More than four years after his last game, Philip Rivers retires as a Charger
More than four years after his last game — a playoff loss in Buffalo with the Colts — Philip Rivers has officially retired, with the Chargers.
While stats like this aren't regularly kept, it's got to be one of the longest gaps between a player's last game and his official retirement with one of his former teams. Still, it was a nice surprise on the Monday afternoon of training-camps-are-open week. Even if my first thought was that the algorithm had dug deeper into the past than it usually does.
Rivers ranks sixth all-time in passing yards, with 63,440. More than Matt Ryan, Dan Marino, Eli Manning, Warren Moon, and (for now) Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. Rivers is also sixth in passing touchdowns with 421. More than Ryan, Marino, Eli, Moon, Ben Roethlisberger, and (for now) Stafford.
While not on the same level as the team's schedule-release videos, the segment posted on social media by the Chargers is worth your time. If only to remember his squeaky-voiced taunt to a Jaguars defender about a 'NINETY! YARD! TOUCHDOWN!'
It's a shame he never played in a Super Bowl. And it's a shame he doesn't get the attention he should. Philip Rivers was a great player, and a great character, of the past 20 years in the NFL.

Las Vegas gave up 116.9 rushing yards per game last season, ranking 13th in the NFL. However, the run defense looked like a shell of itself in the first quarter on Thursday night. The Raiders gave up 68 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in the first quarter, with George Holani leading the way for Seattle with seven carries for 61 yards and the score. His longest carry went for 24 yards. You never want to make too much of a preseason game, but the Raiders had all of their starters on the field for the first drive, and many starters stayed in for the remainder of the first quarter. Also bear in mind that the Seahawks did not play their starters, so the Raiders gave up those numbers against Seattle's backups. Not good. We'll see if Las Vegas can bounce back in their preseason Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, Aug. 16. Ashton Jeanty debut grades: Raiders rookie RB underwhelms in limited action vs. Seahawks originally appeared on The Sporting News Running back Ashton Jeanty has high expectations placed on his shoulders. The Boise State product is coming off an electric final season in college and is expected to help the Raiders turn their fortunes around even as a rookie. Jeanty nearly set all-time records at Boise State in 2024. He played in 14 games and ran for 2,601 yards with 29 touchdowns. Jeanty was on the heels of Barry Sanders' record of 2,628 yards in a season but fell just 27 yards short. His 29 touchdowns were eight shy of Sanders' record of 37. Even though the Raiders are just starting the preseason, there is pressure for Jeanty to show that he was worth the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft off rip. Las Vegas traded for quarterback Geno Smith this offseason and hired former Seattle head coach Pete Carroll to try to right the ship. Grading Ashton Jeanty's rookie debut Grade: C Unfortunately, there wasn't a ton to grade. Jeanty was on the field for two drives, but the Raiders weren't able to move the ball on either. Jeanty had only three carries and amassed -1 yard from his workload. The offensive line could not provide any protection for him, and after an initial gain of three yards, he was dropped in the backfield. He picked up a few blocks on routine passing plays, but ultimately, he did nothing notable in the passing game either. As mundane as this performance was, Jeanty should be fine in the long run. The rookie will almost assuredly lead the team in touches and will get ample opportunity to show what he can do throughout the rest of the preseason and regular season. This first preseason game, though? He will have to have the mind of a goldfish and instantly turn his attention to the team's game next week. The lone reason that he didn't get a "D" or an "F" for his debut was that he had a sweet, spur-of-the-moment spin move to avoid a tackle before the offensive line collapsed and allowed him to get taken down in the backfield. The rookie's first carry went for three yards. That was the only action he received on his first drive. Seattle took out Geno Smith for the second drive but left Jeanty in. The rookie got a carry on second down. He hit a nice spin move but was tackled in the backfield as the offensive line didn't provide much support. After a first down, Jeanty got a carry and picked up a few yards. There was a penalty for offensive offside, but it was declined to bring up second down. Jeanty was then subbed out, and the Raiders couldn't convert a first down on the next two plays and had to punt. Shane Steichen with injury update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson
Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Anthony Richardson exited the team's preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. On the Colts' second possession, Richardson took the snap while Ravens' outside linebacker David Ojabo came in untouched off the edge. Richardson was looking to his left while Ojabo came from his right and hit him for the sack. Richardson exited the game with what was called a finger injury. Shane Steichen later clarified that it was a dislocated finger and he's considered day to day. "He's doing all right," Steichen said. "It's a dislocation. They popped it back in.
