Factory owner held in Mum for teen's torture
Kolkata: Shahenshah, the owner of a jeans manufacturing unit in Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas was arrested from Mumbai by a team of Bengal Police on Thursday for the alleged torture of a teenaged boy, who worked at his factory.

The arrest was made amid the outrage over a widely circulated video, showing the 14-year-old boy, Samsad Ali, being hanged upside down, his hands tied with electric cables, thrashed and administered electric shock.
Samsad, who came from Chogoria village in Islampur in North Dinajpur, had been working at the factory for one-and-a-half months. Samsad was being turtured allegedly for stealing a mobile. But his father had said that ahead of Eid, Samdas had asked the factory owner for his wages, which were due, and that had led to this torture.
Shahenshah had been on the run ever since the video went viral, police said. Earlier, three other persons involved in the incident were arrested.
The boy's family claimed he was falsely accused of stealing the cellphone. "He was tortured without any reason. We have lodged a police complaint," a family member told reporters. pti

Exploring old law allowing ‘push back': Sarma
The Assam government is looking into the details of 'an old law' that will allow it to 'push back' infiltrators without having to mandatorily approach foreigners tribunals, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Nalbari, Sarma said that a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, while hearing a case on Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, had said that there is no legal requirement for the Assam government to always approach the judiciary in order to identify foreigners. 'There exists an immigrants expel order, which is an old law. The Supreme Court has said that this law is in force and a deputy commissioner can give permission for immediate pushback under it,' he maintained. 'For whatever reason, our lawyers had not informed us and we too didn't know about it. The entire matter has come to light in the last few days. We will now discuss it further,' he added. The chief minister said pushing back illegal migrants will continue, adding that the process of identifying foreigners, which had been paused due to NRC-related matters, will now be accelerated. 'And when the identification of a foreigner happens, there will be no need to send the case to any tribunal. We will directly push them back. We have been preparing for it,' he added. Sarma said the process of pushback will continue, though no person with a case pending before the court will be sent back. His comments came even as the state witnessed protests over 'harassment' of minorities in the name of detecting illegal immigrants. Members and supporters of the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) wore black badges and displayed placards against the purported recent pushback of Bangladeshis in the state. They carried out the protest in different parts, including Chirang and Jogighopa, after Eid namaz.

Man kills teen on Eid to ‘avenge son'
Roorkee: Eid celebrations turned into mourning for a family in Manglaur area near Roorkee after their 17-year-old son was brutally murdered by their 40-year-old neighbour on Saturday morning. The accused, a daily wager from Pathanpura locality, slit the boy's throat when the victim was returning home after offering prayers "to settle a personal score", police said on Saturday. Officials said that Riyasat Ahmed's son and the victim, Sahil Ahmed Malik, were friends and both studied in Class 9. On last year's Eid, they went to bathe in the Gangnahar canal when the accused's son was swept away by strong current. His body was recovered three days later from a nearby barrage. Since then, Riyasat believed that Sahil had intentionally pushed his son into the canal, causing his death. "The accused told us he deliberately chose the festive day to carry out the crime as his own son was killed by Sahil on the same day last year. We are probing the case from every possible angle," said SP (Rural) SC Suyal.
