Labuan blitz nets 20 illegal workers

LABUAN: The Labuan Immigration Department detained 20 undocumented migrant workers at three construction sites as part of a nationwide initiative. Labuan Immigration Director Raymond Entalai said the simultaneous operation was carried out with the involvement of 32 personnel from the Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Police and the National Registration Department (NRD). He said 48 individuals were inspected, with most found to possess valid travel documents, including 'clearance letters' issued by the Sabah Immigration Department. 'However, 20 individuals, comprising Philippine nationals (including a woman) and one Indonesian were detained for lacking valid documentation. 'The individuals detained, aged between 15 and 60, are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155), which prohibits non-citizens from entering or staying in Malaysia without a valid pass or permit,' Raymond said at the operation site at Jalan Patau-Patau, here, on Wednesday. He said the investigations would also be extended under Section 39(b) of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957 (Revised 1983), to ensure compliance with national registration standards. Raymond said the detained individuals have been placed at a temporary immigration depot for further investigation. In addition, he said, three employers suspected of hiring the undocumented workers would be summoned by the authorities under Form 29. Raymond reminded employers to strictly adhere to immigration laws and to consult the department for guidance before employing foreign workers. 'This operation reflects our ongoing commitment to enforcing immigration regulations and ensuring that all foreign workers in Malaysia comply with the legal entry and employment requirements,' he said. Nearly 200 foreigners held in KL nightclub raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 200 foreigners were detained in an Immigration Department raid on a nightclub offering "dugem" music in Pudu, here, early today. According to a post on the department's official Facebook page, the raid was conducted following public complaints and two weeks of intelligence gathering by its Enforcement Division in Putrajaya. "Dugem" is an acronym for "Dunia Gemerlap" (shining world), referring to the nightlife scene, particularly clubbing and discotheques. The colloquial term is also associated with alcohol consumption or taking illicit substances. "An operations team consisting of 129 officers was deployed to the premises, along with 11 officers from the National Registration Department. "A total of 310 individuals were initially checked during the operation — 128 foreign men, 116 foreign women and 66 Malaysian citizens," the department said. It added that 185 Indonesians, comprising 106 men and 79 women, a Cambodian man and woman, and a Nepalese man, all aged between 21 and 35, were detained for various immigration offenses. "The offences include overstaying and not possessing valid travel documents. "All detainees were taken to the KLIA and Lenggeng Immigration Detention Depots for investigation and further action." The department also said eight summonses were issued to witnesses, including the club supervisor, premises caretaker and a female disc-jockey (DJ) working at the venue. The nightclub's modus operandi was to feature local and foreign DJs playing "dugem" music, primarily targeting foreigners from Indonesia. "The club operated from 11pm to 5am. At the time of the raid, the foreign patrons were found engrossed in the 'dugem' music." "All foreigners were held under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," it said.

Its director, Raymond Entalai said those arrested comprised three men, six women, four boys, and two girls -- all Filipino nationals. These foreigners are suspected of committing various immigration offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) during the raids carried out from 1 am tp 4 am. 'The ages of these individuals detained were from one year old to 77 years old, and they are currently being held at the Labuan police lock-up and Labuan Immigration depot for further investigation and action,' he said to Bernama today. Raymond said the Immigration Department would continue to take strict action against anyone found violating the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963, and Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM). This includes action against those who hire or harbour undocumented migrants.
