BNM revises 2025 GDP projection to 4.0-4.8%

KUALA LUMPUR — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has revised Malaysia's 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection to between 4.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent from 4.5 per cent – 5.5 per cent previously.
The projection takes into account various tariff scenarios, ranging from continued elevation of tariffs to more favourable trade negotiation outcomes.
In a statement today, the central bank said the forecast remains subject to uncertainties surrounding the global economy, both on the downside and the upside.
'Favourable trade negotiation outcomes, pro-growth policies in major economies, continued demand for electrical and electronic goods, and robust tourism activity could raise Malaysia's export and growth prospects,' it said.
Meanwhile, BNM Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said the Malaysian economy remains resilient despite global uncertainties, supported by the outcome of structural reforms undertaken over the years.
'The sustained strength in economic activity and moderate inflation provides a supportive environment to pursue structural reforms for a more resilient and competitive Malaysia in the future,' he said.
According to the central bank, headline inflation is projected to remain moderate, averaging between 1.5 and 2.3 per cent in 2025, reflecting the more moderate cost and demand outlook since March 2025.
'Inflationary pressure from global commodity prices is expected to remain limited, contributing to moderate domestic cost conditions. In this environment, the impact of domestic policy measures is expected to remain contained,' it said.
BNM noted that the global economic landscape has undergone considerable changes since the announcement of Malaysia's 2025 GDP growth forecast in Bank Negara Malaysia's Economic and Monetary Review in March 2025.
It said the global growth outlook is affected by shifting trade policies and uncertainties surrounding tariff developments, as well as geopolitical tensions.
'As a small open economy, Malaysia's growth prospects will be shaped by these developments. It is to Malaysia's advantage that our economy is facing these external headwinds from a position of strength.
'The latest indicators, including advanced estimates for the second quarter growth, continue to point towards sustained strength in economic activity. Domestic demand has been resilient and will continue to support growth going forward,' it said.
Favourable labour market conditions — particularly in domestic-oriented sectors — and policy measures will continue to underpin private consumption.
Meanwhile, BNM said expansion in investment activity will be sustained by progress in multi-year infrastructure projects, continued high realisation of approved investments and catalytic initiatives under the national development plans. — BERNAMA

Nine Malaysian firms make the cut in Forbes Asia's Best Under A Billion 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Malaysian companies have been included in Forbes Asia's Best Under a Billion 2025 list, which puts the spotlight on 200 Asia-Pacific companies with annual sales above USUS$10mil and below US$1bil. The nine Malaysian companies in this year's list are Able Global Bhd , Crescendo Corp Bhd , Frontken Corp Bhd , Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd , Hup Seng Industries Bhd , ITMax System Bhd , Kerjaya Prospek Group Bhd , Pekat Group Bhd and Scientex Bhd . There are fewer Malaysian companies on the list in 2025 as compared to the 11 that made it in 2024. Able Global was the only Malaysian company that appeared in both years. Malaysia's nine inclusions gives it the third-most representation on the list among countries in Southeast Asia, with only Thailand (17) and Indonesia (10) featuring more companies. "With trade tensions looming over the Asia-Pacific region, growth is predicted to continue to slow, according to the International Monetary Fund. "Despite these challenges, the annual Best Under A Billion list showcases businesses that remained resilient over the past year and, in many cases, thrived," said Forbes Asia in a statement. Forbes Asia added that the financial service sector saw 18 companies in the list, which was more than double the eight that appeared in the previous year. The beauty industry saw 13 companies - mostly from South Korea - included in the list. "Other companies in the region have benefited from the gathering momentum in the segments in which they operate, such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and data centres," it added. In total, 69 companies returned to the 2025 list from the previous year The companies on this unranked list were selected based on a composite score using measures such as debt, sales and earnings-per-share growth over both the most recent fiscal one- and three-year periods, and the strongest one- and five-year average returns on equity. Aside from quantitative criteria, qualitative screens were applied, such as excluding companies with serious governance issues, questionable accounting practices, environmental concerns, management problems or legal troubles in recent years. The list uses annual results based on the latest publicly available figures as of July 7, 2025.

Bleak outlook for media sector as Adex slumps

KUALA LUMPUR: The media sector is expected to remain weak in the second half of 2025, weighed down by ongoing structural challenges and subdued advertising expenditure (adex), said HLIB Research. The industry continues to struggle with the rapid decline of traditional media, while digital transformation efforts have delivered slow and uneven results. "Adex remains subdued, weighed down by cautious global sentiment and tighter corporate marketing budgets," it said in a note. "While monetisation of digital platforms is growing, it still lags the sharp decline in legacy revenue streams." Adex across all segments has been disappointing. Nielsen data showed total adex from January to May this year shrank 17 per cent compared to the same period last year, reflecting ongoing market weakness. Digital adex, once a bright spot, plunged 47 per cent, suggesting advertisers are cutting back across all platforms. Other media segments also suffered declines: free-to-air television adex fell by six per cent, newspapers by 12 per cent, magazines by 10 per cent, radio by 23 per cent and cinema by a staggering 50 per cent. "That said, there is potential for a modest uplift in the second half, supported by the upcoming Sabah state election by January 2026 and pre-promotional activities ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign," the firm said. While both Media Prima Bhd and Astro Malaysia Bhd have made digital investments through REV Media and digital content platforms respectively, HLIB Research said these initiatives have yet to translate into material gains. "The overall share of digital advertising captured by local players remains small compared to global tech giants like Meta, Google and TikTok. "These international platforms dominate digital ad spend due to their superior targeting capabilities and vast user bases, leaving Malaysian companies with limited bargaining power and thinner margins," it said. HLIB Research added that monetising digital content remains a challenge, especially in a market where consumers are reluctant to pay for online media.

DBKL plans 762,500 homes by 2040 under PTKL2040 plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aims to provide up to 762,500 housing units by 2040, in line with the direction of the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040), which focuses on the well-being of urban residents. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the housing stock as of 2020 stood at 500,803 units, comprising both open market housing and affordable housing. 'Over the next 15 years, new housing development will be planned based on the increasing number of residents and households in the capital. 'Housing planning will emphasise the needs of various groups, including youth, B40 and M40 families, senior citizens and other vulnerable communities,' she told Bernama. She said the plan also introduces the provision of micro and transit units for newly working youths, compact housing for dual-income, no-kids (DINK) couples and young professionals, as well as age-friendly housing for the elderly. Maimunah said DBKL has also allocated several specific land-use zones for housing, including Residential Zone 4 (R4), designated for affordable and public housing. She said PTKL2040 emphasises the principle of inclusive development by maintaining a balance between the need for housing, access to public transportation and environmental sustainability. She added that the housing target also takes into account the potential for redevelopment of existing areas and the provision of government land in strategic locations within the city. 'The pricing of affordable housing is subject to the National Affordable Housing Policy, with a maximum price set at RM300,000 per unit, in line with initiatives such as Residensi Wilayah. 'For the Residensi MADANI scheme, the maximum selling price is set at RM200,000 with a standard size of 800 square feet, while other units will be developed to meet the diverse needs of the urban community,' she said. Maimunah said PTKL2040 targets at least 40 per cent of all new housing units by 2040 to be affordable homes. The long-term plan also outlines the definition of affordable housing under two categories: rental units such as the People's Housing Project (PPR), Public Housing and Subsidised Rental Housing (PASS); and ownership units covering projects like Residensi Wilayah, Residensi MADANI, the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme (PPAM), PR1MA and One Staff Member One Home (SASaR). 'This initiative aims to ensure fair and sustainable access to housing for all segments of society, including low- and middle-income groups,' she said. - Bernama
