Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
is scheduled to talk to Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday and plans to visit China in August for the first time since 2018, amid deteriorating relations with the United States.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva intends to talk to PM Modi on Thursday to discuss US President Donald Trump's trade tariffs, officials from both Brasilia and New Delhi, told Bloomberg.
Modi is also set to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, a Beijing-led regional security alliance, where he will hold separate talks with President Xi Jinping. The SCO summit is planned for August 31 and September 1 in Tianjin.
Trump vs BRICS
Modi's discussions with Lula and his visit to China, whilst previously scheduled, have gained additional importance following Trump's implementation of 50% tariffs on India, imposed due to the trade deal stalemate and India's and Russian oil imports. India maintains its stance on continuing Russian crude oil purchases and has termed the US tariffs as "unjustified."

Brazil has also been subjected to similar 50% tariffs by the US administration.
The most recent meeting between Xi and Modi occurred in October at the
BRICS summit
in Kazan. Relations between the nations have been improving since the 2020 clash between India and China.
Currently, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is in Moscow, whilst External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is scheduled to visit. Later this year, Modi is expected to welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin to India.
Trump pressures India to stop oil trade with Russia
Trump has demanded that India stop buying discounted Russian oil, suggesting it supports Russia's military operations in the Ukraine conflict. His stance is influenced by his aims to decrease the US trade imbalance with India and advance negotiations with Russian President Putin towards resolving the Ukrainian situation.

Donald Trump's 25% additional tariff on India: What are 'secondary tariffs' and how do they differ from 'secondary sanctions'? Explained
India, being the third-largest oil consumer globally, has substantially increased its Russian crude oil purchases following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, primarily due to the considerable price advantages offered.
The scenario creates a delicate situation for PM Modi, who needs to simultaneously control India's oil import expenses whilst maintaining balanced diplomatic relations with both Russia and the US.
When questioned about targeting India specifically for additional sanctions despite China being Russia's largest crude oil customer, Trump provided an ambiguous response.
"It may happen. I don't know, I can't tell you yet.
But we did it with India. We are doing it probably with a couple of others, one of them could be China," he stated, indicating potential future actions against other nations.
Incidentally, even as Trump expresses displeasure over India's oil dealings with Russia, both the European Union and the United States maintain substantial trade relationships with Moscow.

Their continued purchases encompass liquefied natural gas, enriched uranium, and various commodities, amounting to transactions worth billions in euros and dollars.
India on its part has said that it will continue to protect its interests. Soon after Trump signed the executive order on an additional 25% tariff on India, the ministry of external affairs said, 'It is extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest. We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.

'50% is not tariff, it's an embargo'

Gokaldas Exports is among the largest players in the garments business, supplying goods to top global markets. The company's managing director Siva Ganapathi speaks to TOI over the impact and plans to tackle the 50% tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods. Excerpts: What will be the impact of the 50% additional tariff on Indian goods? Let's first understand the impact of the 20% tariff. Ultimately, the garment price has to increase and the customer has to pay. At the moment, there is a reluctance to increase prices for consumers, and buyers had asked us to absorb a portion of the initially imposed 10% tariff, which was shared with the entire supply chain, including those selling fabrics and spinners and the others. But 20% is too high to be absorbed by the supply chain. What this is going to do is force brands to consider pricing (-in the increase in tariff) and de-specing, something like shrinkflation, which means reducing some features to maintain the price with fewer features. For all practical purposes, 20% (tariff) is the new zero. There would be scope to increase some prices by next year. A 25% tariff on Indian goods can be managed and we can absorb it through some improvisation, although it is not desirable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo But 50% is not a tariff, it is an embargo. We will lose business. How do you combat this? Business will pivot to some other countries, we will try to move to some European markets, reduce capacity. That's the only way to counter it. It will require tremendous effort to find a solution to offset a 30% relative disadvantage (given 50% tariff on India). There has to be some give and take between India and the US. We hope that a rational outcome is found in the next two-three months and it comes close to 20%. If a solution is not found, the industry will be badly hit. India exports around $5 billion (worth of garments) to the US and it will not be easy for American buyers to overnight find this capacity in some other country. What should govt do to help the industry? It should speed up the FTA with the European Union, make sure that the UK agreement is implemented faster and clinch a deal with the US. In the interim, there should be some incentives for exports to the US to partly defray the costs, support the manpower in the sector and ensure their livelihood. After all, China does this to insulate its industry. The point is how do you stay in the game till a solution (with the US) is found. There can be some procedural changes which are pending for long, that will help reduce costs. The railway division oversees major stations like Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda and Berhampur. From April to June, the division issued 1.83 lakh paperless general and platform tickets, compared to 90,005 tickets issued in the first quarter of 2024-25. In 2022-23, around 1.27 lakh tickets were issued for 8.95 lakh passengers, generating Rs 1.53 crore. "This year-on-year growth shows that people want hassle-free services without standing in queues for platform or general tickets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This exponential growth is attributed to wider public acceptance, user-friendly technology and enhanced payment options such as UPI-based QR code transactions, leading to shorter queues and faster processing," read an official statement. The statement said passengers can now book journey, season and platform tickets directly from their smartphones, leveraging the UTS on mobile platform, eliminating the need for ticket printouts. "The app is available in Hindi, English, and regional languages, ensuring ease of use even for first-time users. Tickets are delivered directly to the app and can be shown to ticket-checking staff using the 'show ticket' option — no hard copy needed," an official source said. An official said passengers can now book unreserved tickets up to three days in advance for journeys above 200km and purchase half-yearly and yearly season tickets, apart from platform tickets, with ease. "The app supports multiple digital payment methods and is compatible with Android, iOS and Windows smartphones," the official added. After major dip in Swachhta rankings, Panchkula MC to buy 2 road sweeping machines for Rs 1.13 Cr

Panchkula: After receiving its worst-ever ranking in Swachhta Survekshan 2024, Municipal Corporation Panchkula has decided to purchase two mechanised road sweeping machines for 1.13 crore. This is the first time the civic body is directly investing in such equipment, aiming to boost efficiency and cut costs. Until now, the MC was hiring the services of two sweeping machines from a private contractor at a monthly cost of Rs 10 lakh, which includes fuel expenses. Confirming the move, mayor Kulbhushan Goyal said, "Buying our own machines will not only save on rental costs, but also allow us to use them as per our convenience and in a more effective manner. This step will significantly improve cleanliness across all areas." The machines will come with a two-year maintenance contract provided by the supplier company. A major challenge to maintaining cleanliness in Panchkula is the division of responsibility among three separate agencies — the Municipal Corporation, Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), and the PMDA — each responsible for specific areas or roads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Malaysia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo This fragmentation has led to a lack of coordination. The HSVP recently wrote to the MC, requesting it to take over cleaning duties in its sectors. However, a decision is pending. The mayor clarified that the MC is currently short-staffed, with only one Chief Sanitary Inspector (CSI) in place. During the recent Finance and Contract Committee Meeting (F&CC), a proposal to deploy staff along with sweeping machines in HSVP areas was also rejected by councillors, citing resource constraints. The decision to buy the machines comes amid growing concerns over Panchkula's slipping cleanliness standards. The city ranked a disappointing 219 out of cities with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakh in the Swachhta Survekshan 2024 released on July 17. Within Haryana, the city earlier ranked No. 3, but in the recent survey, it was placed at 22. MSID:: 123218398 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
