Suggesting Tipu conceptualised KRS dam is pandering to vote bank, says BJP

The controversy erupted when social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa, in charge of Mysuru district, during an event in Srirangapatna Sunday, said, "Tipu Sultan was the first to conceptualise the dam and laid the foundation stone, but nobody has the courage to say this. BR Ambedkar has said that those who don't know history cannot create history."
Reacting strongly, BJP state president BY Vijayendra accused Congress of trying to rewrite well-documented history.
In a post, he said, "Tipu died in 1799, while the dam was planned more than a century later in 1908."

He went on to accuse Congress of pandering to vote-bank politics, while defaming the Wadiyars.
"From the beginning, CM Siddaramaiah has shown contempt towards the royal family. Just recently, MLC Yathindra stated that his father (Siddaramaiah) was greater than Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wadiyar. Now, Mahadevappa has insulted the legacy and sacrifice behind the construction of the Kannambadi dam by crediting Tipu Sultan.

. Historians say there is indeed an inscription to the effect that Tipu was keen on building a dam but say the reservoir in Mandya was conceptualised and built under the patronage of Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Parties step up campaign ahead of Bihar Assembly elections
Ahead of Assembly elections in Bihar, which are likely to be held in October–November later this year, political parties have begun finalising schedules and programmes of senior leaders to woo voters. Union Home Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district on Friday to lay the foundation stone for a newly constructed temple dedicated to the goddess Sita. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other senior Cabinet colleagues are also expected to be present on the occasion along with Mr. Shah. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and senior State officials visited the site on August 6 to review preparations for the foundation-laying ceremony. The State government on Thursday urged the Union Railway Minister to construct a railway station at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district for the convenience of devotees visiting the site. Sitamarhi MP Devesh Chandra Thakur, from the ruling alliance partner Janata Dal (United), said a large number of people, including those from Janakpur in neighbouring Nepal, were expected to participate in the ceremony. The Union government had earlier announced plans to connect Ayodhya's Ram Temple with the Sita temple at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi. The State government has sanctioned over ₹882 crore for the proposed 156-foot tall main temple structure - five feet shorter than Ayodhya's 161-foot Ram Temple - spread over 67 acres with wide walkways and green cover. The government aims to develop the site as a religious tourism hub. Similarly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Gaya in the Magadh division, marking his sixth visit to the election-bound State since January this year. He is expected to inaugurate infrastructure projects worth several hundred crore rupees and address a public meeting. The venue for the meeting is yet to be finalised. 'It will be like a Bharat Jodo Yatra of our leader,' party leader and MLC Prem Chandra Mishra said. From August 13 to 15, Congress ticket aspirants are expected to submit their forms at the party headquarters in Sadaqat Ashram, Patna. 'Congress Bihar screening committee will be in Patna on August 13–14 at the party headquarters and they will be taking applications from MLA aspirants,' party spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, meanwhile, has been announcing a series of sops for teachers, State government employees, sanitation workers and others. Mr. Kumar has also been inaugurating several pending projects aimed at public welfare. Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has been travelling across various districts, criticising the ruling NDA. Advt Advt A recent report published by UK-China Transparency (UKCT), which investigates transparency matters between the UK and China, has revealed systematic efforts by Beijing to inhibit academic freedom and influence the narrative concerning China within British universities, according to a report from publication, titled "Cold Crises: Academic Freedom and Interference in China Studies in the UK", claims that the Chinese government is employing students, scholars, and financial leverage to intimidate academics and limit discussions on sensitive subjects, thereby creating a culture of fear across UK on feedback from 50 scholars specialising in China studies throughout UK institutions, the findings depict a troubling scenario of surveillance, harassment, and self-censorship in academia. UKCT reports that Chinese students and academics are sometimes pressured through threats against family members back home to monitor their peers and report on politically sensitive conversations to Chinese authorities."We're observing you," one academic recounted being told by a visiting scholar from China, while others shared experiences of online harassment and intimidation, including notifications from Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, as mentioned in the Phayul report suggests that Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs), present in most UK universities and connected to the CCP, act as "vectors for surveillance and repression", fostering a climate of fear, especially for students of Chinese direct intimidation, the CCP is alleged to exploit financial dependencies to apply pressure on university administrations. This law also addresses foreign partnerships, such as those with Confucius Institutes, which may jeopardise ideological neutrality or impose constraints on teaching and findings in the UKCT report resonate with broader apprehensions reflected in other nations, including Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United States, where previous documentation has indicated Chinese influence within academic institutions using similar tactics involving surveillance, visa control, and pressure on diaspora communities, as noted by Phayul.
