Arsenal target Eberechi Eze has left Germany stars red-faced after Jack Grealish transfer
Eberechi Eze has had the last laugh over his German doubters, who felt he couldn't pose the same threat as Jack Grealish. That's amid rumours the Crystal Palace talisman is currently wanted by Arsenal and Tottenham, while Grealish has just left Manchester City to join Everton on loan.
Given their current career trajectories, there can be little doubt as to who is the hotter talent at present. This proves that certain figures within the Germany camp were wrong in their judgment of the two wingers last year.
It all stems back to Euro 2024, where former England boss Gareth Southgate opted to include Eze in his squad over Grealish. Eze, 27, was still on the ascendancy at Selhurst Park at the time, while Grealish had started to slip down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola.
Reports soon emerged regarding the reaction to those decisions within the Germany camp. And Die Mannschaft appeared largely at ease over the selection, given Grealish was rated as the superior asset.
Sources from within the squad suggested the Germans felt Grealish was someone who "provokes fear in opposition when he runs at them." They allegedly didn't feel as threatened by Palace star Eze, a lesser-known name at a much smaller club.
Fast forward to today, and Eze is a man in demand, with The Guardian reporting Tottenham have opened talks to sign the player. However, it's mentioned the player, who has a £68million release clause valid until Friday, would prefer a move to north London nemesis Arsenal.
Eze, who finished last season with 14 goals and 11 assists, was already on the rise when Southgate rewarded him with a spot in the Euro 2024 squad. And although the 12-cap international played just 100 minutes en route to a runner-up finish in the tournament, his star has soared even higher since then.
The former Millwall and QPR star was a key component in the Palace side that won the FA Cup last season. He also helped spearhead the Eagles' charge to an upset win over Liverpool in Saturday's Community Shield clash at Wembley.
Grealish, on the other hand, has accepted a step down after joining the Toffees on temporary terms. The winger made just 16 starts in all competitions under Guardiola last term and has signalled his intent to earn more regular minutes on Merseyside.
Grealish has earned 39 caps for his country to date, but it's been almost one year since he last turned out for England. The 29-year-old has been omitted from the last three international squads and is yet to make an appearance under Thomas Tuchel, who took over at the start of the year.
Eze, meanwhile, has been named in each of Tuchel's selections and scored in his maiden game under the new boss, a 3-0 win over Latvia. And he'll hope to retain his place in the squad ahead of next month's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Andorra (Sept. 6) and Serbia (Sept. 9)

Man Utd using critics to fuel their bid to hit the ground running
All eyes will be on Old Trafford this Sunday as the rebuilding Red Devils welcome Arsenal in the most eye-catching Premier League clash of the opening weekend. United came 15th last term – their worst top-flight finish in 51 years – and lost the Europa League final to put the lid on a miserable and financially-damaging campaign. Mount knows the team 'need to repay' United's fans, who appear to be heading into Sunday's game with a sense of optimism following a positive summer and some impressive recruits. Mason Mount tasted defeat in the Europa League final (Nick Potts/PA) 'It's a clean slate and we're so excited to be able to have that opportunity,' the midfielder said. 'A lot of people have said a lot of stuff about us as a group, and we ball that up and we use that energy in the best way we can, and that's on the football pitch against other teams, and really competing and fighting for those three points.' Mount says the players 'want to put it right' and are relishing the chance to take on last season's Premier League runners-up this weekend. 'Every game that we'll be playing will have that kind of focus to be able to perform and really kick on, and put what was wrong right this season coming,' he told Inside United. 'Every game is going to be a massive focus to keep that performance level really high and the details really high. 'To start off with that game, it doesn't get much better than that.' United have been boosted ahead of the opener by last weekend's arrival of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a deal worth up to £73.7million. Whether the 22-year-old is ready to start against Arsenal remains to be seen, but he adds energy, and goals, along with fellow big-name summer arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. 'I think for us it's so important to start well, to start quick, to start with that intensity,' Mount said. 'We're a team that definitely can push with that and win games with that intensity and the way we want to press, the way we want to move the ball and dominate the ball, and create chances. 'That's the way the manager wants to play, so it's exciting for us to see what we're doing in training and put that into the games. 'I think to start with that game (against Arsenal) is going to be massive for us, to start on the front foot and really push forward.'

Joao Palhinha predicts ‘something special' from Spurs despite Super Cup defeat
Spurs were minutes away from winning a second trophy in the space of three months after goals by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero either side of half-time put them in control in Udine. PSG upped the ante in the second period and, after Lee Kang-in reduced the deficit with five minutes left, fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time after a 2-2 draw. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank passes the trophy during the medal ceremony (Antonio Calanni/AP) Vitinha's miss coupled with successful kicks by Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur put Thomas Frank's team two up in the shootout, but Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to score from the spot and the French side claimed further silverware with a 4-3 victory. Palhinha was eager to draw on the positives ahead of Tottenham being set to return to Champions League action next month for the first time in three seasons. 'It is football. At the end we are really sad. Not just the players but all the staff, all the crowd that came to support us during the game,' Palhinha said. 'I think we also need to feel proud for what we did until the 80 minutes. You know because we fought all the games with a top team and I think we showed what we are here to get in the future. 'We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special. 'I think we have the hunger from all the players to achieve this title. Everyone gave all the maximum in this game and I think we showed what we are capable of. 'We played against a top team and I think we have everything, a top coach, top players in this squad, a top crowd with a lot of hunger to achieve titles and me and my team-mates will fight for it, for sure. 'A tough night, but I know that we will shape good things in the future. We just need to keep our head up.' This was Palhinha's competitive debut for Spurs after he joined on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich. Palhinha struggled during his debut campaign in Munich, but is excited to be back in the Premier League and London following two successful years at Fulham before Tottenham's opener at home to Burnley on Saturday. He said: 'In the Premier League you have also every single week top games. I think we cannot relax and the good thing now is we have another game on Saturday to change the (bad) things and start with the right foot in the Premier League. 'I enjoyed when I played in Fulham the two years that I was there. I really miss the Premier League. I think it's a league that everyone plays and when you play there and go to play outside somewhere else, you miss something. 'I'm really proud to be back again to the Premier League. I'm really happy to be in this top club and top team. I just need to enjoy it.' Proud. There's plenty more to come 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 13, 2025 Mohammed Kudus also made his debut for Tottenham and backed them to learn lessons from the defeat. 'We've shown that we can compete at the highest level, we have to take the positives and focus on the tasks we have ahead in the coming season,' Kudus insisted. 'This is a good step, of course a big disappointment but we have a lot more to play this season, a lot more competitions and we take this as a lesson and move forward.'
