The Tampa Bay Lightning are demonstrating that intelligent spending could very well be the solution to Stanley Cup relevance in the modern
NHL
. In The Athletic's most recent Contract Efficiency Rankings for the 2025–26 season, Tampa Bay Lightning is at the top of the league in getting value from their players versus cap expense.
In a league where the difference between a playoff spot and an early summer is paper-thin, effective contracts may indeed be the new competitive edge.
Tampa Bay Lightning lead The Athletic's 2025-26 contract efficiency rankings
A dramatic increase in the salary cap has shifted how NHL teams maintain their rosters. No longer simply about superstar power, front offices are now measured by how much value they get out of every dollar invested, particularly on long-term contracts. That's where Dom Luszczyszyn's Contract Efficiency Rankings are helpful.
His yearly assessment, omitting entry-level deals, looks at a player's on-ice expected contribution and compares it with his salary, highlighting teams that spend effectively.
This season, the Tampa Bay Lightning rose from outside the top 10 to No. 1—a measure of how fortunes can change immediately when smart management is paired with player development. Though they can no longer be said to be a dynasty, the Lightning's smart financial planning is holding them in the title hunt.

How contract strategy does help teams lead to Stanley Cup
It's also worth mentioning that contract efficiency is not simply about underpaying skill—it's about not having dead weight and avoiding terrible long-term deals. Teams that get locked into bloated deals tend to get handcuffed during key windows.
At the same time, the Tampa Bay Lightning's rise up the rankings hints at a franchise not merely holding its own during the cap age but flourishing within it. From extending productive veterans at reasonable prices to finding breakout players before their price becomes prohibitive, their cap approach seems methodical and successful.
While no formula for winning a Stanley Cup exists, contract efficiency is as close to a blueprint as the contemporary NHL has. The Tampa Bay Lightning are just one team that's increasing in value rankings and still a true threat, proving that fiscal responsibility and crafty roster assembly are as crucial as ever.

A challenging ACL 2 campaign awaits Mohun Bagan SG and FC Goa

Mohun Bagan Super Giant and FC Goa, the champion clubs of the country's top football tournaments, found their groups and opponents in the AFC Champions League Two first stage after the draw at football's continental body headquarters— AFC House — in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. Mohun Bagan, the League Shield and Cup winner of the Indian Super League (2024-25 season), has been drawn in Group C alongside Sepahan SC of Iran, Al Hussein SC of Jordan and Ahal FC of Turkmenistan. FC Goa, the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 winner, has been placed in Group D with Al Nassr Club of Saudi Arabia, which has former Ballon D'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in its ranks, as the top draw. The other two sides are Al Zawra SC of Iraq and FC Istiklol of Tajikistan. Goa qualified to the group stage after beating Al Seeb Club of Oman 2-1 in the preliminary stage play-off match at Fatorda on Wednesday. Mohun Bagan had directly qualified to the ACL 2 group stage by virtue of being the ISL topper. The initial league format has all teams in the group facing each other in a home and away, double-round robin format. The group stage will run from September 16 to December 24. The top two from each group will qualify for the Round of 16. Their reactions said it all 🤩🔥 — FC Goa (@FCGoaOfficial) August 15, 2025 The knock-out stage will be held between February 10 to 19, 2026. The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled between March 3 to 12 and April 7 to 15 while the final comes up on May 16, 2026. The Iranian club Sepahan, runner-up in the Persian Gulf Pro League 2024-25, will be Bagan's toughest opponent considering it came from Pot 1 in the draw which arranged the teams in four categories according to their rankings. The second team in the order is the Jordan Pro League champion Al Hussein SC while Bagan was placed in Pot 3. Ahal FC, the runner-up of Turkmenistan's top league Yokary Liga (2024) is the last name in the group. Hrithik Baab knew something before us 😉🔥 — FC Goa (@FCGoaOfficial) August 15, 2025 FC Goa (placed in pot 4) is up against a more fancied Al Nassr, the third-placed side from the Saudi Pro League. Al Nassr employs a constellation of global stars like Sadio Mane among others in addition to Ronaldo. The other teams are the Iraq Stars League runner-up Al Zawra'a SC and FC Istiklol, which is the Tajikistan Higher League champion.

ISL: AIFF to bring plight of clubs, players to SC's attention in Monday hearing

The AIFF will raise the ongoing ISL crisis before the Supreme Court when it convenes on Monday (Image via X/@IndianFootball) The All India Football Federation (AIFF) will raise the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) crisis before the Supreme Court when it convenes on Monday, amid growing concern for players, clubs and staff affected by the impasse. The apex court, which has reserved its verdict on the draft AIFF constitution, will hear the matter that day. The deadlock arises from the pending renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the AIFF, forcing ISL organisers to place the 2025-26 season 'on hold' since July 11. Several clubs have since halted operations or stopped paying salaries to players and support staff. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'A discussion was held between the legal representatives of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Super League (ISL) clubs, on Thursday, August 14, 2025,' the AIFF said in a statement on X. 'It has been agreed by all parties that the concerns of the ISL clubs… and the hardship being felt by the players and other stakeholders will be conveyed to the Hon'ble Supreme Court next week, for its kind consideration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo ' An AIFF source told PTI that they were ready to file a written application if the judges sought one. 'Yes, we will be attempting to mention but since judgement is reserved we have to see how the judges take it. If they feel there is merit… they may ask for an application to be filed. The plight of the players, clubs and football need to be brought to their notice,' a club representative told PTI. Poll Do you think the Supreme Court will resolve the ISL crisis effectively? Yes, they will find a solution No, it will take longer The move follows a joint appeal last week by all 11 ISL clubs urging the AIFF to present the situation in front of the court, stating that they would take legal action on their own if no steps were taken. Earlier, the AIFF had proposed holding the Super Cup in September to provide competitive matches in the absence of the league. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

NHL trade rumors heat up as Carey Price's contract linked to potential Chicago Blackhawks deal

The Montreal Canadiens could finally be on the verge of moving Carey Price's massive contract (Getty Images) The Montreal Canadiens could finally be on the verge of moving Carey Price's massive contract — and the Chicago Blackhawks might be the team to make it happen. With Price's deal entering its final year and carrying a $10.5 million cap hit, a proposed trade scenario has emerged that could benefit both sides while reshaping their near-term plans. Why the Blackhawks make sense as a landing spot for Carey Price's contract The Blackhawks currently sit just over $6 million above the salary cap floor and are expected to move several veterans by the trade deadline. Taking on Price's contract would give them a financial cushion and strategic flexibility. Analyst Tab Bamford suggests a swap in which Chicago would receive Price's contract, along with Montreal's 2026 and 2027 first-round picks, in exchange for goaltender Laurent Brossoit, forward Lukas Reichel, and three second-round picks spread across 2026 and 2027. For Chicago, the move would create a stockpile of draft capital — including three first-rounders in 2026 — giving them 'enough ammo to do something significant' in the future. And if the Hawks decide to make a big splash in free agency, Price's and Shea Weber's contracts could be placed on LTIR, unlocking more than $18 million in extra cap space. What Montreal gains — and the steep price they'd pay From Montreal's perspective, adding Brossoit would address a current depth issue behind starter Samuel Montembeault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo As Bamford bluntly put it, 'Right now, their backup is Kaapo Kahkonen — who is not good.' Brossoit's career .911 save percentage (.927 last season with Winnipeg) and Stanley Cup-winning experience with Vegas in 2023 make him an immediate upgrade. Reichel, meanwhile, is a 23-year-old former first-round pick who hasn't found his stride in Chicago. A fresh start in Montreal could unlock his potential, especially in a system eager to develop young forwards. The challenge for the Canadiens would be the heavy draft pick sacrifice — having already moved both 2025 first-rounders in the Noah Dobson trade, losing their '26 and '27 selections would test their long-term asset management. Also Read: NHL Trade Rumors: Connor McDavid linked to Maple Leafs and $3.5B Rangers if Oilers extension talks stall Still, if Montreal believes Brossoit and Reichel can contribute immediately, and if shedding Price's cap hit accelerates their rebuild, this could be the kind of high-risk, high-reward move that changes their trajectory.
