Race Across The World star Sam's cause of death as devastated parents speak out

Daily Mirrora day ago

Race Across The World star Sam Gardiner's cause of death has been revealed. The 24-year-old, who competed in the BBC One series alongside his mother Jo, died in a horror car crash last month.
An inquest heard the former candidate of the BBC One show died of a 'devastating brain injury' after the horror collision on the A34 in Stockport. He lost control of the car after it hit a kerb on a central reservation on 26 May.
The vehicle was rolling and ended up on its side, as confirmed by Greater Manchester Police. He sadly died on 29 May from his injuries.
In a poignant statement previously released by his bereft parents Jo and Andrew, they conveyed their overwhelming grief, expressing that they were "devastated" over the loss of their "special" son.
Their heartfelt words described how: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved son Sam in a terrible accident. Sam left us far too soon, and while words will never fully capture the light, joy and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special."
It continued: "He was willing to go wherever the trail might lead and he touched everyone he met on the road. He found great happiness working as a landscape gardener on the west coast of Scotland.
"Sam brought warmth, laughter and a smattering of chaos wherever he went. He leaves behind a huge hole in our hearts. We will miss him endlessly, but we'll also remember him with smiles, tall tales, and a depth of love that will never fade".
Sam succumbed to his injuries a few days after the crash, as a spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Police reported: "We sadly must confirm that the driver of a white VW Golf R estate involved in a single vehicle collision on Monday 26 May on the A34 in Gatley has since passed away from his injuries.
"The driver, a 24 year old man, has been identified as Sam Gardiner. His family have been notified and are receiving support from specially trained officers. They have requested privacy during this dreadful time. We'd like to express our gratitude to everyone who shared our appeal and sent their best wishes to Sam and his family."
A spokesperson for Race Across the World said: "Everyone who worked with him and indeed everyone who watched Sam could see just how valuable and transformative the journey was for both him and his mum, Jo.
"Sam embraced the seven-week trip with an energy, love and a determination that saw the pair enjoy adventures across Mexico to Argentina making audiences fall in love with them and their special bond as a result.
"Since filming, both Sam and Jo have been an integral part of the Race Across the World cast family and on behalf of us all from the BBC, production and the rest of the cast, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to his parents, Andrew and Jo; his brothers."

Huge EastEnders twist as another major couple get engaged

This article contains spoilers for tomorrow's episode of EastEnders, which airs Friday at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Wedding bells are set to ring out across Albert Square once again, as a beloved couple decided to tie the knot. I am, of course, referring to Patrick and Yolande Trueman (Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter), who recently won the British Soap Award for Best On-Screen Partnership. What a way to cap off the celebrations! Throughout this week's episodes of the soap, we've seen the couple struggle with intimacy in the wake of a horrific incident. Some of the serial's most harrowing scenes ever aired last year, when church-leader Pastor Clayton (Howard Saddler) sexually assaulted Yolande in a store room at the community centre. She bravely spoke up about her ordeal to friend Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe), and then found the courage to report his crime to the police. Unfortunately, due to a lack of evidence, there was little that they could do. However, soon after, a second survivor of his abuse came forward, with the CPS charging him with two counts of sexual assault. Their bravery was noted by a third woman, who also came forward, prompting Clayton to barge his way into Yolande's house in an attempt to get her to drop the charges. Later that night, the police arrived and she assumed he'd spread more vicious lies about her. They were actually there to reveal that Clayton had taken his own life. Since then, Yolande has tried to rebuild her life and reconnect with her Christian faith – something which she abandoned following the sexual assault. Earlier this week, Yolande went to run herself a bath and asked her life partner to give her a massage afterwards. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Vicki takes action to keep EastEnders abuser Joel out of jail after assault

Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) makes it her mission to protect Joel Marshall (Max Murray) after his commits another sex offence in EastEnders next week. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, Joel is deeply troubled, and is the reason his family were forced to flee from Australia. After upskirting a school mate, his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) coughed up a whopping $50,000 to keep the girl's silence, but her family also demanded that they leave the country. Since settling in Walford, it seems that his behaviour hasn't changed. Not only has he introduced naïve Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to pornography, but he also decided to record sexual content of his own. Growing closer to Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), he secretly filmed them having sex – a video which a horrified Ross later discovered on his son's phone. In upcoming scenes, his behaviour worsens, despite demands from both Ross and Vicki for him to change his ways. Having spent the day with Tommy, the lads board an underground train and Joel decides to entwine him further into a web of misbehaviour. He pulls out his phone, and instructs Tommy to start recording. Stumbling through the carriage, he pretends to fall on a fellow passenger named Isla, who he goes onto touch inappropriately. Tommy is stunned by what he sees, as a terrified Isla rushes to report him to the police that are present in the tube station. Joel is apprehended and hauled in for questioning – just as Ross and Vicki witness what is happening. Down at the cop shop, Ross demands answers from the teen, as Vicki corners Isla and tries to comfort her. Vicki is supportive of the girl's decision to report Joel, and hopes that it will be the kick he needs to stop his alarming behaviour patterns. She then passes on her number in case she needs anything further from the family. Later that night, she comes up with a cunning plan, inspired by Ross' actions Down Under. She offers Isla a sum of cash in exchange for her silence and withdrawal of the complaint, promising to make sure that Joel doesn't land himself in anymore hot water. More Trending Tommy's mum Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) has her own concerns about Joel's influence over her son, but it soon becomes clear that Vicki is the one who she should be worried about. When Joel makes attempts at reconciling with his mate, Tommy is left shaken by an ultimatum from Vicki. She warns that unless he keeps his mouth shut, she will implicate him in the crime.
