BBC Says 'Unprecedented Funding Challenge' Lies Ahead As Content Spend Set To Fall By $200M

BBC Says 'Unprecedented Funding Challenge' Lies Ahead As Content Spend Set To Fall By $200M

Yahoo31-03-2025
The BBC faces an 'unprecedented content funding challenge' in the year to come, the corporation's Annual Plan setting out priorities for the next 12 months has said.
As we have reported in depth so far this year, the BBC flagged 'co-production partnerships with global streamers and media companies [that] have reduced across the sector' as contributing to the major challenge.

'Without intervention, it will be difficult to maintain the current ambition and volume of UK content,' said the plan.
The much-publicized drop-off in the American co-pro market has left numerous BBC shows stuck in funding limbo, although today's Annual Plan didn't go into further detail around these shows, which we know includes the likes of its Shuggie Bain adaptation.
The BBC did, however, reveal that its content spend for the coming 12 months will slide by £150M ($200M) to £2.5B. This figure does tend to fluctuate and is often dependent on whether there is a big sporting event coming up in the summer.
Having forecast a surplus for this year after an enormous £492M deficit last year as part of a 'transformational budget,' the BBC in fact posted another deficit – although a far lower £33M 'due to some delayed transformation costs,' the report said. The BBC's group income will be just over £6B and license fee income is set to rise by around £100M to £3.9B, which is helped by an increase in the annual fee but 'partly offset by a 1% decline in the number of licence fee payers,' according to the plan.
The BBC unsurprisingly raised concerns about future funding challenges but used the plan to passionately argue that it is the premier maker of British content. It cited research that found 16% of UK adults agree that Netflix shows the lives of people in the UK, compared with 64% for the BBC. This comes with Netflix's Adolescence dominating headlines worldwide, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying in the past few minutes that the show about teenage masculinity and the damaging impact of social media 'hit home hard.'
'As viewing shifts to international platforms, consumption of British content is at risk,' said the BBC plan. 'The BBC invests more in original British creativity than anyone else, keeping the UK's creative economy strong and supporting new talent across the sector.'
The BBC said viewing across its TV channels and iPlayer is more than Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ combined, and ahead of YouTube and TikTok combined. Adolescence has topped the UK ratings charts for the past couple of weeks.
The document revealed plans to 'move more creative spend, programming and journalism outside of London to better represent and reflect audiences,' citing upcoming examples like Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd's new show Half Man, which is made with HBO.
BBC Commercial, meanwhile, which incorporates BBC Studios, will 'continue to invest in infrastructure, services and content.'
BBC Director General Tim Davie said: 'We are focused on our mission to deliver value for all, through our journalism, our storytelling and our unique ability to bring people together. The UK's creative industry continues to change rapidly, as does the world around us. This plan sets out how the BBC continues to evolve for audiences, both on and off air, but also how we will support and invest in the wider industry.'

This New Wellness Resort Has The Largest Spa In Central America—And Sits Inside A Volcanic Crater

Hotel La Compañía del Valle, located in El Valle del Anton, Panama. Hotel La Compañía del Valle For decades, Costa Rica has been a magnet for wellness-centered getaways packed with surf, sun and spas, setting it apart from anywhere else in the region. But what of this Central American haven's next-door neighbor, Panama? Despite sharing much of the same natural beauty, excellent connectivity, and impressive biodiversity, Panama is only just getting started when it comes to drawing tourism, of the wellness-focused variety and otherwise. The debut of Hotel La Compañía del Valle, complete with the largest spa in Central America, will change that. At a time when Panama is poised to draw more stopover travelers than ever, this mountain retreat helps put one of the most beautiful corners of the country on display as a destination worth traveling for, offering a wellness experience travelers are craving. The property has a focus on art and wellness, including a one-of-a-kind sculpture park. Hotel La Compañía del Valle With its eponymous canal and bustling business center, Panama City has long been thought of as more of a place to pass through than to savor. But those in-the-know travelers who've heard the whispers about just how cool Panama City really is will recognize the name of Hotel La Compañía. After a years-long restoration and transformation of centuries-old buildings in the Casco Antiguo neighborhood of Panama City, Hotel La Compañía debuted in 2022 and immediately set a new standard for travelers in the city. The hotel occupies an entire city block within Panama City's historic center, with edifications dating back to the 1600s when Jesuit missionaries from La Compañía de Jesús built the first foundations of the property. Now, the 88-room luxury boutique hotel comprises a Spanish colonial era wing, an 18th century French wing, and a 20th century American wing, each with their own unique style and historical details. Anchoring the revitalization of Panama City's historic center and creating arguably the first luxury property of its kind in the city, Hotel La Compañía has felt nothing less than revolutionary. Its new sister resort located in El Valle de Anton seeks to inspire the same excitement around one of the country's most serene spots. "Hotel La Compañía is our guiding light," said Chris Lenz, the owner and visionary behind La Compañía Hotels & Resorts, as we walked the grounds at the newest property. "We knew we had to keep them similar in their essence and feel, and in several of the important details and luxuries. But this is not designed to be a carbon copy of the city property; it can't be.' Instead, Lenz offers an important comparison: 'Hotel La Compañía del Valle is like [Hotel La Compañía] in that it is made exclusively for its location, fitting the experience travelers are looking for when they come here." Hotel La Compañía del Valle has 70 rooms and suites. Hotel La Compañía del Valle Inside Hotel La Compañía del Valle Travelers come to El Valle de Ancon looking for rest and relaxation, and they'll certainly find it here. Hotel La Compañía del Valle is a Tuscan-inspired boutique property spread across several sprawling acres that blend into the forested sides of a long extinct volcanic crater. The hotel's four wings each make the most of breathtaking mountain views and seem to magnify the fresh mountain air that had beckoned city dwellers for generations. Each of the property's 70 rooms and suites offers an oversized balcony or terrace, bringing the outside in in a way that feels intimately authentic to the reason visitors make the journey to this Eden in the first place. Rooms and suites are thoughtfully designed with furnishings and decor pieces that marry modernity with elegance, with tranquil color palettes that draw in glimpses of the lush surroundings through floor-to-ceiling windows. Amenities include Molton Brown bath products and Nespresso machines for preparing fresh Panamanian coffee. Beds here are so cozy that you'll want to order the same bedding for your own home. Hotel La Compañía del Valle also prides itself on its collection of one-of-a-kind art and sculptures. Its sprawling sculpture park is just as much designed to get visitors into a reflective state as the oversized wellness center is. A rendering of the spa at Hotel La Compañía del Valle, set to debut within the next few months. Hotel La Compañía del Valle A Wellness Getaway The Elysium Spa, an 18,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art space, will tie together the entire experience. El Valle de Anton has always been first and foremost a retreat from the city, so this expansive wellness-focused space feels like a natural fit for the destination. Though work continues at the spa, with its expected opening date scheduled for later this year, I got to peek behind the curtain while I visited and wow, is it impressive. Stone-clad changing rooms and relaxation spaces lead down to Roman baths, where a waterfall invites guests into an indoor-outdoor pool. Some of the most important leaders in the wellness world consulted on creating the space and the extensive menu of treatments it will offer. Think floatation therapy, chocolate and wine therapies, and more, far beyond just a traditional menus of spas, facials and scrubs. Hotel La Compañía del Valle within the crater of a long inactive volcano. Hotel La Compañía del Valle Panama's Untouched Interior With such an expansive spa, this mountain resort is a place to easily spend an entire weekend without setting foot off the property. However, the beauty of the destination is also part of the hotel's appeal. The town of El Valle de Anton is admittedly tiny, but the stunning mountainsides surrounding are the the perfect addition for a more active wellness getaway. Hikes range from the relatively easy to more adrenaline pumping, but most offer sweeping views as a well-earned reward. Before I set out on my trek to La India Dormida, the hotel concierge answered all my questions, though they also arranged guides for experiences ranging from hiking and horseback riding to e-biking and day trips further afield. Venture outside of the resort and you'll notice that despite being a weekend escape for Panama City's elite, there's truly nothing like Hotel La Compañía del Valle in the area. Though Panama has welcomed a handful of upscale resorts along the coast in recent years, especially in blossoming Bocas del Toro near the border with Costa Rica, there's little in its lush, ecologically diverse interior to speak of. La Compañía Hotels & Resorts is, again, the first of its kind. Sculptures on the property at Hotel La Compañía del Valle. Hotel La Compañía del Valle Pieces of Panama Many guests will spend a few days in Panama City at the brand's original Casco Antiguo property before heading into the mountains to unwind at the new resort; the properties were designed to fit together well within one travel experience, and they accomplish their goal. But more than just building brand loyalty, Lenz expresses pride that the new hotel opens travel into areas of the country that many people still have yet to experience. 'Panama has everything going for it, and we're excited to welcome more visitors to see it in a new way,' he says. After all, it's the guiding light of a brand making a meaningful impact in one of the region's most exciting new destinations.

Social media hit Ilona Maher takes women's rugby onto new plane

Ilona Maher transcends women's rugby, giving it a profile outside of the sport in the way that Mia Hamm did for women's football. Now the stage is set at the women's World Cup in England for the American to spark even more interest. The 29-year-old phenomenon has attracted over eight million followers on social media, not only through her sporting exploits but also for her promotion of body positivity. She played a pivotal role in the USA women's team winning a first ever Olympic medal, beating Australia in the third-place playoff in Paris last year. On the back of that achievement, Maher featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition and appeared in the US version of hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars", finishing runner-up. The Maher-fuelled improvement of the USA team attracted the attention of American investor Michele Kang who donated $4 million to help develop the USA Women's Rugby Sevens Team over four years. In another sport, Kang owns the Lyon women's football team, the eight-time European champions. Maher's days in Paris were not just spent playing rugby but also attracting even more followers with her pithy social media posts. She compared life in the Athletes' Village to a reality TV show, in one humorous posting saying she was there "looking for love", to which her friend replies: "No you are here to play rugby." In more reflective mode in Paris, she told the Bleacher Report one of her goals was trying to reassure "girls" that playing sport did not take away their "girliness". "What we're trying to show is the beauty that in sports you can be a badass on the field, you can be a beast on the field, but also be a beauty," she said. "It's really important for me because I want girls to see what their body is capable of. "It's not just to be looked at, objectified, but it's strong and it's fast, and it's brilliant." Maher, who through her body positivity push has become a brand ambassador for a deodorant and a skincare product she co-founded, revels in her global popularity and being "America's sweetheart." "I love when people call me that because I feel like I'm maybe not the image you would have of a sweetheart in some sense of the word,' Maher told CNN in January this year. "I'm honoured." - 'Tone down' - Maher, who hails from Vermont, may be extrovert and cheerful but she keeps her ego in check by showing appreciation to those women sports stars who paved the way for her. Hamm, her fellow American and a groundbreaking football superstar of the 1990s and early noughties, a two-time Olympic and World Cup winner, features high on the list. "I remember in our gym we always had a poster of Mia Hamm, and that was always cool to look up to her," Maher told the Bleacher Report. Closer to home, though, she is part of a tight-knit family unit, with her father Michael, a keen rugby player who introduced her to the sport, Netherlands-born mum Mieneke and sisters Olivia and Adrianna. Elder sister Olivia has a considerable social media presence herself. From her father Ilona not only learned about rugby but also a crucial life lesson when he defended her at a softball event. One of the other dads complained that Maher's pitches were unhittable but he was put in his place by Maher senior. "I think that was the first moment of being told to never tone it down," she told CNN. "Because that dad over there … wanted me to tone myself down so that it could be easier for (his daughter). "But that's not the world, is it? The world isn't going to tone down for you." Instead Maher has upped the ante and the fruits for women's rugby have been plentiful as New Zealand legend Portia Woodman-Wickliffe told AFP. "Having someone from America with that American market who is very confident, loves rugby, loves supporting women's bodies, someone as vocal as that is amazing for us," Woodman-Wickliffe said. "We need to capitalise and follow her as much as we can." pi/gj

BLACKPINK at Wembley Stadium review: The world's biggest girl group are at the top of their game

Olivia Rodrigo owning Glastonbury, Sabrina Carpenter playing two nights at Hyde Park, Charli XCX's Brat victory lap, 2025 has undoubtedly been the summer of the pop girlies. It's only right then that BLACKPINK, the biggest girl band in the world, get in on the action. The K-pop titans' Deadline world tour took over London's Wembley Stadium for the first of two shows on Friday night, following an 18-month hiatus where the four-piece worked on solo projects. Each member was given plenty of space to flex during the two-hour show. Jisoo performed her dreamy Your Love accompanied by confetti and chairography, Jennie was every bit the swaggering rockstar for her snarling viral hit Like Jennie. Lisa couldn't have been more different to her softly-spoken The White Lotus character during a trio of brilliant, high-energy tracks from debut solo album Alter Ego while Rosé went full '00s for the snotty pop-punk inspired Toxic and a surprisingly chaotic APT.. All four are clearly stars and looked very comfortable on their own in the spotlight but together, they're on a whole other level. Previous BLACKPINK tours have been incredibly choreographed events, performed with an eventual concert movie in mind. Deadline was a far more relaxed affair – well, as relaxed as a six-act stadium show with a curved runway, fireworks and an entire dance academy can really be. There was still plenty of polish and no one could accuse the group of phoning it in, but they spent as much energy interacting with the crowd and trying to make each other laugh as they did recreating their slick music videos. The whole thrilling gig was wonderfully playful. At one-point FKA Twigs joined Rosé backstage for a scone and a shot. Why? Why not. A live band gave earlier, more polite tracks WHISTLE and BOOMBAYAH an added bite while the obnoxiously OTT pop of Pink Venom and Pretty Savage were clearly written to make a stadium full of people dance. Their music has always been ambitious, taking the best bits of countless different genres to create perfectly-formed pop spectaculars, but there was a joyous, infectious energy that came with performing it in one of the biggest venues around. As the first K-pop group to headline Wembley Stadium, BLACKPINK made sure to have the most fun possible, but they also took every opportunity to soak up the 'surreal' and 'insane' achievement. 'It really is such an honour,' said Jennie, thanking the crowd for supporting the band over the past nine years. There have been rumours circulating online that BLACKPINK will go on a more permanent hiatus after this tour, but at no point during the show did it feel like things were winding down. 'I wanted to do a song that felt like a goodbye, just for the meantime,' Rosé said before the tender Dance All Night, deliberately hinting at a return, while the mini-movies that were played during the gig were a celebration of the girls coming back together. Despite their historic legacy it was the recently released Jump, an urgent mash-up of Spice Girls camaraderie and the energy of a sweaty rave, that got the biggest reaction of the night. It's such a banger, it was played twice. What more could you possibly want?
