Mumbai gets 2 bridges and a promenade

Mumbai: On the eve of Independence Day, the Maharashtra government on Thursday inaugurated five infrastructure projects in the city, including a curved cable-stayed bridge that forms an extension of the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR), a new arm of the Kalanagar Flyover, and a promenade for pedestrians and cyclists along the Mumbai Coastal Road. (Photo by Satish Bate/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) 'These projects are set to significantly enhance Mumbai's urban mobility, strengthen infrastructure resilience and boost workforce capabilities,' said Sanjay Mukherjee, metropolitan commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The most significant project for motorists is the cable-stayed bridge passing over the Western Express Highway (WEH), which is the third in a series of extensions to the SCLR, whose construction commenced in 2016. The new bridge will allow motorists coming from the eastern suburbs and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) via the SCLR to bypass the congested Kalina junction and land directly on the WEH after the Vakola Flyover. 'The completion of the final phase of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road, with South Asia's first sharp-curve cable-stayed bridge, is a proud achievement that will ease travel between the Eastern and Western Express Highways,' said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, during Thursday's online inauguration ceremony at BKC. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde added that people will now be able to travel between Chembur and Dahisar without a traffic signal. However, despite the new bridge, which was built at a cost of around ₹1,000 crore and faced years of delays, constraints regarding the slow movement of vehicular traffic on the WEH remain, as was the case on Thursday evening. Fadnavis said during the inauguration ceremony that this would be solved once the second phase of the coastal road is opened in a few years. 'Since the Western Express Highway carries the load of 60% of vehicles from the western suburbs, we are constructing a sea link and northern coastal road right up to Bhayandar. This will be a parallel highway that will alleviate traffic woes,' he said. Another project inaugurated on Thursday was a 340-metre arm of the Kalanagar Flyover, built at a cost of ₹20 crore. Vehicles coming from Dharavi's T Junction can now head towards south Mumbai and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link by avoiding the Kalanagar junction. During the inauguration ceremony, Fadnavis shared that his previous government had taken a decision in 2015-16 to increase the number of entry-exit points to BKC. With the SCLR bridge and the Kalanagar Flyover's partial opening, five of the six entry-exit points are now ready. The only remaining entry-exit point is also part of SCLR, linking the Asian Heart Hospital Road in the central business district with the Vakola flyover, outside the Indian Air Force establishment in Santacruz. This link is expected to be ready only in December. Starting Saturday, the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road in south Mumbai, inaugurated last year, will also be open 24/7 for motorists rather than the current timings of 7 am to midnight. The state government also inaugurated 5.25 km of the 7.5-km-long promenade along the coastal road, part of which replaces the earlier Worli Sea Face promenade. The promenade stretches set to open are between Priyadarshini Park and Haji Ali, and then from Baroda Palace to Worli. Four pedestrian underpasses—located at Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli, the Worli Dairy School at Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg, the Haji Ali junction and through the Akriti parking lot at Bhulabhai Desai Marg—were also opened. 'Both these projects are essential in their own way, and Mumbaikars have been eagerly waiting for them,' said transport expert Vivek Pai. 'The SCLR extension will save commuters time by directly connecting the SCLR to WEH signal-free. On the other hand, the coastal road promenade will increase the green lungs of the city and finally provide pedestrian connection to the sea once again.' Fadnavis also cautioned motorists not to display their 'driving skills' and endanger their own lives and those of others on the coastal road. 'There are surveillance cameras installed on the entire stretch of the coastal road. You will get caught, and a ticket will get delivered to your doorstep. Please maintain traffic discipline,' he said. Meanwhile, MMRDA and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) also opened a 100-metre foot over bridge at Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. MMRC posted on X: 'There will be no more rushing through traffic before your flight. Now, from CSMIA–T2 Metro Station to Airport Terminal-2 in just a few steps. The newly built bridge connects Lift Entry/Exit A1 at ground level straight to the terminal.'

Now, bus shelters inadequate at Mannarpuram, TVS Tollgate

Trichy: With more moffusil passengers relying on bus stops at TVS tollgate and Mannarpuram to leave or enter Trichy city instead of travelling to KKBT at Panjapur to catch their buses, the existing shelters have turned inadequate. New stoppages having cropped up at crucial road junctions, passengers have sought additional bus shelters and streamlining of halting points for mofussil buses leaving the city. More than 1,500 mofussil buses are operated from the newly commissioned Panjapur KKBT. However, daily commuters travelling to Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Dindigul are using Mannarpuram and TVS tollgate stops to board these buses. Besides existing bus shelters, passengers have started using service roads of Trichy-Chennai NH to board and disembark from buses. At Mannarpuram, the service road connecting the NH with Trichy junction RoB's Chennai arm is being used to board mofussil buses to Manapparai. Buses are now stopping at a distance before the existing bus stops. "In recent rains, passengers were drenched as there was no shelter. As monsoon is fast approaching, new shelters are needed at Mannarpuram," Sakthivel Rengasamy, a commuter to Manapparai, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This year's most comfortable shoes are a hit with the over-40 crowd Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo While city buses are halting at designated stops, mofussil buses pick up passengers on the service road. The practice chokes vehicles entering the city as free-left is blocked by the buses at Mannarpuram. As a solution, city police suggested developing new shelters near the starting point of the service road at Mannarpuram, to avoid buses blocking the free-left for other vehicles entering the city. At TVS tollgate, where passengers board buses to Pudukottai and Thanjavur, existing bus shelters have become inadequate too. District collector V Saravanan promised to look into the demands for new bus shelter. New traffic signal on cards at TVS Tollgate Trichy: City traffic police are planning to survey the entries and exits of TVS tollgate junction on Trichy-Chennai national highway where Trichy-Pudukottai national highway and multiple city roads converge. "We have requested a traffic signal system developer to survey TVS tollgate as we are unable to manually manage the vehicular movement. Buses criss-cross the junction frequently, especially after the commissioning of KKBT," a police source said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Bookings spike, traffic builds as long I-Day weekend travel kicks off

1 2 Pune: The three-day weekend, with Independence Day on Friday, has triggered a travel rush, increasing traffic on highways and boosting hotel bookings, with highway police deploying extra personnel to areas prone to bottlenecks, aiming to prevent massive traffic jams. Anticipating congestion, entrepreneur Pratibha Singh brought her Mumbai trip forward to Thursday, while Adhersh Nair also advanced his trip to Bengaluru, booking Thursday tickets to avoid weekend chaos. "I am visiting my brother who stays in Mumbai. Initially, I had planned to leave early on Friday, but opted for Thursday fearing traffic chaos on Friday morning," Singh said. Nair said he advanced his trip due to construction work on the route. "Besides, the ticket prices are higher for Friday," he said. We'll focus on areas like Khed-Shivapur, where road construction is causing bottlenecks, and Karad, where bridge work is under way. We'll rely on manpower to manage traffic, rather than using drones or other technology. " Deshmukh said some heavy duty cranes have also been deployed at Lonavla-Khandala section to shift vehicles in case of breakdown. "Our teams at Urse Toll Plaza and in the ghat section will tell the heavy vehicle drivers to use only left lanes for their movements. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed to travel on the middle and right lanes," he said. IT professional and Baner resident Shantanu Raut altered his plan to visit friends in Mumbai for the long weekend after finding all intercity trains fully booked. "My friend suggested that I opt for a bus instead, departing Thursday evening, despite concerns about potential traffic jams on the Pune-Mumbai expressway," he said. City roads connecting the highways would also have a significant police presence to manage traffic and prevent congestion. Manoj Patil, additional commissioner of police in Pune, said leaves of almost all traffic police officers have been cancelled. "Additional personnel have been deployed on key routes out of Pune, including Singhad Road, Satara Road and Nagar Road, to manage traffic. Heavy rush is expected till Friday morning, while Sunday evening and Monday morning will focus on inbound traffic," Patil said. Rohini Patil, a Tilak Road resident, planned her family's Nashik trip well in advance, booking bus tickets ahead of time. "I just hope for a smooth journey, as the long weekend is a rare break for my husband's hectic work schedule. We just want to relax, but are bracing for potential traffic jams," she said. Mili Joseph, who stays on NIBM Road, said she and her husband were all set to spend the long weekend in Goa. "We booked airfares last month. Our plan is just to relax at a resort in north Goa," she said. Some residents decided to stay at home instead of travelling, anticipating the traffic and rainfall forecasts. "Weekends are usually packed, but this time it'll be worse. With rain and poor road conditions, driving will be a nightmare," businessman R Joglekar, who postponed his Shirdi trip to Tuesday, said. MTDC and hotel association officials said there's been a significant spike in bookings for hotels, resorts, and other rental accommodations around Pune. Deepak Harane, regional manager at Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), said, "Our properties in coastal areas like Ganpatiphule and Tarkarli are fully booked, with 95-100% occupancy. Monsoon spots like Malshej Ghat and Matheran are also nearly full, at 90-95%. Other popular destinations like Shirdi, Ajanta and Ellora are around 90% booked. The three-day weekend and school break have boosted travel, with coastal areas attracting Pune and Mumbai residents, while places like Ajanta and Ellora are drawing visitors from outside the state too." Dhiren Nagpal, secretary of the Mahabaleshwar Hotel Owners' Association, said bookings were high for Friday and Saturday. "It is a mixed crowd of people. Families are largely opting for traditional hotels and resorts, while groups and stags are preferring rental bungalows and similar accommodations," Nagpal added.
