occurred due to reported "mental harassment and failure of the institutional mechanisms to respond to her repeated complaints." The notice, bearing Ulaka's signature, stated: "Allegedly the student had been facing persistent harassment and intimidation at the hands of certain faculty members and peers, and despite her written and verbal appeals to the authorities concerned, no timely or meaningful action was taken to address her grievances, pushing her to take the extreme step." The Koraput Lok Sabha constituency representative highlighted how this incident has reverberated throughout the nation, revealing institutional indifference, insufficient accountability and inadequate grievance resolution systems in educational establishments. The Congress MP characterised the Odisha student's death by self-immolation as a "serious failure of governance" and emphasised the necessity for the lower house to address this matter promptly to establish concrete preventive measures against similar incidents. 10:12 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Monsoon Live: Opposition forced to file no confidence motion against chair, says Priyanka Chaturvedi "Mr. Dhankar took both the Government and the Opposition to task in equal measure. Fact check: Incorrect. Reminder: Opposition was forced to file a no confidence motion against the chair because of the partisan manner of conduct. Let's at least not forget that, just because, the moment has come as a surprise," Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said in a post on X. 10:11 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Monsoon Live: Manickam Tagore submits adjournment motion to discuss SIR Congress MP Manickam Tagore Submitted an Adjournment Motion to Discuss the Urgent Matter of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls in Bihar and Its Threat to Democratic Rights. 10:11 (IST) Jul 22 Parliament Monsoon Live: Akhilesh Prasad Singh gives Suspension of Business Notice, demands to discuss SIR exercise in Bihar Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh has given Suspension of Business Notice under rule 267 and demand to discuss the concerns arising out of the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of elections, followed by a plan to conduct similar exercises nation-wide, including in West Bengal, where high levels of migration, displacement, and documentation-related vulnerabilities persist. Key among them are the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, the Bihar SIR drive, and the Air India 171 crash. PM Modi earlier briefed media and said the Monsoon Session is an occasion for celebration as a 'Vijayotsav.'The Prime Minister also appreciated the role of all parties in reaching out to the world community and exposing Pakistan as a haven for terror sponsors. The first sitting of the Lok Sabha in the Monsoon Session was adjourned just 20 minutes after it began, amid slogans by opposition MPs demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to US President Donald Trump's claims of brokering a peace deal between India and Pakistan. The session follows India's precision strike, Operation Sindoor, launched after the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. Opposition MPs are expected to question the government's response and seek justice for the victims.
