Security forces recover 14 IEDs, huge cache of explosives from Jharkhand's Saranda forest

RANCHI: In yet another achievement by the security forces, as many as 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and a huge cache of explosives weighing more than 50 kg were recovered during a search operation in the forests of Chitpil under Toklo Police Station in Chaibasa.
The IEDs were destroyed at the spot by the bomb disposal squad due to security reasons.
According to police, following a tip-off, a joint operation was launched involving personnel from Jharkhand Police and the CRPF's 60th Battalion. The operation was focused on forested and hilly areas near the Chaibasa–Seraikela border, a region known for frequent Maoist activity.
'During the search operation, the security forces discovered 14 powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted with an intent to ambush patrolling units. Due to security reasons, these IEDs were safely defused by the bomb disposal squad,' stated an official communique from Chaibasa Police.
In addition to that, an underground Maoist explosive storage site was found, containing 52 polybags filled with nearly 52 kgs of a white powder suspected to be ammonium nitrate — commonly used for making bombs by the Maoists, it said.

Kulgam's Akhal Forest Operation Drags Into Day 12; Forces Wait Before Delivering Final Blow

The forces are relying on patience, aiming to exhaust the terrorists' supplies and morale Twelve days after security forces launched an anti-terror operation in the dense forests of Akhal in Kulgam's Dewsar area, the encounter is still ongoing, marking one of the Valley's longest continuous operations in recent memory. The operation began on August 1, following specific inputs received by the security forces indicating that a heavily armed group, believed to be Pakistani nationals, had taken shelter in the dense Akhal forest. The initial cordon and search operation led to the encounter. So far, one terrorist has been killed in the operation named 'Operation Akhal". Two brave soldiers, Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, made the supreme sacrifice, while ten other personnel have been injured. Thick Woods, Tough Terrain According to Lt Gen Devendra Pratap Pandey (Retd), former commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, the slow progress is deliberate. 'This is thick jungle, with heavy undergrowth. Rushing in risks more casualties," he said. 'We've already lost two brave men, and there's no need to take more hits. The aim is to eliminate the terrorists without collateral damage." He assured News18 that the terrorists would be eliminated. Experts say the terrain of the Akhal forest favours the militants, with natural caves, multiple exit routes, and a direct link to the Pir Panjal range. The group is suspected to be from The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, and is believed to possess night-vision devices, long-range rifles, and ample ammunition. The Army, J&K Police's Special Operations Group, CRPF commandos, and elite Para units have secured the area in a multi-layered cordon. Armed drones and helicopters provide surveillance and precision strike options. Instead of storming in, the forces are relying on patience, aiming to exhaust the terrorists' supplies and morale before delivering the final blow The 'Mahadev' Template The ongoing Kulgam standoff contrasts sharply with Operation Mahadev, conducted last month in the Dachigam forests. Acting on 14 days of pinpoint intelligence, security forces eliminated three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack in under an hour. That mission, involving the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police, was widely praised for its precision, coordination, and lack of collateral damage. Satellite-based tracking, human intelligence from locals, and rapid multi-agency mobilisation ensured the operation was over almost as soon as it began. Waiting for the Right Moment Sources say the Akhal mission is being guided by the same principle—strike once conditions favour the security forces. With senior officers, including the Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastav, and J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat, visiting the site, troops on the ground have been told there is no rush. The message is clear: patience now, a decisive finish later. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 21:57 IST News india Kulgam's Akhal Forest Operation Drags Into Day 12; Forces Wait Before Delivering Final Blow Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Gadchiroli: Yechali village says no to Naxals, declares ‘gaonbandi'

The Gram Panchayat of Yechali village in Gadchiroli's Bhamragarh taluka passed a resolution last month declaring a 'gaonbandi', a complete ban on the entry and support of Naxals. A letter to this effect was formally handed over to officials at the Mannerajaram Police Station on August 7 during a Krishi Melava (agriculture fair) in the village. The villages in Bhamragarh including Yechali were once known as strongholds of the Naxals, but for a few years now, several villages have been adopting a 'gaonbandi' (village ban). Earlier in 2024, seven tribal hamlets of Bhamragarh tehsil in the foothills of Abujhamarh also banned the CPI-Maoist from entering their villages. This year too in February, two villages in Bhamragarh declared gaonbandi against Naxals. The resolution marks a significant shift for Yechali, which once faced persistent trouble due to Naxal presence. During a major operation in April, 2025, Jhansi Doghe Talandi alias Gangu (member, Bhamragad Dalam), age 30, a resident of Yechali, was arrested by Gadchiroli police in a major operation. Jhansi had joined the Naxal movement in 2010. She has 14 criminal cases filed against her, which include 12 related to armed clashes and one for murder. But the construction of the Mannerajaram Police Station in 2023, which is just 4 km away, has brought a sense of security among the villagers. Police officials say they have been working for the past few years to build trust, visiting the village regularly, holding meetings, and encouraging residents to resist Naxal influence. 'We have been giving them suggestions and guiding them on what to do. This year, they took the initiative themselves and passed the resolution,' said a police officer at Mannerajaram Police Station. According to the Gadchiroli police officials, a total of 1133 villages have declared 'gaobandi' in Gadchiroli district till date since 2003. The 'Gaonbandi' scheme was introduced in 2003 by the government to curb the Naxal activities. The state planning commission department sanctions a reward of Rs 3 lakh each to villages that do not support Naxals in any way. The resolution is first passed at the village gram sabha level, which later informs a local authority. It is then the district collector who recommends the village for a reward.

What happens to Z+ security of leaders after they are detained, arrested?

On Monday, New Delhi witnessed a high-voltage protest when nearly 300 Opposition MPs tried to march to the Election Commission office over "vote theft" allegations. They were stopped midway by the Delhi Police, who detained the leaders and put them on a bus. Among those detained were Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Jairam Ramesh, and Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra and Mitali in situations like this, what exactly do the security personnel, of varying categories, namely, X, Y, Y-plus, Z, Z-plus, or Special Protection Group (SPG), do when the police are physically removing the very individuals they are responsible for safeguarding?Take Rahul Gandhi, for example, who has Z-plus security cover. What happens at such a moment? Who is ultimately responsible for the leader's safety? How do these security teams react during detention? And once the Opposition MPs were taken to a place like the Parliament Street Police Station, what were their roles? Do they ever intervene in the process? To find out, India Today Digital spoke to a senior serving IPS officer and a former Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer who served in the Special Protection Group (SPG). The SPG provides cover to the highest security category in India, whose sole protectee at present is PM Narendra Modi. Before 2019, other than the PM, three Gandhi family members also had SPG cover for 28 INDIA'S VIP SECURITY TIERS ARE STRUCTURED FROM X TO SPGIndia's security cover for high-risk individuals is divided into six tiers: X, Y, Y-plus, Z, Z-plus, and SPG. Each tier is tailored to the threat level assessed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) based on inputs from intelligence agencies like the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW).The X category provides two armed police personnel, no Y category includes eight personnel, with one or two Y-plus category involves 11 personnel, including two to four Z category mandates the deployment of 22 personnel, including four to six National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, while Z-plus, the highest non-SPG tier, involves 55 personnel, including over 10 NSG commandos, a bulletproof car, and escorts in three the top is the SPG. It is an elite force under the Cabinet Secretariat, which exclusively protects the Prime Minister and, in some cases, their immediate family, with highly trained personnel and classified MHA decides these categorisations, often for ministers due to their positions, but private individuals also receive cover based on specific threat from the CRPF, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and NSG implement these protocols. The CRPF and the CISF collectively secure around 350 VIPs, 35 of whom are under the Z-plus situations where individuals being guarded by personnel from multiple security agencies are detained, there is a well-defined protocol and their actions are HAPPENS TO VIP SECURITY WHEN LEADER IS DETAINED OR LATHICHARGED UPON?A serving senior IPS officer, speaking to India Today Digital, explained, "If the person with VIP security is arrested, the security personnel remain outside the police station premises. After the individual's release, the police or security personnel report back to the person."While a high-value individual being guarded in detention remains under the custody of the detaining agency, their security personnel coordinate closely with that agency."Once the arrested or detained person is released, the security detail immediately resumes full charge of their protection," the senior IPS officer CRPF officer who served in the SPG elaborated, saying, "The security personnel provided to the politicians with Z+ cover are from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF, not state police services). They will protect the person they are assigned to, but won't take any step that comes in the way of the police or any civilian authority".But what happens in the case the politician is part of a crowd being lathicharged by the police?advertisement"Security officers try to protect the leader, but won't do anything that might end up injuring the police personnel. The officials in the security detail are mostly aware of the politician's movements and plans, including of protests, well ahead," the officer, who was once on SPG duty, there are times when a politician takes them by surprise, and the security personnel then have to act impromptu."In case a politician is being detained, the officers in their security detail won't step in, but move to secure the vehicle and premises where they are kept," the CAPF officer told India Today Digital."The security officers work in close coordination with the police, and are kept updated. So, when such a detained leader is released from custody, they assume responsibility for their cover right from the police station," he when leaders like Rahul Gandhi, under Z-plus security, are detained, their CAPF personnel maintain protection without interfering with police actions. They would have secured the area and coordinated with the Delhi Police. Once released, Rahul's security would have resumed full security delicate balance ensures the safety of high-value individuals while respecting legal processes. It also shows the disciplined coordination between the CAPF, the local police and other law enforcement agencies who all are discharging their duties.- Ends(With inputs from Priyanjali Narayan) advertisement
