The link between PCOS and cardiovascular disease: What every woman should know
Beyond reproductive concerns, emerging research highlights a strong link between PCOS and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Women with PCOS often experience factors like high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction, which contribute to heart disease and stroke risk. Early awareness, lifestyle changes, and medical management are crucial to reducing these cardiovascular risks.
What is PCOS and how it increases cardiovascular risk in women
PCOS is characterised by hormonal imbalances that can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), and polycystic ovaries. Common symptoms include:
Irregular periods
Ovulatory dysfunction
Elevated androgen levels
Cystic ovaries
Beyond reproductive health, PCOS is linked to metabolic disturbances such as insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia, which can contribute to cardiovascular risk.
PCOS increases cardiovascular risk
1. Metabolic syndrome
Women with PCOS often exhibit components of metabolic syndrome, including:
Insulin resistance: Leading to elevated blood glucose levels.
Dyslipidemia: Characterized by high LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol.
Hypertension: Increased blood pressure levels.
These factors collectively elevate the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes .

2. Chronic inflammation
PCOS is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation, as evidenced by elevated levels of inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukins. This inflammatory state can accelerate the development of atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, leading to cardiovascular complications .
3. Endothelial dysfunction
The endothelium, the thin layer of cells lining blood vessels, plays a crucial role in vascular health.
Women with PCOS often exhibit endothelial dysfunction, characterized by reduced nitric oxide availability and impaired vasodilation. This dysfunction contributes to increased arterial stiffness and heightened cardiovascular risk .
4. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
OSA is more prevalent in women with PCOS compared to the general population. The intermittent cessation of breathing during sleep can lead to increased blood pressure and elevated sympathetic nervous system activity, further exacerbating cardiovascular risk .
Does weight matter?
While obesity can elevate the risk of PCOS and its complications, it's a myth that only overweight or obese women are affected. Even women with a healthy or lean body weight can experience insulin resistance, abnormal lipid profiles, and high blood pressure due to PCOS. This makes it essential to monitor cardiovascular health markers in all women with PCOS, regardless of their body size.
Preventive measures and management
1. Regular monitoring
Routine screening for cardiovascular risk factors is essential for women with PCOS. This includes:
Monitoring blood pressure
Assessing lipid profiles
Evaluating glucose tolerance
2. Lifestyle modifications
Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can mitigate cardiovascular risk:
Diet: Emphasize a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is particularly beneficial for managing blood pressure.
Physical activity: Engage in regular aerobic exercises to improve cardiovascular health and manage weight.
Weight management: Achieve and maintain a healthy weight to reduce insulin resistance and improve lipid profiles.
3. Pharmacological interventions
In some cases, medications may be prescribed to manage cardiovascular risk factors.
4. Sleep apnea management
For women with PCOS diagnosed with OSA, appropriate interventions like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy can improve sleep quality and reduce cardiovascular strain.

Govt planning to set up organ retrieval centres at MCHs
Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt has decided to set up non-transplant organ retrieval centres at medical colleges and hospitals (MCH)s, Umakant Satapathy, nodal officer for organ transplant and additional director of medical education and training (DMET), said on Monday. Among state-run hospitals, only SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, has this facility. "After the brain stem death of a person, a team from SCB will visit the MCH immediately, and with the help of the concerned MCH doctors, organs will be retrieved from the brain-dead patient. Later, they can be transplanted at SCB and other hospitals. The organ retrieval centres will immensely help us to get organs from deceased donors," Satapathy said. He said the govt is prepared to start heart transplant at SCB soon. "This type of transplantation is not a scheduled event like a planned surgery. Screening for heart transplantation is ongoing. We will conduct the transplant whenever we get a deceased donor and an eligible receiver," he added. The govt signed an MoU with a Chennai-based hospital on Oct 23 last year to start heart transplant at SCB. The Chennai-based healthcare institution has provided training to five doctors, two perfusionists and two nursing officers to make the heart transplant unit of the hospital functional. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Great for My Business [Explore] SearchPad Learn More Undo "The private agency will conduct the first 10 transplants for free as per the agreement," Satapathy said. On July 31, Orissa high court had directed the govt to take urgent steps to resume liver transplant at SCB, which was stopped in April following the expiry of the MoU with a Hyderabad-based institute. The court also sought a report from the govt regarding proper functioning of bone marrow transplant (BMT) procedures. Satapathy said the govt will follow the high court order and soon resume liver transplant at SCB. "The earlier agency from Hyderabad, whose agreement ended a few months ago, is not showing interest in another MoU to continue the liver transplant activities at SCB. The govt is exploring other ways, like roping in an experienced hospital in Chennai, to resume the transplant work," he added. Telangana high court seeks action plans on Kaleshwaram safety
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Tuesday issued key directions to the state govt on three separate public interest litigations concerning public safety, welfare, and infrastructure. A bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin directed the state to submit, within two weeks, details of measures being taken to safeguard the Kaleshwaram irrigation project and protect people from potential flood-related disasters during the ongoing monsoon. The bench was hearing a 2020 PIL filed by Cheruku Sudhakar and another petitioner, initially focused on remedial measures under the Disaster Management Act during the heavy rains and floods of that year. Counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar recently filed a memo seeking similar safeguards for Kaleshwaram, citing the National Dam Safety Authority's report and earlier court directives. The petitioners expressed concern that low-lying areas downstream face imminent risk. The case will be reviewed on Aug 28. The bench fixed Sept 3 to review the compliance status. OGH relocation dispute The high court also asked the state govt to file a detailed report on its decision to relocate Osmania General Hospital (OGH) to Goshamahal Stadium. The petition, filed by local resident G Ramu, contended that the stadium land is reserved for sports and cannot be repurposed. Counsel argued that GO 45, transferring the land to the medical and health department, was issued without considering public objections. Advocate general A Sudarshan Reddy informed the court that the transfer process was complete and a nearby govt school had been relocated to accommodate the move. The bench granted one week to file a counter affidavit and posted the matter to Sept 26, directing that the report be submitted before that date.
