Varsity student sexual assault case: Court finds accused guilty, to pronounce verdict on June 2
Chennai, A Mahila Court here on Wednesday pronounced as guilty, the accused biriyani vendor in the sensational Anna University woman student sexual assault case A Gnanasekaran, with the prosecution seeking "maximum punishment" for him.
Holding that the prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, the court found Gnanasekaran guilty of the charges framed against him in the sexual assault case that rocked Tamil Nadu in December 2024. Mahila Court Judge Rajalakshmi said she will pronounce the verdict in the case on June 2.
The government counsel later told reporters that the prosecution filed 11 charges against Gnanasekaran and proved all of them using documentary and forensic evidence.
"Today, he was pronounced guilty by the court. The details of the sentence will be given on June 2," she said.
Giving a brief update on the proceedings on Wednesday, she indicated that Gnanasekaran sought a lenient sentence claiming he was the sole bread-winner of the family.
"The prosecution strongly objected to this and sought the maximum punishment," she added. The sensational case had triggered a political row over Gnanasekaran's alleged connections with the ruling DMK in the state, although the party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin had in January said he was only a sympathiser and supporter, and not a member of the Dravidian party.
The case came to light after the victim lodged a complaint before the All Women Police Station in Kotturpuram here on December 23 last year. In her complaint, the victim alleged that Gnanasekaran threatened her when she was with a male friend and then sexually harassed her.
Gnanasekaran was later arrested.
The FIR of the case was downloaded from the CCTNS website of Tamil Nadu police and broadcast by certain sections of the media which created a furore.
Later, the Madras High Court transferred the investigation of the case to a Special Investigation Team, which also probed the FIR leak.
The SIT filed a charge sheet in February before a magistrate court. Thereafter, the case was transferred to the Mahila Court.
The Mahila court framed charges against Gnanasekaran under sections various sections of the BNS, including sexual harassment, BNSS, IT Act and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police busted an ATM fraud and fake registration certificate (RC) syndicate with the arrest of three individuals involved in a sophisticated scam using Photoshop to forge vehicle documents. The case was initiated on a complaint by Ikrar Salmani, who reported that two unknown men fraudulently exchanged his uncle's ATM card and withdrew Rs 43,451 from his account on May 24. Following the registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS, a team launched an investigation. By analysing over 70 CCTV camera footages, the suspects were identified. On May 31, acting on a tip-off, the team apprehended Alok Yadav (30), a resident of Gautampuri, from Nathu Colony Chowk. A fake RC and scooter used in the crime were seized from him. Further interrogation led to the arrest of Vipin Kumar alias Rajender (38), a broker from Loni, Ghaziabad, who revealed the involvement of Dheeraj Singh (31), the mastermind behind the forged RCs. "Dheeraj was found using Photoshop and a vehicle info app on his mobile to create fake documents," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Priya Gautam. Recoveries include the scooter, fake number plate, five ATM cards, and mobile phones containing Photoshop data. Punjab: 3 murder suspects held after Ferozepur police encounter
Three men suspected to be involved in the murder of a 29-year-old Ferozepur resident, Ashu Monga, on Thursday were arrested after an encounter with the police on Friday night. The encounter took place near a canal bridge between Ghall Khurd village and Ratta Khera, 19km from Ferozepur. Ferozepur deputy inspector general of police Harmanbir Singh Gill said that the trio were attempting to flee on a motorcycle and a two-wheeler when they were intercepted at a police checkpoint. 'On being stopped, the three suspects opened fire on the police. They sustained bullet injuries to their legs in retaliatory fire and were taken into custody,' he said. Following the joint operation of the counter intelligence team and the local police, four pistols were recovered from the suspects, who are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Ferozepur. Ferozepur senior superintendent of police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu identified the three men as Sonu, Amrik Singh, and Baljinder Singh. The scooter and motorcycle used in the crime have also been confiscated. On Friday, the police had arrested two more accused, Angrez Singh and Joginder Singh for Monga's murder outside a tattoo shop on Thursday. The victim was allegedly dragged out and killed following a group rivalry. The incident was captured on video by a local resident, who uploaded it on social media. A case was registered against seven accused on the complaint of Monga's wife Pawanpreet Kaur. The seven named are notorious gangster Ashish Chopra, Angrez Singh, Joginder Singh, Amrik Singh, Gurdit Singh, Shivam Sehgal and Yuvraj Singh. Five unidentified accomplices were also booked for murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as the Arms Act. In the meantime, a cross-case was also registered under multiple sections of the BNS and Arms Act against Gurjinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Lakha, Amarjeet Singh, Dev Sharma, and deceased Ashu Monga, based on a complaint by Arshdeep Singh. SSP Sidhu said that efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused.

Teenager stabbed to death in central Delhi; two minor boys held
Two minors have been apprehended for allegedly stabbing a 16-year-old boy to death in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area, an official said on Saturday (June 7, 2025). The accused, both aged 14 and 15, were caught on Thursday, and the murder weapon, a knife, was recovered from their possession, he said. "A PCR call was received on June 2 regarding an unconscious and bleeding boy near Durga Mandir in Taliwalan Basti. A police team rushed to the spot and found the minor grievously injured. He was taken to RML Hospital, where doctors declared him dead," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan said. An eyewitness told police that he and the victim were returning home when two unidentified boys suddenly approached from behind and attacked the 16-year-old with a knife before fleeing the spot. A case under relevant sections of the BNS was registered, and an investigation was launched. On Thursday, based on inputs, the two accused minors were apprehended from near Jeewan Mala Hospital. "During interrogation, the juveniles confessed to their involvement in the incident. A blood-stained knife used in the crime was recovered from a nearby park," the officer said. Further probe is underway to establish the motive behind the attack, he added.
