Five detained for vandalising investor Sushil Kedia's Mumbai office amid Marathi row

Hindustan Times05-07-2025
Five persons were detained on Saturday for allegedly vandalising investor Sushil Kedia's office in Mumbai's Worli after his post challenging Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over speaking Marathi. Some individuals had reached Sushil Kedia's office in the morning and thrown stones at his office, while raising slogans in support of Marathi and MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Kedia had earlier posted on X challenging Raj Thackeray over the Marathi row, saying he would not learn the language. 'I don't know Marathi properly even after living for 30 years in Mumbai, and with your gross misconduct, I have made it a resolution that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus I take pratigya, I won't learn Marathi. Kya karna hai bol?' Kedia had said in a post on X.
However, hours after the incident, Kedia issued an apology for his statements, while saying that he had made them under 'pressure' and 'duress'. 'My tweet happened in the wrong state of mind under duress and stress and now it is being manipulated to serve the interest of those who are looking to gain from this controversy,"Kedia said.
'Having come under pressure mentally from the violence inflicted on those who do not know Marathi, I ended up overreacting,' he said in the video posted to X.
While withdrawing the remarks, Kedia also praised Raj Thackeray, saying that he had always had 'appreciation' and 'gratitude' for the MNS chief. He hailed Thackeray for 'the strong issues he raises', saying that the MNS chief had the 'strength' to stand up for issues concerning everyone.
Kedia said that he was an 'ardent follower' of Thackeray, but had 'overreacted' because 'our own people have been loggerheads with each other'.
The investor had initially reacted to an incident in Thane's Bhayander, wherein a group of men wearing MNS scarves had beaten up a stall owner because he did not speak Marathi.

Only Dhankhar, PM Modi know real reason behind VP's exit: Mallikarjun Kharge

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said he has no information on the actual reason for Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President, holding that it was for Dhankhar to tell what really happened, as the matter was between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi . "I don't know all those details. He (Dhankhar) was always on the govt's side. He should say what happened," Kharge was reported as saying by news agency PTI, in response to a question on whether Dhankhar was forced to resign as he spoke in favour of farmers. Kharge was at Vijayapura in Karnataka. "When we raised several issues concerning farmers, the poor, international issues or foreign policy, he never used to give us an opportunity (in Rajya Sabha as its Chairman)," the Congress president said. "When we tried to raise issues by giving notices on issues regarding the poor, atrocities against women, Dalits and the downtrodden, and incidents like Hindu-Muslim clashes, he did not give us an opportunity. It (the reason for Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President) is between him and Modi. We don't have any information on that," Kharge clarified. Notwithstanding Kharge's stance, senior leaders from his party have, since Dhankhar's abrupt departure as VP, have been asserting that there is far more to the episode than meets the eye.

Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam official suspended for misbehaving with consumer

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said. Arbitrary behaviour of any staff member hindering development will be strongly dealt with, the minister said in the statement. 'Despite substantial investments in power infrastructure – over Rs 26,000 crore in the last three years – the image of the government and the department is being damaged by the carelessness of a few employees. 'In view of the state's development needs and the rights of the consumers, such irresponsibility will no longer be accepted," Sharma said. PTI-2022 exam: 167 booked for forged degrees from JS University

Edited 399 Jaipur: Police's special operations group (SOG) has unearthed a major fraud in the 2022 Physical Training Instructor (PTI) recruitment exam, with hundreds of candidates having used forged BPEd degrees from JS University, based in Shikohabad of Uttar Pradesh, to clear the exam. Acting on digital evidence retrieved from the university's server, which logs tamper-proof timestamps of printed mark sheets, the SOG on Saturday registered an FIR against 167 individuals, including 165 selected candidates, rest are JS University officials and unknown accused. The probe builds on arrests made in March this year when the university's Chancellor, Registrar, and a middleman were arrested in a forged degree racket case. As per the FIR filed by SOG, investigators focused on 203 selected candidates from JS University's academic sessions 2017–2019, 2018–2020, 2019–2021, and 2020–2022, and found that only one had a marksheet printed during the official academic session (2018–2020). The remaining marksheets were generated during or immediately before the recruitment process—many on a single date, Oct 15, 2022—signalling mass forgery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo Prior to this, an FIR was filed by SOG against several other candidates who were selected after passing exams with fake degrees and dummy candidates. As per the latest FIR, JS University is authorised to admit only 100 students annually for the BPEd course. At most, 400 valid graduates from four academic sessions should have been eligible. Yet, 2,082 applicants with JS University degrees appeared for the PTI exam. SOG found that 25 candidates originally claimed to have degrees from other universities but later submitted BPEd degrees from JS University. Another 26 had mismatched academic sessions between their forms and documents. Nine applicants listed DPEd credentials but submitted BPEd degrees during verification. Forty-three candidates from the 2020–22 batch submitted results dated after the Sept 25, 2022, eligibility cut-off. For the same academic session, candidates presented different result dates—an anomaly officials say is impossible if the records were authentic. All marksheets for the 2017–19 session were printed only in 2022, as the recruitment process began. SOG also uncovered that some candidates used backdated BPEd degrees from private universities in other states—Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat. Investigators suspect collusion between university staff and intermediaries to generate certificates on demand. The PTI recruitment timeline began with the exam announcement on June 16, 2022, applications from June 23 to July 22, the exam on Sept 25, results on Oct 21, and document verification from Dec 2 to 16.
