Can India Still Withdraw From Asia Cup 2025? A Look Back At When Kapil Devs India, The Defending Champions, Pulled Out Of Asia Cup In 1986
The Asia Cup 2025 will be held from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, ending weeks of uncertainty over India's participation. The tournament's fate was under a cloud after India–Pakistan relations soured, with some quarters calling for a boycott of Pakistan at global events. However, with PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi serving as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, the BCCI had no authority to cancel or postpone the event, though they could have withdrawn. The Indian board kept silent for weeks before officially confirming participation, much to the relief of organisers and fans. India's Previous Withdrawal From the Asia Cup In 1986 If India had pulled out this time, it would not have been unprecedented. Many fans may not know that barring Sri Lanka, no team including India and Pakistan has played in all 17 editions of the Asia Cup. India skipped the 1986 edition despite being defending champions, having won the inaugural tournament in 1984. The withdrawal came due to unrest in Sri Lanka, the host nation at the time, amid the civil war between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The Indian government cited player safety as the priority, leaving Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh to contest for the title. India's Group and Fixtures for Asia Cup 2025 India have been drawn in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. Group B features Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh. India's group-stage schedule is as follows: vs UAE - September 10 vs Pakistan - September 14 vs Oman - September 19 Only the top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 4s, with matches scheduled based on the final standings. India's Predicted Squad for Asia Cup 2025 India: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel. With the opener against UAE fast approaching, selectors face tough calls, particularly over Shubman Gill's role. His form has been outstanding, but the leadership choice will hinge on whether experience is valued over current momentum. Assurance on India-Pakistan Clash Despite political tensions, ACC and PCB officials have assured that the much-anticipated India–Pakistan clash on September 14 will go ahead as planned. 'While I cannot give a formal guarantee, there is no risk of Pakistan and India not playing. The Asia Cup cannot be compared to private tournaments like the World Championship of Legends, where India refused to play against Pakistan,' ECB COO Subhan Ahmed told the Pakistan Observer.

Asia Cup 2025: BCCI Narrows Indias Vice-Captain Race To Two Big Contenders
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 around August 19–20, once the National Cricket Academy (NCA) provides final fitness reports of all players, including captain Suryakumar Yadav, who has resumed batting practice in Bengaluru. The tournament will be held in the UAE from September 9, with India opening their campaign against the hosts UAE at the Dubai International Stadium on September 10. Vice-Captaincy Race: Axar Patel vs Shubman Gill The team management is weighing its options for vice-captaincy. Shubman Gill, fresh from an outstanding performance in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, is a strong contender. However, all-rounder Axar Patel who was recently elevated to deputy in the home T20I series against England is also in the fray. Both men have experience in the role: Gill served as vice-captain when Suryakumar took over as full-time T20I skipper last year in Sri Lanka, while Axar assumed the role more recently. Likely Squad and Key Selections According to PTI, selectors are inclined towards maintaining continuity, a formula that has worked well under Suryakumar's tenure. Bumrah Returns: Jasprit Bumrah is set to feature in Asia Cup 2025 and may be rested for the opening Test of the West Indies tour in October. Top-Order Stars: Abhishek Sharma, recently ranked world No. 1 T20 batter in ICC rankings, is expected to feature. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, praised for his solid form with both bat and gloves last season, is in line to be first-choice keeper. Second Keeper Battle: The reserve wicketkeeper slot will likely be contested between Jitesh Sharma, who excelled as a finisher in RCB's IPL-winning run, and Dhruv Jurel, who played in the most recent T20I series. Middle Order & All-Rounders: Shivam Dube, who impressed against England, is set to return. Hardik Pandya remains the first-choice seam-bowling all-rounder, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the spin-bowling all-rounder options. Spin Department: Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy are expected to complete the spin attack. Pace Attack: Alongside Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, the third pacer's spot is between Prasidh Krishna (25 wickets in IPL 2025) and Harshit Rana. Players Missing Out The report adds that Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and KL Rahul are unlikely to be considered. Rahul, in particular, has been ruled out of contention as he does not regularly bat in the middle order. Selection Dilemma at the Top A BCCI insider told PTI: 'Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order.' Likely Contenders for Asia Cup 2025 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel. This Asia Cup will be Suryakumar Yadav's first major multi-team tournament as India's full-time T20I captain, and with multiple in-form contenders vying for spots especially at the top order selectors will have to make some tough calls before the squad is locked in. What Gautam Gambhir Had Said On Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's 2027 ODI World Cup Ambition
As the debate over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma 's ODI future rages on social media, a statement by India head coach Gautam Gambhir on the duo's future has resurfaced on social media. Before the Indian team's tour of England, Gambhir was asked about Virat and Rohit's ODI World Cup 2027 ambition and if they would remain a part of the head coach's plans for the showpiece event. Gambhir, as honest and blunt as he always is, said that though the T20 World Cup 2026 is the next big event that Team India needs to focus on, it's only performance that will keep Virat and Rohit afloat if they are to feature in the marquee event in 2027. "We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament that is going to happen in India, which is in February-March. So the entire focus at the moment, after England, will be on the T20 World Cup, and November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away," Gambhir had told CNN-News18 in an interview. "And I've always said one thing - if you keep performing, age is just a number," he added. India are to feature in a 3-match ODI series against Australia in October this year, post which a similar assignment against South Africa has also been scheduled. Certain reports, however, suggest that the BCCI selection committee is keen to move on from the veteran duo and give youngsters a chance, in order to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Some claim that the Australia series could be the last for Rohit and Kohli, though they can keep themselves afloat by returning to domestic cricket. The Vijay Hazare Trophy and India A games could be crucial for Kohli and Rohit if they are to extend their ODI careers and remain in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Though Gambhir made it clear that performance is going to be decisive when it comes to ODI team selection, there are a few more factors that might play a role when it comes to Rohit and Virat's future.
