PETALING JAYA: Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek has turned down an invitation by Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail to debate on the direction and future of the party's women's wing. According to Sinar Harian, Fadhlina said debating was not a priority at the moment as her main focus was on strengthening the party and supporting its president, Anwar Ibrahim. 'My answer is the same as Nurul Izzah (Anwar)'s: there's no need for it. Right now, our focus is on strengthening the party. 'All the initiatives we've undertaken are aimed at strengthening the party and showing full support for our president,' she told a press conference following a campaign event in Seremban last night. Last Friday, Rodziah, who is once again challenging Fadhlina for the post of Wanita PKR chief, invited the education minister to a debate on the future direction of the wing. Rodziah said she was following in the footsteps of PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who had challenged Nurul Izzah to a debate just two days earlier.

Nurul Izzah had also declined the debate invitation from Rafizi, saying her priority was to de-escalate tensions within the party and focus on engagement with delegates. Fadhlina said debates could be constructive when used to discuss substantive policy issues. 'But in the current climate, our focus should be on unity and strengthening the party,' she said. In March, Rodziah revealed that she was contesting the Wanita PKR chief post again, saying the wing had become 'lethargic' under Fadhlina's leadership, with 'many areas that need improvement'. The wing's deputy chief, Juwairiya Zulkifli, dismissed Rodziah's claim and said that leadership styles vary among individuals. In the 2022 party polls, Fadhlina defeated Rodziah for the Wanita PKR chief post by just 32 votes, securing 18,923 votes to Rodziah's 18,891. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Wanita PKR urges crackdown on child grooming, slams social media pages promoting sexual harassment

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Authorities in particular and society at large have been urged to take firm and prompt action in tackling the grooming and sexual harassment of children. Condemning the existence of social media pages that promote such elements, Wanita PKR called on the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry to take the necessary action. 'The authorities must ensure that children remain protected under the laws of the country,' said Wanita PKR in a Facebook post. Wanita PKR also urged parents and society to remain vigilant and protect children from sexual violence by monitoring the presence of such social media pages and offensive comments that violate the dignity of children, encouraging them to report to the authorities promptly. 'Wanita PKR also pledged to play a proactive role, including carrying out a series of advocacy and child protection literacy programmes within communities, aimed at raising public awareness to safeguard children and the wider community from sexual harassment,' it added. — Bernama

High-profile cases now wrapped up in six months

Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Azam said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. - Bernama pic BANGI: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has shortened the investigation period for high-profile cases from one and a half years to just six months, thanks to the implementation of new approaches, including upskilling officers and utilising the latest technology. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. Advertisement 'In the past, one high-profile case could take us about one and a half years to complete the investigation papers, but now we can complete them within six months. Secondly, we enhance our officers' skills and knowledge. 'About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses. So, in a very short period, we can locate the suspect or the person we want to find,' he said. Azam said this at a press conference after attending the 2025 MACC-NTU International Law Enforcement Programme Convocation here today. In addition, Azam said the MACC has also established strategic collaborations with external parties to strengthen its investigation capabilities, especially in technical aspects and financial forensics. He said international cooperation also plays a vital role, particularly in tracing and recovering assets located abroad. 'We also collaborate with many parties. For example, our collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants helps us with asset tracing and forensic accounting,' he said. On the need to increase staffing, Azam said that although there was a rise in the number of reports from 2020 to April 2025, totalling 34,819, mass recruitment of MACC officers is not the primary solution to strengthening anti-corruption efforts. 'I do not see that adding a large number of MACC officers is the solution to combat corruption in this country. The most important thing is our approach,' he said, adding that during the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals. He said that out of these arrests, 2,479 individuals were prosecuted and 1,274 were subsequently convicted in court. The MACC also recorded significant financial enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion. At today's convocation, 250 people graduated from the programme, and they have now been appointed as new MACC officers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
