Drainage, irrigation projects require proper process, no shortcuts ― Minister
Lee pointed out that multiple stages are involved, including planning, applying for funding, and engaging consultants.
'All these projects take time ― from planning to securing funds, up to awarding the tenders to contractors. We cannot take shortcuts. Consultants must be appointed to conduct studies, surveys, and to draft plans.
'The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) must then submit these plans to the State Planning Authority (SPA) for approval before proceeding with project design and tender,' he told reporters during a site visit to the proposed drainage works at Taman Lopeng here yesterday.
As such, Lee urged residents to understand the situation and not assume that the authorities are ignoring flood issues in their area.
He said DID Miri has drawn up plans for a major drainage upgrade project covering areas from Taman Tunku to Padang Kerbau.
'The RM50-million project has been in the pipeline for nearly three years and funding for its implementation has been approved,' he said.
The project, slated to commence by the end of this year, aims to mitigate flood in low-lying and flood-prone zones from Taman Tunku to Padang Kerbau.
Lee added that this is one of two major drainage projects approved for his constituency.
'The other involves areas in Senadin and Lutong with a project value of RM45 million,' he added.
On the maintenance of an earth drain stretching two kilometres in Pujut Padang Kerbau, Lee said the flood drain discharges into Sungai Dalam.
According to him, RM75,000 has been allocated for cleaning works, which commenced last week and are expected to be completed within two weeks.
Also present was Miri DID engineer Daniel Chen.

KULIM: The Home Ministry is still awaiting a complete report on the investigation into enforcement officers suspected of aiding a 'flying passport' syndicate at Malaysia's border checkpoints. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the ministry will receive the report from Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. 'Let him (Shuhaily) handle it first... I believe we have placed the right person in the right position,' Saifuddin told reporters after officiating the 53rd anniversary celebration of the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) at Dataran Kulim. READ ALSO: Johor officers remanded for flying passport bribery scheme The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently arrested four enforcement officers for allegedly accepting bribes of around RM3,000 to facilitate 'flying passport' activities at the Johor-Singapore border. Two were detained by AKPS' Compliance Unit during an inspection, while two others were arrested for suspected collusion. Meanwhile, Saifuddin urged RELA members to acquire new skills and improve training to broaden their functions. He highlighted the need for RELA to expand beyond traditional roles like traffic control and disaster response. 'This shift aims to elevate RELA's role to include responsibilities in sensitive areas such as border control. Of course, RELA will not act alone. Its purpose is to complement and support existing enforcement agencies,' he said. The ministry will also assess RELA's needs, particularly concerning personnel welfare. - Bernama

Report Pending On Officers Accused In ‘Flying Passport' Bribery Case
KULIM, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry is still awaiting a full report on the investigation into enforcement officers suspected of abetting a 'flying passport' syndicate while on duty at the country's border checkpoints. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will obtain a report from Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. 'Let him (Shuhaily) handle it first… I believe we have placed the right person in the right position,' he told reporters after officiating the 53rd anniversary celebration of the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) at Dataran Kulim here today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested four enforcement officers suspected of receiving bribes of about RM3,000 for facilitating the 'flying passport' activity at the motorcycle entry zone checkpoint at the Johor-Singapore border. Two of them were detained by AKPS' Compliance Unit during an inspection at the counter yesterday, while two other officers were arrested for allegedly colluding in the operation. Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said RELA members must equip themselves with new skills and enhance training to expand the scope of their functions. He stressed the need for a shift in RELA's core duties from the usual roles of traffic control, disaster response and managing public events. 'This shift aims to elevate RELA's role to include responsibilities in sensitive areas such as border control. 'Of course, RELA will not act alone. Its purpose is to complement and support existing enforcement agencies. The ministry sees potential for RELA to contribute further,' he said.

Better deal for media urged
Published on: Sunday, July 27, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 27, 2025 By: Mohd Nazlie Zainul Text Size: Fahmi (2nd from right) presenting the Kasih@Hawana contribution to Vicky Sylvester (3rd from right), a photographer with the Sabah Information Department. PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. To date, 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefitted from the fund. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
