‘No issue' in alliance with BJP, says AIADMK

The Hindu2 days ago
The recent assertion of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami that his party would secure a majority on its own in the 2026 Assembly poll and form a government is viewed in certain quarters as a message to the party's ally, the BJP. The Dravidian major, however, says that there is 'no issue' in its alliance with the national party.
Mr. Palaniswami's clarification on the nature of government, made at a public event in Ulundurpettai of the Kallakurichi district on Sunday (June 29, 2025), came a few days after Union Minister for Home Affairs and BJP's senior leader Amit Shah's interview to a couple of Tamil dailies last week, wherein he made it clear that there would be a coalition government in Tamil Nadu after the Assembly election.
Addressing a public meeting at Melavalavu near Madurai on Monday (June 30), founder of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Thol. Thirumavalavan stated that he viewed Mr. Palaniswami's assertion as a point of contradiction between the position of the AIADMK and that of Mr. Shah.
As far as the idea of a coalition government in the State is concerned, there is little difference between the two Dravidian majors. In 2006, even when the DMK did not obtain a majority of its own, it ran a single-party government for the next five years with outside support of parties, including the Congress. As for the AIADMK, former Minister Vaigaichelvan told the media recently that the concept would 'never and ever' find acceptance among the people of the State.
What the Dravidian majors have in mind is the failure of the DMK-Congress combine in capturing power in the 1980 Assembly election when the constituents of the coalition contested an equal number of seats and after a round of wrangling between the two parties, the Congress had agreed to have the then DMK chief M. Karunanidhi projected as the alliance's candidate for the post of Chief Minister. But at the hustings, the coalition did not click, whereas the AIADMK returned to power in a spectacular fashion.
When asked whether Mr. Palaniswami's speech was a message to the BJP, former Revenue Minister and the AIADMK's deputy floor leader in the Assembly R.B. Udhayakumar told The Hindu on Tuesday (July 1) that the announcement regarding the alliance was made in April only after a 'detailed discussion' between Mr. Palaniswami and Mr. Shah. 'So, there is no issue in the coalition. However, the issue is only over the understanding the language used,' Mr. Udhayakumar explained.

A local whose house has been damaged following a cloudburst said, "Everything got washed away after a cloudburst. We are staying at our relatives' house." At least 37 people have died and Rs 400 crore worth of property was damaged as torrential rains disrupted life across Himachal Pradesh, according to the state Disaster Management Authority. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the state until July 7. According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority and the Revenue Department, the state has suffered damages amounting to more than Rs 400 crore due to incessant monsoon rains. Search, rescue, and relief operations are underway, particularly in the worst-hit Mandi district, where several roads remain blocked and essential services are disrupted. "We have recorded over Rs 400 crore in losses so far, as entered in our system. But the actual damage is likely to be much higher," said DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and the Revenue Department, while speaking to the media on Wednesday. "Our primary focus at the moment is on search, rescue, and restoration. Detailed damage assessment will take time," he added. The worst-affected area remains Thunag subdivision of Mandi, where major restoration efforts are in progress.

Is it right to play sports with Pak post-Pahalgam attack, asks Aaditya Thackeray; slams govt over security

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday questioned the appropriateness of India playing cricket and hockey matches against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup tournaments, amid the hostilities between the two countries in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack . Talking to reporters on the premises of the Vidhan Bhavan, the state legislature complex here, he said several questions concerning national security were still unanswered. "Is it right to play matches with Pakistan when the country is sponsoring terror against us? Should the Indian team play Asia Cup cricket and hockey tournaments against Pakistan? We want a clear answer from the BJP and the Union government," Thackeray said. The BJP-led government appears to be testing the waters with the Asia Cup hockey scheduled to start in the last week of August. India is the host country and matches will be played in Bihar. It is setting the stage for a potential cricket match in the UAE during the Asia Cup, the Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA said. Read more: Pakistan's hockey team to be allowed to compete at Asia Cup in India: Report Live Events "If the BCCI allows the Indian cricket team to play against Pakistan, will the BJP label it as anti-national as it does with others?" he asked. The Asia Cup T20 is expected to be held in September, while the Asia Cup Hockey tournament is scheduled to begin on August 27 in Bihar. Thackeray also expressed dissatisfaction over the Centre's response to the Pahalgam terror attack and the handling of national security. "Firstly, the police released a sketch of the accused only to be termed as fake by the NIA later. After Operation Sindoor, government delegations were sent to several countries as if nothing had happened. Is this how national security is protected?" the former Maharashtra minister said. "There are still several unanswered questions. We will not accept silence as a response," he said. Thackeray further raised concerns about the country's diplomatic outreach. "Despite India's repeated objections, Pakistan continues to receive financial assistance from institutions like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. It has now even assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council. What has the External Affairs Ministry achieved with its outreach?" he questioned. Turning to cricketing ties, Thackeray took a veiled dig at International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah, stating, "Even if the BCCI decides to oppose playing against Pakistan, will the ICC under the leadership of Jay Shah actually listen?"

HC dismisses Congress pleas against Maharashtra CM Fadnavis, BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar over 2024 polls

NAGPUR: The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed the election petitions filed by defeated Congress candidates against Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior BJP leader and former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, and others. Justice Pravin Patil ruled that the petitions were not maintainable due to technical deficiencies. The Congress candidates—Praful Gudadhe, Girish Pandav, and others—had challenged the validity of the 2024 Assembly elections, alleging irregularities and violations of the Representation of the People Act. However, the court held that the petitions lacked essential particulars and were not in conformity with the statutory requirements for filing election challenges. Consequently, all the petitions were summarily dismissed. Petitioners' counsel Pavan Dahat told TOI they would challenge the High Court verdicts in the Supreme Court at the earliest. The development marks a setback for the Congress, which had alleged misuse of government machinery during the last year's elections.
