PAPAR: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Ruslan Muharam rejected speculation that PBS and Parti Solidariti Tanah Air Ku (Star) might leave Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) ahead of the coming state election. The Lumadan Assemblyman said there is no reason for such action, as PBS and Star would remain in the coalition following their long-standing agreement.
Advertisement He described the claims as mere speculation deliberately stirred by irresponsible parties to create division and weaken GRS' political strength. 'Our understanding within GRS has been established for a long time, especially as we work together in the State Government administration, bringing various initiatives for the people that have made the opposition feel threatened. Therefore, these claims are just rumours as we approach the 17th state election and there are certainly attempts to weaken GRS' strength,' he said after officiating the Lumadan PBS Division Youth Leadership Camp on Saturday. Ruslan was responding to speculation about grassroots pressure for PBS and Star to leave GRS to ensure local party aspirations are realised following concerns that GRS' potential cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) could affect seats both parties wish to contest. When asked whether GRS should go solo or cooperate with PH in the state election, Ruslan personally believes the current political scenario suggests GRS should contest alone. However, he acknowledged that cooperation with PH is also important to maintain Federal-State government relations for the people's benefit. He noted that PH prefers GRS, particularly Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor, to continue leading the State Government rather than Umno, as demonstrated during the previous Langkah Kinabalu episode. 'Looking at the scenario, it would be good for us to contest solo, but cooperation between Federal and State governments is also very important and beneficial. 'We cannot just throw away PH after they supported us during the previous coup attempt, especially when PH and Umno cooperate at the Federal level. However, this is my personal opinion, and we leave it entirely to GRS leadership to make whatever decisions,' he said. For the record, PBS currently holds seven seats, namely Tandek, Matunggong, Tamparuli, Kiulu, Lumadan, Kundasang and Telupid, while Star holds six seats, namely Paginatan, Tambunan, Sook, Bingkor, Tulid and Liawan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Shafie denies link to coup bid

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: 'Langkah Kinabalu was not my move. Ask them what they were fighting about. We (Warisan) are the opposition,' Shafie said. Kuala Lumpur: Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has categorically denied his party's involvement in the 'Langkah Kinabalu' move that attempted to topple the Sabah Government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in early January 2023. The former Sabah Chief Minister dismissed claims linking Warisan to the political episode, which Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlina Arif described as a betrayal of public trust. Speaking to FMT at Parliament, Shafie attributed the Langkah Kinabalu incident to internal disputes between Hajiji and Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, rather than any orchestrated move by his opposition party. 'Langkah Kinabalu was not my move. Ask them what they were fighting about. We (Warisan) are the opposition,' he said. The controversy resurfaced after Norazlina, who was with Warisan during the attempted takeover, publicly criticised the move as 'the greatest betrayal' of Sabahans who expected unity similar to the federal Unity Government. She said the political manoeuvre was allegedly motivated by promises of four to five Sabah Cabinet positions for Warisan leaders. The takeover attempt ultimately failed due to insufficient support, with six Umno assemblymen backing Hajiji and strengthening his position. Hajiji, who became Chief Minister in September 2020, retained support from GRS and Pakatan Harapan representatives, including Norazlina at the time. Following the failed coup attempt, Bung was removed from his Deputy Chief Minister post, replaced by Tanjung Keramat Assemblyman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Norazlina subsequently left Warisan on Feb 6, 2023. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Immigration raids put off to facilitate digital registration of foreign workers

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Saifuddin chairing two joint meetings with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government on Thursday announced a moratorium on immigration enforcement in Sabah to allow the State to complete its ambitious programme of digitally registering foreign workers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move was aimed at helping the State Government gather accurate, centralised biometric data to better manage its large migrant population. 'We agreed today to facilitate the digital registration of foreign nationals by the Sabah Government. For that reason, we will suspend enforcement to give them space to register under this initiative,' Saifuddin told reporters after chairing two joint meetings with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Saifuddin said 113,282 foreign nationals have so far been recorded in the system, mostly plantation workers, but with plans to extend the registration to agriculture, manufacturing, mining and quarry sectors. The database, which stores photos and fingerprints, will enable real-time monitoring, tracking and policy-making based on credible data. Saifuddin stressed that the exercise has nothing to do with granting citizenship or permanent residency, and that citizenship matters were handled separately under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. At the same meeting, the Special Committee on Citizenship for Sabah processed 1,247 applications, drawn from over 2,000 submitted between 2021 and 2024, covering categories such as children born out of wedlock, those in care homes and applicants whose parents are non-citizens. The Home Minister also addressed the often-misunderstood plight of the Bajau Laut, or sea gypsies, a stateless community traditionally living in coastal waters off Sabah. He said State-led projects, such as one at Pantai Manis in Semporna, were providing structured settlements and training opportunities in sectors like agriculture and plantations, including at Felda Sahabat, contrary to public perceptions of neglect. 'Far from being abandoned, there are efforts to house them on land and train them for work in various fields. These are rarely reported, so people don't see the State Government's ongoing work,' he said. Turning to the high-profile death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, Saifuddin confirmed that Bukit Aman's special task force had found serious procedural failures by local police, including a decision not to proceed with a post-mortem despite having no legal barrier to do so. He said the exhumation had been completed and preliminary forensic findings were consistent with earlier medical examinations. The results have been shared with Zara's mother and her lawyer. 'On Monday at 11.30am, I will deliver a ministerial statement in Parliament to explain this matter in full,' Saifuddin said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine says eastern front stabilised after recent Russian thrust

REUTERS/Oleksandr Ratushniak/File Photo KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian troops have stabilised the battlefield in an area of eastern Ukraine where Russian forces had made a sudden push this week to pierce Ukrainian defences, the regional governor said on Thursday. Ukraine said small groups of Russian infantry had thrust some 10 kilometres (six miles) toward its main defensive line near the town of Dobropillia, raising fears of a wider breakthrough that would further threaten key cities. The advance, just days before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were due to meet in Alaska, appeared aimed at pressuring Kyiv to give up land in pursuit of peace three-and-a-half years into Russia's invasion of its neighbour. "The situation in the Dobropillia sector has stabilised," Vadym Filashkin, governor of the embattled Donetsk region, wrote the Telegram messaging app. "Thanks to the heroic efforts of our Defence Forces, the front line is reliably holding." Kyiv's military, which has played down the scale of the Russian thrust, had dispatched extra forces to the area including units of the battle-hardened Azov Corps. General Staff spokesperson Andriy Kovalyov, in comments to the Interfax Ukraine news agency, echoed Filashkin's statement and credited Azov forces with inflicting heavy enemy casualties. The Russian thrust had also fuelled criticism of Ukraine's military high command. Defence analyst Konrad Muzyka wrote on X that Russian forces had made "minimal gains" in the area on Wednesday but had inched forward further south, near the strategic city of Pokrovsk.
