‘The Boys' Star Erin Moriarty Reveals Graves' Disease Diagnosis
'The Boys' opened up about the health update in an Instagram post on Friday. She noted that since beginning treatment she's 'been increasing in strength.'
'A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves' disease. Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on. It's been increasing in strength ever since,' she wrote alongside selfies of herself and what appeared to be snapshots of her life lately.
Among the series of photos that she posted, Moriarty shared a screenshot of a conversation with her mother back in May where the actress wrote, 'I'm serious; I really need relief. I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so shit and removed from who I am, I can't live like this forever.'
The star warned her 2 million-plus followers to 'go get checked' if they feel their light 'dimming, even slightly.'
'Don't 'suck it up' and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. Shit's hard enough as is,' she urged.
Explaining that 'autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body,' Moriarty reflected on her diagnosis while telling social media users that she 'would've caught this sooner' had she not 'chalked it all up to stress and fatigue.'
'Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours,' she added. 'Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely. One thing I can say: if I hadn't chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would've caught this sooner.'
Moriarty's fans sent her well wishes in the comments section under her post.
'So happy you're on the road to healing,' one person wrote.
Another said, 'Sending so much love and support.'
Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease which primarily affects the thyroid gland, according to the National Library of Medicine. The disease affects nearly 1 in 100 Americans, and can cause symptoms such as weight loss, irregular heartbeat, fatigue, muscle weakness and more.

Appeals court upholds Arkansas ban on gender-affirming care for minors
A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a 2021 Arkansas law banning gender-affirming care for minors, ruling that parents 'do not have unlimited authority to make medical decisions for their children.' The St. Louis-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit ruled 8-2 that the Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act does not discriminate against transgender people or violate the rights of medical professionals — rejecting a closely watched challenge to the nation's first-of-its-kind ban on gender transition treatment for transgender youth. The SAFE Act also prohibits doctors from referring trans youth to other providers for gender-affirming care, which can include puberty blockers and hormone therapy, among other treatments. Tuesday's ruling follows the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in June, upholding Tennessee's similar ban on gender-affirming care for minors. In the court's majority opinion, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote that Tennessee's ban does not discriminate on the basis of sex and that courts must give elected officials wide latitude to pass legislation when there is scientific and policy debate about the safety of such medical treatments. The 8th Circuit cited the Supreme Court's ruling in U.S. v. Skrmetti throughout its majority opinion. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin (R) praised the 8th Circuit's decision Tuesday. 'I applaud the court's decision recognizing that Arkansas has a compelling interest in protecting the physical and psychological health of children and am pleased that children in Arkansas will be protected from risky, experimental procedures with lifelong consequences,' Griffin said in a statement. The American Civil Liberties Association — which brought the original challenge to the 2021 law alongside a doctor who provided gender-affirming care in the state and four transgender youths and their families — slammed the ruling. 'This is a tragically unjust result for transgender Arkansans, their doctors, and their families,' Holly Dickson, executive director of the ACLU of Arkansas, said in a statement Tuesday. 'The state had every opportunity and failed at every turn to prove that this law helps children; in fact, this is a dangerous law that harms children. The law has already had a profound impact on families across Arkansas who all deserve a fundamental right to do what is best for their children.' Griffin and the state's medical board filed the appeal with the 8th Circuit in July 2023, after U.S. District Judge James Moody of the Eastern District of Arkansas blocked them from enforcing the state's ban on medical treatment for transitioning young people. Moody had said the ban violated the rights of transgender people and endangered their health: 'Rather than protecting children or safeguarding medical ethics, the evidence showed that the prohibited medical care improves the mental health and well-being of patients and that, by prohibiting it, the state undermined the interests it claims to be advancing.' The 8th Circuit, sitting en banc, reversed Moody's ruling. 'The minors argue that the Act classifies based on sex in violation of the Equal Protection Clause. They argue that a minor's sex determines whether he or she can receive certain medical treatments,' Judge Duane Benton wrote in the 8th Circuit's majority opinion. 'To the contrary, as the Supreme Court explained about a similar Tennessee law, the Act classifies based only on age and medical procedure.' 'The minors alternatively assert that the Act discriminates based on transgender status,' Benton wrote. 'To the contrary, the Act does not classify based on transgender status. Like the Tennessee law upheld by the Supreme Court, the Act effectively divides minors into two groups. In one group are minors seeking drugs or surgeries for the purposes that the Act prohibits. In the other group are minors seeking drugs or surgeries for purposes the Act does not prohibit.'

Flesh-eating bacteria have caused several deaths in Florida and Louisiana this summer. How to reduce your risk of Vibrio vulnificus infection before swimming in the ocean.
Infections are rare, but a person can get sick by swimming in the ocean with an open wound or by eating contaminated raw shellfish. Health officials in several states are alerting residents about a flesh-eating bacteria that thrives in warm coastal waters. Approximately 60 cases of Vibrio vulnificus have been confirmed in 11 states, according to Today. The highest numbers have been in Louisiana (17 cases, including 4 deaths) and Florida (16 cases, including 5 deaths). North Carolina has also seen 7 cases, Yahoo News confirmed with the state's Department of Health and Human Services via email. Vibrio vulnificus cases are considered rare, with between 150 and 200 infections reported in the U.S. each year, according to the Cleveland Clinic. However, many people with an infection can become seriously ill, requiring intensive care or limb amputation. 'About 1 in 5 people with this infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill,' according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Does this mean you should avoid the ocean altogether? Here's what to know and what safety measures to keep in mind: What is Vibrio vulnificus? Vibrio are a type of bacteria that thrive in warm coastal waters during the summer months from May to October. This includes salt water and brackish water, which is a mixture of salt and freshwater often found where rivers meet the ocean. The bacteria are found particularly along the Gulf Coast states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi. There are different kinds of Vibrio that can lead to various infections. Vibrio vulnificus can be particularly dangerous because it can cause severe and life-threatening infections. This specific type of bacteria is known as 'flesh-eating' because it can destroy muscle tissue and skin. 'Many people with [Vibrio] vulnificus wound infection require intensive care or surgical tissue removal,' the CDC says. How do people get infected? There are two ways that people can get infected: When a person's open wound is exposed to ocean water or seafood contaminated with Vibrio bacteria. A small cut, scrape or wound from a recent surgery, piercing or tattoo can allow bacteria in. This can happen when a person goes swimming or fishing or prepares raw seafood. When someone eats raw or undercooked seafood or ingests contaminated water while swimming. Oysters, in particular, can concentrate the Vibrio bacteria inside them. What are the symptoms of a Vibrio infection? These are the common signs and symptoms of a Vibrio infection, according to the CDC: Watery diarrhea Stomach cramps Nausea and vomiting Fever/chills Signs of a Vibrio bloodstream infection: Fever/chills Dangerously low blood pressure Blistering skin lesions Signs of a Vibrio wound infection: Fever Pain, redness, swelling, warmth at the wound site Redness Pain Swelling Warmth Discoloration (turning a color other than normal) Discharge (leaking fluids) The Cleveland Clinic and the CDC advise people to go to the emergency room immediately if there are signs of a suspected Vibrio vulnificus infection. Are some people more at risk of an infection? Anyone can become infected with the bacteria through a wound. People with underlying health conditions like liver disease, diabetes and immunocompromising conditions are at higher risk for wound infection, according to the CDC. How can people stay safe? Florida's Health Department and the CDC provide some tips to prevent Vibrio vulnificus infections: Don't eat raw oysters and other raw shellfish. Instead, cook them thoroughly. Avoid cross contamination with raw seafood and other cooked food or shellfish. If you have an open wound or broken skin, avoid warm salt or brackish water, if possible. Cover your wound with a waterproof bandage if it could come into contact with coastal water, raw seafood or its drippings or juices. Wear protective gloves or clothing when handling raw shellfish. Be vigilant after coastal floods, hurricanes and storm surges. Coastal waters forced into inland areas increase the risk for Vibrio wound infections, particularly for people who are older or who have underlying health conditions.
