Strawberry says MLB needs to focus on developing and marketing the game within the inner cities

NEW YORK (AP) — Darryl Strawberry says Major League Baseball needs to focus on developing and marketing the game within the inner cities in order for the percentage of Black players to rise substantially.
'They have academies everywhere else, but they don't have the attraction for what inner cities are all about,' Strawberry said Thursday at Citi Field prior to what the New York Mets marketed as their 'Black Legacy Game' against the St. Louis Cardinals. 'That's where we played — me and Eric Davis, Chris Brown, all of us came from the inner city and inner city baseball was organized.'

Strawberry, Davis and Brown all grew up in the Los Angeles area and made big league debuts in 1983 and 1984.
'They don't have those anymore. Those parks are closed down. Those parks are soccer fields. They're not baseball fields anymore,' Strawberry said.
Black players comprised 6.2% of the opening-day rosters this season — up from 6% last season and down 18% from 1991, the first year The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at Central Florida conducted its annual study.
MLB has attempted to generate interest among Black high schoolers with the DREAM Series, which it runs in conjunction with USA Baseball. The Series began in 2017, when one of the high schoolers in attendance was current Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene.

Strawberry said MLB should increase marketing to attract Black athletes who might otherwise play basketball or football. Strawberry's sons D.J. and Jordan were 1,000-point scorers, D.J. at Maryland and Jordan at Mercer. Jordan Strawberry accompanied his father to Citi Field.
'The younger African-American kids kind of reject baseball because they don't market it like they do basketball,' Darryl Strawberry said, 'Basketball markets their players, they market their jersey, they market their tennis shoes and that's what gets kids attracted to.
'My son Jordan's with me. He grew up playing basketball. He was a good baseball player. I wish he'd picked up a bat and kept going. The marketing of basketball was so attractive and it just draws players to that. So you have to make the game attractive to draw players to it.'

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues are bringing in 37-year-old forward Milan Lucic, who last played in 2023, for a tryout. Lucic was a member of the Boston Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup championship team who also played for the Kings, Oilers and Flames before returning to the Bruins in 2023. He had two assists in four games that year before he took a puck off his ankle and went on long-term injured reserve. Three weeks later, police were called to Lucic's home by his wife, who told them he pulled her hair and tried to choke her. He was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery on a family member, but the charges were dropped when his wife declined to testify in court. Lucic entered the league's Player Assistance Program. The Blues say he has completed the program and has been reinstated by the NHL. Lucic has 233 goals, 353 assists and 1,301 penalty minutes in 17 NHL seasons. He had a career-high 32 goals with 30 assists in 2010-11 and assisted on the overtime winner in Game 7 of the first-round series against the Montreal Canadiens to help the Bruins win their most recent Stanley Cup title. ___

There is a built-in audience and the marketing folks can simply feed off the brilliant promotions and events that the Great West League team has created. A natural spot. Honorary ambassador: Dillon the Pickles' mascot gets called to the bigs. Odds: 9 of 10 Charlotte/Raleigh, North Carolina Charlotte and its nearby cities have become a sports hotbed. Football, baseball, hockey all are thriving in this North Carolina city. It is a strong fit to add a baseball franchise to a city that is growing and continues to create a sports buzz. Honorary Ambassador, former Minor League Baseball player Michael Jordan. Odds: 8 of 10 Salt Lake City, Utah Salt Lake City has picked up sports steam by adding an NHL franchise to go with the Jazz. While it doesn't seem to be a destination the NFL would be interested in, this sports hotbed would be a great spot to add an MLB team. Honorary, Ambassador: Danny Ainge Odds: 7 of 10 Austin, Texas The folks in Austin lover their sports. While it would be difficult to compete with the Longhorns' football team, there is plenty of room and time to avoid going head-to-head with the handful of Saturdays UT is home. The Texas baseball team is also beloved. Honorary, Ambassador: Any recruit UT wants as part of an NIL deal. Odds: 5 of 10 San Antonio, Texas Texas is big enough for three MLB teams. So, if it comes down to Austin or San Antonio, it could be a tough choice. San Antonio has a larger population by around 600,000. It also isn't dependent on a student body that will comes and go during the summer. Honorary, Ambassador: Victor Wembanyama. Odds: 8 out of 10 Boise, Idaho Boise already has Blitz the T dog, who could add bat dog to his roles. Imagine how cool it would be if the folks in Boise decided to keep the theme and play on a blue field. MLB would probably recoil at the idea. Honorary, ambassador: Rich Hill, who began his career with the Boise Hawks. He probably still will be pitching when these franchises begin. Odds: 2 of 10 New England Metro, Mass./R.I. Put another team in Boston and base it around Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. That is a sound plan and given how devoted the folks in Boston are to their teams a love affair would quickly start. Honorary, ambassador: Green Day alternate band the Foxboro Hot Tubs Odds: 4 of 10 Vancouver, Canada If Portland isn't chosen, the Northwest could handle another team.
