Amid Trump tariff threat, PM Modi pledges to protect farmers, MSMEs & youth

Time of India19 hours ago
VARANASI: Amid the tariff stalemate with the USA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sent a strong message to the world that protecting India's economic interest was paramount.
Speaking in his parliamentary constituency on Saturday, the PM emphasised that the "top priority of the government remains the welfare of farmers, small industries and employment for youth." He reaffirmed the resilience of the Indian economy, saying that the country must remain vigilant about its economic interests and adopt 'swadeshi' products.
"There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests.
India is going to become the third biggest economy in the world and this is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned," the PM said, two days after UP President Donald Trump called India a 'dead economy'. CM Yogi Adityanath and two deputy CMs, Keshav Maurya and Brajesh Pathak were present on the occasion.
Addressing a public gathering at Kalikadham in Sevapuri after transferring Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore farmers as the 20th installment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme and inaugurating and laying the foundation of 52 projects worth around Rs 2,200 crore, the PM urged people to go 'Vocal for Local'.

"Anyone who wishes good for the country and wants to see India become the third-largest economy must encourage this spirit of going local," he said.
The PM urged traders to promote 'swadeshi' products, terming it a true national service, and appealed to citizens to use Indian-made goods during the upcoming festivals and wedding seasons.
He also advised people to hold weddings in India instead of abroad, highlighting that many young people were already doing so.
"Every choice we make in favour of 'Swadeshi' will shape the future of the country. With everyone's effort, the dream of a developed India will come true. From now on, let's pledge to buy and decorate our homes with only Indian-made products," he added.
Modi highlighted his government's farmer-centric policies, stating that unlike previous governments, the BJP administration has fulfilled its promises to farmers, citing the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi as a prime example.
"When this scheme was launched, opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party and Congress left no stone unturned to mislead farmers by claiming that after the 2019 Lok Sabha election, it would be stopped and even the money transferred into the accounts of farmers would be taken back.
However, Rs 3.75 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers' accounts so far," he said.
In UP alone, 2.5 crore farmers have received over Rs 90,000 crore, while farmers from Kashi got Rs 900 crore, he added.
Referring to the transparency maintained in the schemes of his govt, Modi said, "There are no cuts, commissions, or middlemen. We created a permanent system where there's no leakage and no one can steal the rights of the poor."
Prime Minister Modi emphasized developing the most backward regions with his mantra of 'High priority to more backward'. He highlighted the newly approved PM Dhan Dhanya Agriculture Scheme, focusing on underdeveloped districts with low crop production and income.
He said the govt will invest Rs 24,000 crore in this scheme to support farmers from 'lab to field' and 'seed to market' for their products. Massive investments are being made in irrigation, and under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, over Rs 1.75 lakh crore in claims were already paid out to farmers.
Modi also mentioned a record increase in the MSP for farmers. Emphasising the govt's focus on boosting women's participation in agriculture through initiatives like Lakhpati Didi and Drone Didi, he stated that the aim is to empower 3 crore rural women financially, with over 1.5 crore already becoming Lakhpati Didis.
Taking a subtle dig at the opposition, the PM said: "Hearing these numbers, SP leaders might just hop on their cycles and run away.
"
Despite agriculture being a state subject, the Centre has taken proactive steps to enhance farmers' income and living standards by implementing beneficial schemes, PM Modi said.
He praised banks for launching a mega campaign and holding fairs in villages across the country for KYC renewal of the account holders under the Jan-Dhan scheme on the completion of its 10 years of launching.
Modi also marked the distribution of assistive devices under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana to 2,000 Divyangs by handing over devices, including low vision glasses to Babli Kumari (visually impaired student), sports wheelchairs to Santosh Kumar Pandey and Vikas Kumar Patel, hearing aids to Kishun, and a motorized tricycle to Sita Kumari Pal (teacher).
Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan joined the event virtually from Patna.

US tariff impact on commodities: Copper plunges nearly 2 pc, gold rebounds

Commodity prices witnessed sharp swings last week, with base metal copper dropping nearly 2 per cent while gold gained over 1 per cent after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on most Indian goods. Fresh tariff announcements by Trump fanned fears of a global trade war, leading to a rout in base metals while safe-haven demand lifted precious metal gold last week, analysts said. They said the unexpected US tariff structure, especially on semi-finished copper goods, sent shockwaves across global commodity markets, with copper prices tumbling sharply and crude oil showing mixed trends amid geopolitical concerns. --Copper crashes as US slaps tariffs on semi-finished imports-- Copper was the worst-hit among base metals as the Trump administration imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on imports of semi-finished copper goods such as wires, tubes and rods. The new duties will come into force from August 7. However, refined copper, ores, and cathodes were excluded from the levy, creating uncertainty in global supply chains. On MCX, the August contract of copper fell by Rs 16.35 or 1.82 per cent last week. On July 31, copper prices dropped by Rs 36 or 4 per cent to hit an all-time low of Rs 861.70 per kg. On COMEX, copper prices initially fell nearly 22 per cent from peak levels before rebounding by 1.79 per cent to close at USD 4.45 per pound. LME Copper futures ended the week up 0.31 per cent at USD 9,639.60 per tonne. "President Trump's tariff announcements have sent shockwaves across global commodity markets, particularly metals. The US imposed a 50 per cent tariff on semi-finished copper products, a 25 per cent levy on Indian imports, and additional trade penalties related to Russian energy transactions," Riya Singh - Research Analyst, Commodities and Currency, Emkay Global Financial Services, said. "MCX copper prices dropped from Rs 900 to Rs 861 in just three sessions before stabilising. The exclusion of raw forms like cathodes from the tariff list has led to confusion in price discovery," Singh added. She noted that traders exited long positions aggressively, leading to the largest weekly outflow in over a year and adding that "India imported over USD 1.4 billion worth of refined and semi-refined copper in FY24. With the US market restricted, these goods may be diverted to India, risking margin pressure for local fabricators". According to Heena Naik, Research Analyst - Commodities, Angel One, the US administration initially hinted at wide-ranging copper tariffs, causing a rush of shipments into the US ahead of the August 1 deadline. "Now, with refined copper excluded from the tariff list, there are concerns of re-exports and a potential oversupply. The sudden narrowing of the tariff scope has disrupted the global copper supply chain," she said. Naik also highlighted China's indirect exposure, being the world's top producer of copper products, and added that base metals broadly fell over 1.5 per cent last week amid weak demand and tariff headwinds. -- Gold and silver trade mixed -- On the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for October delivery rose Rs 1,292 or 1.3 per cent last week. In global markets, COMEX gold futures surged USD 51 or 1.52 per cent to settle at USD 3,413.80 per ounce in New York on Saturday. Silver, on the other hand, extended losses. MCX silver futures for September delivery plunged Rs 2,829 or 2.5 per cent to end the week lower. COMEX silver futures managed marginal gains of 0.59 per cent to close at USD 37.08 per ounce. "Gold continues to be viewed as a reliable store of value, especially with the US Fed maintaining a restrictive policy stance and global uncertainties flaring," said Riya Singh, Research Analyst - Commodities and Currency at Emkay Global Financial Services. She noted that gold has gained nearly 25 per cent year-to-date, peaking above USD 3,500 per ounce in April on the back of Middle East tensions and inflation worries. "Silver, however, faced a dual impact of industrial weakness and ETF-led support. It is under pressure due to weak Chinese PMI data, but strong ETF holdings and robust COMEX inventories offer a cushion," Singh added. -- Crude oil sees mixed cues -- Crude oil futures posted a mixed performance, with the MCX futures for August delivery rising by Rs 100 or 1.73 per cent. Globally, Brent crude futures fell by 3.94 per cent to USD 69.67 per barrel, while WTI crude slipped 2.79 per cent to USD 67.33 per barrel. Riya Singh said, "Brent retreated from USD 67.74 to USD 71.26 after failing to sustain five-week highs. Demand concerns from geopolitical uncertainty and trade disruptions kept the rally in check". She highlighted that India's crude imports are particularly vulnerable, with around 35 per cent coming from Russia. Adding that any secondary sanctions on Russian oil imports could force India to more expensive alternatives, which could impact domestic refiners such as IOC and Reliance, and affect the rupee. Heena Naik added that crude surged by over 5 per cent as investors focused on developments on the US President's tighter deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine. However, a weak industrial demand and uncertainty over OPEC+ supply decisions kept oil prices under pressure. -- Commodities to see volatility this week -- Analysts emphasised that as investors deal with the effects of US tariffs, China's economic slowdown, and shifting geopolitical tensions, commodity markets are expected to be turbulent in the weeks ahead. "Price discovery has been skewed by Trump's tariff structure, which targets semi-finished goods while excluding raw copper forms. Regarding demand and future trading channels, the market is still unclear," Singh stated. Naik said that investors should prepare for ongoing fluctuations in base metals, energy, and precious metals due to policy uncertainty and the rising US dollar's impact on global commodities.

Telangana developing into a ‘handloom hub', says Kishan Reddy

Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, here on Sunday, said Telangana is fast developing into a handloom hub with the proposed Kakatiya Mega Textile Park in Warangal sanctioned by the Centre expected to attract investments worth ₹10,000 crore providing employment to an estimated two lakh persons. The Modi government had also distributed 100 electronic jacquard weaving machines here and helped establish 31 handloom producer companies. Efforts are also on to revive the Himroo fabrics, Pithambari sarees and Armoor silk sarees, he said, at the inaugural of the week-long celebrations to mark National Handloom Day held in Shilparamam. The Centre is also aiding in setting up handloom clusters in Siddipet, Kamalapur, Dubbak and Warangal. Training has been provided for about 900 weavers in modern methods and 'Mudra' loans worth ₹70 crore were sanctioned, said the Minister. In Telangana, there are an estimated 48,000 artisans at work on 17 different kinds of handlooms, including Pochampalli Ikkat, Narayanapet cotton sarees and others which have attained international fame. The Centre is ready to consider any proposal to help the handloom sector, which forms a key component of the country's financial system, as it is second only to the agriculture sector with an estimated five crore people engaged either directly or indirectly. The Centre has been implementing a '5F' strategy like farm to fibre, fabric, fashion and foreign markets, for developing the sector in the last 11 years under the 'Make in India' programme. Handlooms sector constitutes 2.3% of the country's GDP, 13% of industrial output and 12% of exports making India the sixth largest exporter. Mr. Reddy said that in 2023-24, about three lakh crore rupees in exports were realised, and the Modi government plans to take it to ₹9 lakh crore rupees by 2030. Pension of ₹8,000 a month is being given to handloom weavers, a ₹2 lakh scholarship is being awarded for their children wanting to study higher studies, including textile design and about 20 weavers were sent to other countries for exhibitions, he added.

RBI To Stop Rs 500 Notes In ATMs? Here's What Govt Said

New Delhi: The government on Sunday termed "untrue" a WhatsApp message that claimed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had ordered banks to cease issuing Rs 500 notes via ATMs by September 30, saying no such instruction has been issued. The deceptive message also claims that 90 per cent of ATMs will cease issuing Rs 500 notes by March 31, 2026, and 75 per cent will do so by September 30. Additionally, it advises people to begin "liquidating" their Rs 500 notes and implies that only Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes will be accessible through ATMs in the future. Responding to the message, the government media arm Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit said that the RBI has not issued any such instructions, and Rs 500 notes are still legal tender. In a post on X, it clarified that the widely shared claim is untrue and advised people not to believe such false information. "Has RBI asked banks to stop disbursing Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025? A message falsely claiming exactly this is spreading on #WhatsApp. #PIBFactCheck, No such instruction has been issued by the @RBI, Rs 500 notes will continue to be legal tender," the post said. The Fact Check Unit stressed the significance of confirming any financial updates from official sources and cautioned that such messages are intended to deceive. "Don't fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it!" it stated. A similar claim went viral on social media last month. The previous message, which was widely shared on WhatsApp as well, implied that the RBI had a phased plan to stop issuing Rs 500 notes to ATMs by 2026. PIB Fact Check had denied the allegation at that time as well, claiming that no such directive had been issued. Authorities have emphasised the importance of exercising caution when consuming and disseminating unconfirmed information. Users are advised to rely only on reliable sources, such as the RBI's official communications or PIB's fact-checking handle, for any updates regarding currency, as misinformation about it has become more prevalent.
