CM announces free power, ₹25,000 annual aid for A.P. weavers
VIJAYAWADA Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the supply of up to 200 units of power per month free of cost to handlooms and 500 units per month to powerlooms from this month, which entail a burden of ₹190 crore to the government, an annual financial assistance of ₹25,000 per handloom weaver family under the 'Netanna Bharosa' scheme, and reimbursement of up to 5% of the Goods & Services Tax (GST) on handloom products. Also, he stated that the government would set up a Handloom Museum in Amaravati to showcase the richness of the handloom products from Andhra Pradesh that won global acclaim. Participating in a National Handloom Day event here on Thursday, Mr. Naidu said the government aimed at doubling the incomes of handloom weavers by implementing various schemes and that the free power scheme would benefit 93,000 handloom weaver families and 50,000 powerloom weaver families. He noted that the TDP was the first to provide social security pensions to weavers at age 50 and it was benefiting 92,724 families. The government was incurring an expenditure of ₹546 crore every year on account of the hike in pensions being given to weavers, to ₹4,000. A host of measures were taken to improve the living standards of handloom weavers in spite of financial constraints, as welfare was on top of the government's agenda, he said. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the handloom sector was in dire straits during the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) regime as the procurement from APCO almost came to a halt, and subsidies on yarn and dye were stopped. Many other steps taken by the YSRCP government made the lives of weavers miserable. The coalition government is restoring the thrift fund of ₹5 crore. Emphasis has been laid on increasing the market access to weavers through the One District One Product scheme. Handloom clusters Five new handloom clusters were in the process of being established under the National Rural Livelihood Mission in Mangalagiri, Venkatagiri, Uppada, Srikalahasti, and Rajam at a cost of ₹74 crore. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the handloom sector was the second largest after agriculture providing livelihood to around 1,22,644 families, and that the TDP had never neglected the weavers even when it was in the opposition. The handloom products made in Mangalagiri, Dharmavaram, Venkatagiri, Uppada, Pedana, Chirala, Ponduru, Madanapalli, Kodumuru, Nandavaram and Yemmiganur made a lasting impression on the buyers, Mr. Naidu said, expressing the government's commitment to doing whatever was required to revive the sector, and announcing that the birth anniversary of former MP Pragada Kotaiah, who spearheaded the handloom movement, would henceforth be celebrated as a State function. Earlier, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu visited the stalls set up by the Department of Handlooms & Textiles, and the Weavershala set up by the Titan company to help modernise weaving techniques and preserving the art (of hand weaving) for future generations. Ministers Nara Lokesh and S. Savitha, Advisor (Handlooms and Handicrafts) Suchitra Ella and Special Chief Secretary R.P. Sisodia were among those present.

10,000 cops, anti-drone system: Delhi police gear up for Independence Day
With Independence Day approaching, robust security measures have been rolled out across the national capital. Delhi Police said on Thursday that over 10,000 personnel, including paramilitary forces and special commandos, have been deployed to ensure law and order. Security preparations also include intensified foot and night patrolling, plainclothes teams in sensitive areas, and multiple drills. A senior official told news agency PTI that multilayered security will be in place at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation. In addition to on-ground personnel, advanced surveillance tools - including CCTV cameras, drone detection systems, and facial recognition technology - will be used to monitor the venue and surrounding areas. Snipers and rooftop teams will be positioned on high-rises near the Red Fort, while access to restricted zones will be tightly controlled. Security preparations also include intensified foot and night patrolling, plainclothes teams in sensitive areas, and multiple drills. Cyber units are monitoring social media platforms to detect and neutralise any potential online threats or misinformation campaigns. Coordination with central intelligence agencies has been strengthened, and anti-sabotage checks, vehicle barricading, and identity verifications are underway across the city. Special teams are on round-the-clock duty at airports, metro stations, railway stations, and inter-state bus terminals. In his first major directive since taking charge, Commissioner Singh has banned the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms - including drones, paragliders, and hot air balloons - over Delhi between August 2 and 16. The order notes that such platforms could be exploited by anti-social elements or terror groups to conduct airborne attacks or para-jumping stunts. Foot patrols have been stepped up in public areas such as markets, bus terminals, and metro stations, with senior officers instructed to personally oversee preparations on the ground. Surprise inspections and flag marches are planned across districts to boost public confidence and deter miscreants. Officials said Delhi Police are working in close coordination with central agencies to ensure foolproof security during the celebrations.
