"Free electricty for all Kanwar camps": Delhi Minister Ashish Sood
New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Delhi Minister Ashish Sood on Tuesday said that the state government has announced free electricity for all Kanwar camps so that they don't face inconvenience. He added that the government would ensure security arrangements for them.
'For a long time, Kanwar committees have been demanding better arrangements for them... We have announced free electricity for all Kanwar camps in Delhi for the convenience of all lord Shiva devotees. These Kanwar camps will receive free electricity... Along with free electricity, robust security arrangements will also be made for them,' Sood told reporters here
As the national capital gears up for the Kanwar yatra, the Delhi cabinet has decided that Kanwar committees will be getting funds directly from the Delhi government through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced today.
CM Gupta also slammed the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for alleged corruption in giving funds for the yatra, claiming that there had been numerous complaints from the committees about facilities not being ready for them.
'In the name of giving services to all the Kanwar Yatris, the previous government has made this work the spot of corruption. Only 2-3 people used to take the tender for the whole of Delhi. Committees of Kanwar Yatris told us that till the last day, tents were not put up... We have decided that all the Kanwar committees will get funds through direct benefit transfer from the Delhi government,' CM Gupta said during a press conference here.
On June 17, the Chief Minister convened a high-level review meeting to discuss the preparations for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra 2025, focusing on planning, arrangements, and facilities for the devotees during the yatra.
In a post on X, the Delhi Chief Minister's Office (CMO) stated that the meeting was held with the focus on ensuring a seamless and respectful experience for the lakhs of Shiv bhakts expected to participate.
Gupta directed that every devotee should receive respect, facilities, and security, emphasising that the event is not only a festival of faith but also an opportunity for service and dedication.
'The Chief Minister directed that it should be ensured that every Shiv devotee gets respect, facilities and security. She said that Kanwar Yatra is not only a festival of faith but also an opportunity for service and dedication. The Delhi government will ensure its organisation with devotion, arrangements and sensitivity,' the CMO's statement read.
Following the meeting, the Delhi CM detailed the setup of Kanwar camps across Delhi, with a focus on improving the infrastructure and services compared to previous years under the AAP government. She noted that the camps are scheduled to operate from July until Sawan Shivratri.
In the Kanwar Yatra procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, Parshuram, a devotee of Shiva and Lord Vishnu's avatar participated in the initial procession. Devotees across the country perform worship, fasting and pilgrimage dedicated to the Lord Shiva. (ANI)

Jorhat (Assam) [India], June 25 (ANI): The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict has severely disrupted India's Orthodox tea exports, particularly disrupting business from Assam, the country's largest producer of Orthodox tea. Iran, a key buyer of Indian Orthodox tea imports nearly 28 million kilos annually, of which around 24 million kilos are sourced from Assam. With Assam producing roughly 85 million kilos of Orthodox tea each year, this disruption has jeopardised a significant portion of the state's exports. Indian Orthodox tea refers to tea processed using the traditional method, which involves hand-plucking, withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying. Exporters report major delays and complications in both shipments and payment settlements since the war began. These disruptions have triggered a steep fall in Orthodox tea prices at recent auctions, causing deep concern among tea growers and manufacturers, especially in Assam. According to observers, what's raising eyebrows within the industry is that Sri Lanka -- another major supplier of Orthodox tea to Iran -- has not seen a similar sharp market decline. Industry experts suggest this may be because Sri Lankan exporters are not exploiting the crisis, or the Sri Lankan government is actively stepping in to stabilise the sector. While the current turmoil is expected to be temporary, the uncertainty is putting immense pressure on Orthodox tea producers. Stakeholders are hopeful that once the conflict subsides, exports will resume and payment channels will normalise. Until then, manufacturers -- particularly in Assam -- are left grappling with mounting losses and market instability. Industry bodies are urging the central government to provide immediate relief and take policy-level steps to support the tea sector during this volatile period. Talking to ANI, Prabhat Bezbaruah, former Chairman of the Tea Board and Toklai Tea Research Institute, said, 'Mainly, Orthodox tea exports have been hit because Iran is a large market for Orthodox teas -- about 28 million kilos of Indian Orthodox tea are exported to Iran.' 'There has been a disruption in shipments as well as in payments. As a result, the prices of Orthodox tea have dropped significantly in the last auction. This is quite surprising because Sri Lanka is also a major exporter of Orthodox tea to Iran, yet the Sri Lankan market has not reacted to the same extent,' he added. New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Claiming India has been going through an 'undeclared emergency' for the past 11 years, Congress leader Manickam Tagore on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janta Party, accusing it of trying to destroy Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy by attacking the Constitution. 'The Constitution is under attack. In 2024, Modi asked for a Char Sau Paar mandate to change the Constitution. He wanted to destroy Ambedkar's legacy - and the people rejected him. But the BJP continues to undermine democracy by stealth,' Tagore wrote in a post on X. Criticising the functioning of the parliament, he highlighted the suspension of 146 MPs in 2023, a record number of suspensions which occurred during the Parliament winter session, claiming that the 'temple of democracy' has become a 'dictatorship theatre.' 'Parliament has been reduced to a farce; 146 MPs suspended in one session - a world record; Laws passed in 5 minutes; Zero accountability; Budget presented without debate; India's temple of democracy has become a dictatorship's theatre,' the post claimed. These remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. On 25 June 1975, then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. BJP's Pradeep Bhandari criticises Congress for not officially apologising for imposing Emergency
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): As India marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Bharatiya Janata Party is observing the 50 years of the imposition of Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' 2025. Commenting on the occasion, BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari sharply criticised the Congress party and said, 'Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, and till today the Congress party has not officially apologised for imposing the Emergency in the country.' He further added that if the Gandhi-Vadra family had even an ounce of constitutional morality, they would have apologised five decades ago. Bhandari did not forget to take a dig at Rahul Gandhi who often carries a copy of the Constitution, said, 'Those who travel with a copy of the Constitution these days belong to the same family that jailed over one lakh citizens during the Emergency, and snatched away the right to life guaranteed under Article 21'. He reminded that the Constitution was effectively suspended, democracy dismantled, and the fundamental rights of Indian citizens were stripped, all for the sake of clinging to power. He recounted the horror during the Emergency and how more than 30 lakh poor were forcefully sterilised, more than 250 journalists were imprisoned, and freedom of expression was crushed. He also mentioned the controversial MISA Act (The Maintenance of Internal Security Act) under which lakhs of people, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vijay Deshmukh, Jaiprakash Narayan, along with several leaders of the opposition, were put behind bars. He called this act similar to the colonial-era laws used by the British to imprison Indian freedom fighters. MISA was a controversial act passed in 1971. It gave the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's administration expansive powers, such as indefinite preventive detention of individuals. The Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, following a recommendation made to the President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, under Article 352 of the Constitution. It suspended elections, curtailed civil liberties, and granted sweeping powers to the central government, lasting until March 21, 1977. The period is widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democratic history. (ANI)
