DM Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan, said everyone is happy to welcome the yatris to the Valley.
'People from civil society, traders associations, apple growers and Administration have come here to welcome the yatris. We are very happy to welcome all the pilgrims to J&K,' Khan said.
The first batch of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims was warmly welcomed in Qazigund, Kulgam, with flowers. People from civil society, traders, apple growers, and the administration also joined in the traditional welcome.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary welcomed the first batch of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims in Banihal.
Chaudhary said the region is witnessing a festival-like atmosphere, with people from all communities warmly welcoming pilgrims.
Expressing hope for the restoration of statehood, he said, 'We will pray to Lord Bhola Shankar that next time we welcome these pilgrims to the state of J&K, not to a UT...'
He praised the efforts of security forces and the administration and called the Omar Abdullah-led government patriotic and committed to national unity.
'...We are here to welcome the pilgrims. The Security Forces and the Administration are fulfilling their responsibilities. Today, we can see a festival-like atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, and this is the beauty of Jammu and Kashmir. People from all communities are welcoming pilgrims here. We have heard that LG sahib has prayed for J&K to be granted statehood status...Omar Abdullah's government is a patriotic government, and we always take steps to strengthen the nation.'
The 38-day yatra will commence on July 3 and conclude on August 9. The pilgrimage will follow two routes - the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The first batch of pilgrims will depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on July 2.
Security in the whole Jammu region has been massively heightened for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Over 50,000 personnel, including those from the CRPF, Army, and Police, have been deployed, along with continuous monitoring through CCTV, drones, jammers, and facial recognition technology, along the route.
Proper arrangements have been made for medical teams, air ambulances, and emergency evacuation plans to ensure maximum safety during the pilgrimage. (ANI)

Kamal Haasan Demands Machine-Readable Electoral Rolls, Slams Rahul Gandhi's Detention
Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) today, raising what he called "grave questions" about the integrity of the country's electoral rolls. In a strongly worded letter to the people of India, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder asked why the ECI refused to publish rolls in machine-readable formats that allow independent verification and why it demanded a written oath from Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi when the evidence he cited came from the poll body's records itself. The Rajya Sabha MP's statement comes amid the ongoing controversy about bogus voters in the Mahadevapura assembly segment in Karnataka. Last week, Rahul Gandhi alleged the assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Parliamentary Constituency had more than 1,00,000 fake votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Mr Gandhi accused the BJP of benefiting from duplicate entries, fake and invalid addresses, bulk voters at single addresses, invalid photos, and misuse of Form 6 - allegations the BJP has dismissed as baseless and politically motivated. The ECI's insistence on complaints under oath and its reluctance to probe the issue have drawn criticism from legal experts and opposition leaders, who warn the episode has caused a major dent in the poll body's credibility. Citing suspicious additions to rolls in Karnataka and Maharashtra and mass deletions in Bihar's Special Intensive Revision exercise, Mr Haasan questioned whether "addition sometimes resembles subtraction." He demanded that the ECI rise to the standards set by former Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan, "who was impartial, fearless and above partisan politics," and permit independent audits so that "people see the truth rather than be told to take comfort in authority's word." Mr Haasan also condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc MPs while they were marching from Parliament to the ECI headquarters in Delhi to demand answers on alleged voter roll manipulation. "Detaining the people's elected voices for peacefully demanding answers for the people's rights is an assault on democracy itself. To arrest people's representatives for seeking transparency is to arrest democracy," Haasan wrote, warning that such actions "cannot stand in a free republic." Framing the issue as a national cause beyond party lines, Mr Haasan urged all political parties, including those in the NDA, to unite for transparency. "Defend the vote, and you defend the republic," he said, calling on citizens to take the demand for reform "from village to town, from town to city, to every corner of India." BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi dismissed Mr Gandhi's claims as baseless and accused him of demeaning constitutional institutions. With many independent agencies exposing large-scale irregularities, building on the issue raised by Rahul Gandhi, the issue has turned into a huge embarrassment for the poll panel.

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut defamation trial resumes in Bathinda court
Bathinda: The defamation case against Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut resumed in a Bathinda court on Monday, 10 days after the Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed her petition. The trial court has adjourned the matter to Oct 4 for further orders. The proceedings were stayed for over three years while Ranaut's petition was pending before the high court. The petition, which challenged summons issued by the Bathinda court on Feb 22 and April 19, 2022, was dismissed on Aug 1 by a bench led by Justice Tribhuvan Dahia. The defamation case was filed by Mahinder Kaur, an elderly woman farmer from Bahadurgarh Jandian village, following a 2020 social media post by Ranaut. In a retweet, the actress allegedly misidentified Mahinder Kaur as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh and claimed that such women were available for Rs 100 in protests. Kaur, a farm activist, was participating in protests against the now-scrapped farm laws at the Delhi borders. Her husband, Labh Singh, appeared on her behalf during Monday's hearing. Kaur's counsel, Raghbir Singh Behniwal, informed the court that the high court's order had not placed a stay on the trial's continuation. Ranaut's lawyers, however, told the court they intend to challenge the high court's decision in the Supreme Court. M V Govindan slams Pamplany for ‘opportunistic' stance
1 2 Kozhikode: CPM state secretary M V Govindan launched a scathing attack on Thalassery archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, describing him as someone who is very opportunistic in his stance. Speaking at a party function in Kannur on Monday, Govindan said there wouldn't be anyone else who displays opportunism so strongly. Govindan said that when nuns were arrested in Chhattisgarh, Pamplany had spoken against the BJP, but once the nuns were granted bail, he went on to praise Union home minister Amit Shah and others. "Priests even went to the RSS office with cakes to curry flavour," he added. DYFI state secretary V K Sanoj too had criticized Pamplany the other day saying that people like him could meet the fate of Niemoller, the German pastor who initially supported Hitler but was later imprisoned for opposing his regime.
