Oasis fans just realising why Noel Gallagher always has straw in mouth before gigs
Oasis fans were left wondering why songwriter Noel Gallagher has been spotted chewing on straws in the lead-up to gigs. He and Liam Gallagher reunited for their first shows together in 16 years, with Oasis back on stage for a series of sold-out shows. But a strange detail has come to light that fans are only just figuring out.
Noel, the 58-year-old songwriter behind hits like Don't Look Back in Anger and Wonderwall, has been spotted in public chewing on a blue and white striped straw. Members of the public have since worked out why he keeps doing it.
A post to X collected images of Gallagher chewing on the drinking utensil, with fans asking why he is "chewing on that all day long". Listeners appear to have figured out why Noel is continually spotted with the straw, and it seems to be having an effect on his live performances.
Fans believe the straw is a "vocal straw", with Gallagher chewing on it as a way to relax his vocal cords in the lead-up to performances with brother Liam, 52.
One user claimed: "It relaxes vocal cords." Another added: "Train and rest and control the vocal cords and breathing technique by blowing inside."
And it appears the fans were right. The Manchester-native revealed he was advised to prepare his voice for gigs with a straw warm-up by a doctor, after experiencing issues on his tour with U2 in 2019. On Matt Morgan's Funny How? podcast, he explained: "He gave me his paper straw and said, 'Half an hour before you go on, in your room, put some music on and put this straw in your mouth and just hum along to whatever comes on and your vocal cords will warm up'.
"I was a bit sceptical, but it really does work. Usually, it would take me a couple of tunes to get into it and now I'm straight into it, straight off the bat."
Noel added he now carries them around "everywhere".
Fans have picked up on a series of other subtle details during the Oasis Live '25 tour, with some suggesting Noel's guitar playing is getting better and better.
The tour, which kicked off in Cardiff on July 4, has seen the band also play a series of dates in their hometown of Manchester. Performances in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin are set to follow.
But fans were pleased to see Noel not just training his vocal cords for the show but offering career-best work on the guitar. Fans noted he was sounding relaxed and "getting better every night" of the tour.
A fan pointed out that Noel's musical skills appear to be sharpening with every show. "Noel's guitar playing is getting better every night," the fan said, clearly impressed by the older Gallagher brother.
"After seeing Anais' [Noel's daughter] Instagram story of her dad playing the Champagne Supernova solo last night, I couldn't help but notice how Noel is seemingly getting better.
"Makes a lot of sense, with how little lead guitar he had done since (even before) Oasis originally split up. He definitely seemed a bit out of his element playing solos again, especially at Cardiff night one (makes sense).
Other fans have since agreed, observing that the High Flying Birds frontman appears to have become much more at ease onstage since Oasis' first gig.
One admirer commented: "It's only been three shows and he already seems more confident than the first night in Cardiff." Another added: "The only time I've ever seen Noel look nervous and overwhelmed was on the first night of the reunion."

Oasis fans spot clue and are convinced Gallagher brothers 'missed' touring together
Oasis fans believe Noel and Liam Gallagher have 'missed' touring with one another, and that one particular clue in Cardiff highlights the band's love for live shows Fans believe they have spotted a clue during an Oasis show which suggests Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher "missed" performing together. The Gallagher brothers reunited for their first shows in 16 years, kicking off their Live '25 dates in Cardiff earlier this month. Attendees of the sold out shows in Cardiff and Manchester have since suggested the Liam and Noel look delighted to be back performing together. A post to the r/Oasis Reddit page had a fan share their thoughts on how the brothers seemed to be relishing their time on stage together. Oasis recently performed their final Manchester date, with the series of sold out shows at Heaton Park received well by those in attendance. Even those who didn't manage to bag tickets to the show said they enjoyed the experience, sitting on top of "Gallagher hill" and watching the show from a vantage point outside the festival grounds. The post to the Oasis subreddit reads: "I feel as if Noel missed this a lot more than he admitted earlier on. Was at Heaton Park on Saturday, one of the many things I took away from that special night was how much Noel was loving it. "I can understand the first few years with the High Flying Birds post break up. But he repeatedly gave the 'been there, done that, don't need to do it again' speech in response to comeback rumours through the years. "I don't know, I'm no mind reader but I think deep down, he really, really missed doing shows like this as 'Oasis' all along. "I absolutely loved to watch how much he enjoyed it, it just added to how epic the night was. I wish I could experience that all over again." Another fan has suggested a moment at the Cardiff gig highlighted just how much Gallagher had missed performing with his brother and the rest of the Oasis members. They wrote: "His face during Slide Away in Cardiff said it all." Fans are now convinced the brothers have loved the shows so much they may head back into the recording studio for their first album since Dig Out Your Soul. One fan wrote: "I really do wonder if a new album would be in the works after the tour ends." Another suggested: "I think so. I don't think this reformation was ever going to be a one-off thing unless him and Liam didn't get on, and they're loving it. Someone like Noel and someone like Liam can't resist making new music, and with them together again it's inevitable." Though a new album hadn't been planned and was even ruled out by management, fans are hopeful Oasis will change their mind and return to the studio. One listener wrote: "Even if a new album wasn't planned, I bet he's thinking about it now. But I think it's better if they just take one step at a time: let's finish the tour well (something I have no doubt will happen), and then we'll see."

Oasis dedicate song to Ozzy Osbourne as they begin series of gigs in London
Liam Gallagher told tens of thousands of fans of his pride as the band graced the stage at Wembley Stadium for the first time in more than a decade. Just three songs into their much-anticipated appearance, he declared the crowd was 'f****** beautiful', having bowed to the sea of raised arms before him. Liam and brother Noel played with their band for the first of seven nights at the stadium on Friday – with five shows over the next week and two more scheduled in September. It was the first time they had appeared together onstage at the London venue since July 12 2009, when they performed during their Dig Out Your Soul tour. Towards the end of the gig, they paid tribute to Osbourne. Lead singer Liam said: 'I wanna dedicate this one to Ozzy Osbourne, rock 'n' roll star.' The Black Sabbath star's death at the age of 76 was announced earlier this week. Oasis superfans in bucket hats and branded T-shirts had packed the Tube en route to the gig from earlier in the day, with international accents denoting the band's worldwide popularity. As with previous gigs Liam and Noel walked onstage hand in hand, opened with Hello and proceeded to belt out many of their classics including Some Might Say and Morning Glory. The packed-out stadium was in full voice throughout and at one point Liam threw a tambourine into the jubilant crowd, while later positioning one on top of his head. Despite pledging to concentrate on his vocals rather than talking – telling those gathered 'every time I open my mouth at these gigs I seem to get myself into a lot of trouble so I'm just going to do the singing' – Liam later engaged in some light football banter. The well-known Manchester City fan appeared to poke fun at Arsenal fans in the crowd, joking about their position in the Premier league. Phone camera torches lit up the stadium as darkness fell and crowd-pleasers Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger and Champagne Supernova closed the gig. At various points Noel thanked the crowd, with Liam telling them they had been 'amazing', ahead of fireworks erupting into the London sky. Friday's show – the eighth of the tour – followed a five-night run of homecoming gigs in Manchester's Heaton Park and the two opening shows in Cardiff earlier this month. Following the first part of their Wembley stint, the band will head up north to Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium followed by Dublin's Croke Park. The group will head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America later in the year. Oasis announced their reunion tour in August of last year – 16 years after their dramatic split in 2009 which saw Noel quit following a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. While fans were excited at the Britpop band's reunion, many were left outraged after some standard tickets in the UK and Ireland jumped from £148 to £355. The controversy prompted the Government and the UK's competition watchdog to pledge to look at the use of dynamic pricing.
