Amit Shah offers puja at Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu's Madurai
Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered puja at the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu's Madurai on Sunday.
In a post on X, Shah said, 'Fortunate to have offered puja at the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai today. Prayed, seeking the blessings of the Maa for the continued progress of the nation and well-being of our citizens.'
Shah arrived in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, late Saturday evening. The state BJP leadership, including BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP Tamil Nadu President Nainar Nagendran, received him.
Highlighting the NDA government's efforts to redefine women-led development in the last 11 years, Shah said that empowered women are the foundation of Aatmnirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
In a post on X, Shah wrote, 'Empowered women are the foundation of a self-reliant India. For the Modi government, nothing is more important than mother and motherland. In #11YearsOfSashaktNari , the Modi government has given a new boost to the spirits of women by making them self-reliant. From 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' to toilets, Ujjwala, ban on triple talaq, their dignity and 'Nari Shakti Vandan Act' and recruitment in armed forces are ensuring their historic participation in nation-building.'
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that various government initiatives are intended to empower the country's 'Nari Shakti.'
In a post on X, PM Modi said that women are excelling and inspiring several people in all sectors, including science, education, sports, StartUps and the armed forces.
'Over the last 11 years, the NDA Government has redefined women-led development. Various initiatives, from ensuring dignity through Swachh Bharat to financial inclusion via Jan Dhan accounts, the focus has been on empowering our Nari Shakti,' PM Modi said.
'In all sectors, including science, education, sports, start-ups, and the armed forces, women excel and inspire several people,' the prime minister said.
PM Modi highlighted the key schemes launched by his government, such as Ujjwala Yojana and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
'Ujjwala Yojana brought smoke-free kitchens to several homes. MUDRA loans enabled lakhs of women entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams on their own terms. Houses under the women's name in the PM Awas Yojana too have made a remarkable impact. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao ignited a national movement to protect the girl child,' he said. (ANI)

Amid buzz over Jayant Patil's exit, fresh NCP(SP) faces join race to replace him
At the 26th foundation day celebrations of his party Tuesday, Maharashtra NCP(SP) president Jayant Patil created a stir as he offered to resign from his post for the second time within a year claiming 'the opportunity to lead the party should be given to a new face'. Even as Patil's statement saw an uproar from party workers, unlike last time, it has triggered speculations about his successor and possible exit from the NCP(SP) after the party's patriarch Sharad Pawar indicated that it would 'look for new faces to lead'. In his address, Pawar did not insist that Patil continue in his post and also did not praise his leadership, merely saying, 'I will sit and discuss the issue (of electing a new state president) with prominent leaders of the party. We will take a collective decision. We want to ensure that a new face leads the party in every district and taluka. We will work to create a new generation of party workers and leaders across the state.' Pawar's comments have led a section of NCP(SP) leaders to believe that Patil may not stay in the party if he steps down. 'The doors of the BJP are open for him (Jayant Patil). Evidence to this is Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's frequent praise of Patil on the floor of the Assembly. He may join the BJP or the (Ajit Pawar-led) NCP,' an NCP(SP) leader said on the condition of anonymity. However, veteran NCP leader Ankush Kakde, who is seen to be close to Sharad Pawar, claimed there was 'no immediate worry about leadership'. 'I think Patil will be at the helm till the (upcoming) civic polls,' he said. Meanwhile, Pawar's announcement has put the spotlight on the NCP(SP)'s young leaders like former ministers Jitendra Awhad, Rajesh Tope and Shashikant Shinde, Lok Sabha MP Amol Kolhe and Pawar's grandnephew Rohit Pawar, who are seen to be in the running to replace Patil. Key contenders Rohit and Patil have had strained ties. In June last year, at the party's foundation day event, Rohit was the first leader to target Patil over issues concerning the party's functioning. While reprimanding Rohit for raking up such issues publicly, Patil had then offered to quit as state president, saying he would remain in the post only till the Assembly elections (held in November 2024). However, Rohit offered an olive branch and said he had no intention to lead the party and subsequently 'praised' Patil's work. Though this time there are hardly any dissenting voices against Patil, sources said one of the key reasons for him offering to quit his post are the number of Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases against him, like the one over his alleged involvement in the IF&FS scam. Since the ED's summons to Patil in 2023, the IF&FS case has not moved forward. Sources in the BJP said that 'Patil's amicable relations with Fadnavis have worked to his advantage'. Awhad, on the other hand, is seen to be close to Pawar Senior as well as Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Pawar's daughter. Seen as strong voice which takes on the ruling Mahayuti strongly over various issues, the OBC leader is seen to have made a place for himself among the Maratha community for his attacks on former minister Dhananjay Munde and his supporters over the murder of Massajog sarpanch Sanjay Deshmukh. Another frontrunner in the reckoning to replace Patil, Shashikant Shinde is an MLC, who had been an MLA from Satara district several times. He lost narrowly to the BJP's Udayanraje Bhosale from the Satara Lok Sabha seat in last year's polls. Tope, who hails from Jalna and had drawn praise for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic as state health minister in the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, has a clean image. Sule in the running? Even as sources said Sule was only keen to take over the reins of the NCP(SP) at the national level if Pawar Senior decides to step away, a section of the party believes she should take over the mantle from Patil. 'Pawar saheb is our national leader and Sule should take charge of Maharashtra, a key state for the party… She is a capable leader who has proved her credentials. Recently, she even represented the country abroad (as the head of one of the multi-party delegations for global outreach on Operation Sindoor) and drew accolades. Congress's Revanth Reddy has praise for this old RSS hand: Who is ‘Ajatshatru' Bandaru Dattatreya
At an event held last Sunday in Hyderabad to launch Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography, 'Prajala kathe, naa atma katha' (The story of people is my life story), Telangana Chief Minister and Congress leader A Revanth Reddy called Dattatreya an 'Ajatashatru' (one who has no enemies), saying he has been a leader who commands bipartisan respect much like former Prime Minister late Atal Bihar Vajpayee did. Similar sentiments were expressed on the occasion by several dignitaries and leaders cutting across party lines, including ex-President Ram Nath Kovind, former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, with Kovind describing Dattatreya as a 'rare leader' who has been a 'friend to all'. The 77-year-old Other Backward Class (OBC) leader, Dattatreya, who hails from Hyderabad, started his public life in 1965 when he joined the RSS, the BJP's ideological fountainhead. He was appointed as an RSS pracharak in 1968. He continued to hold various positions within the Sangh and its affiliated outfits till 1979, when he was Seva Bharati's pramukh, before joining the BJP. 'Dattatreya had been one of the BJP leaders since its inception. In 1980, he was posted as the BJP secretary in undivided Andhra Pradesh,' one of his close aides told The Indian Express. In Hyderabad, Dattatreya was known as a BJP leader who used to attend even the smallest of public functions. 'It was not easy to work as a BJP leader then and get the support of people who belonged to various parties back in the 1980s. He undertook this connect with people like a personal mission and succeeded in it to the surprise of many,' a Congress leader said. Dattatreya held different positions in the Andhra Pradesh BJP, including its general secretary from 1981 to 1989. In 1991, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time from the Secunderabad constituency (in Telangana now). He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha four times from Secunderabad from 1991 to 2014, even though he also suffered losses a few times. 'It was not easy to win over such a long period in Secunderabad as a BJP candidate then. It showed the public trust he enjoyed over the years,' Dattatreya's aide said. The BJP first named Dattatreya as the Andhra Pradesh party unit president in 1996. He again served as the state party chief from 2006 to 2009. Besides, he also played various roles in the party at the central level – from being the party's national secretary to its national executive member and national vice president. He also served as the Union minister of state (MoS) in the governments led by both Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. In the Modi ministry 1.0, he was the MoS (independent charge) of labour and employment from November 2014 to September 2017. During this period he worked closely with various labour unions in the country for the welfare and uplift of workers in both organised and unorganised sectors, his aide said. In his autobiography, Dattatreya states, 'One of the significant strides made during my tenure (as MoS, labour) in 2015 was the substantial increase in minimum wages across both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.' In 2014, he also served as the chairperson of the parliamentary committee on welfare of the backward classes. A political observer close to Dattatreya told The Indian Express that his elevation in the BJP ranks could be attributed to his proximity to the RSS. 'His rise in the BJP was completely driven by his deep-rooted connection to the RSS. Without the RSS' backing Dattatreya would not have made it to the Union MoS's position'. In his long political innings, Dattatreya has however also faced several controversies. He was booked as one of the prime accused in a case of abetment of suicide of University of Hyderabad (UoH)'s PhD scholar Rohith Vemula. Months before Vemula's death by suicide in January 2016, Dattatreya was accused of having written a letter to then Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani to seek action against some UoH students including Vemula for their alleged 'casteist, extremist and anti-national' activities. Vemula, who identified as a Dalit, had written a suicide note in which he said, 'My birth is my fatal accident', which found resonance across the country as a searing indictment of the country's caste reality. The Hyderabad police however filed a closure report in the case in 2024, claiming that Vemula was not a Dalit and that 'external pressures' did not lead to his suicide. It gave a clean chit to Dattatreya and other accused. Vemula's suicide sparked nationwide protests against the discrimination of Dalit students in educational institutions. Dattatreya had denied any wrongdoing in the matter. 'The BJP did not remove him from his MoS position during this entire episode,' noted a student leader from the UoH. In the Modi government 2.0, Dattatreya was sent to Himachal Pradesh as the Governor. In 2021, he was named the Haryana Governor, a post that he still holds.
