After weeks of struggling, Tigers hope D-backs can cure ills
A sense of relief enveloped the Detroit Tigers after their 10-4 victory over visiting Toronto on Sunday afternoon.
That snapped a six-game losing streak and was just their second win in 14 games. Detroit will now open a three-game home series against Arizona, beginning on Monday night.
'It's a sense of accomplishment,' manager AJ Hinch said. 'Obviously, we need a good feeling at the end of the day, we needed it all week. It's a fun win; it's a good win.'
The American League Central Division leaders hope it wasn't just a one-game reprieve.
'It's not like the end of things,' first baseman Spencer Torkelson said. 'It's not like it's all good now. We needed to play a clean, good baseball game. But seeing a W in the win column is definitely refreshing. It's like when you haven't got a hit in a while and seeing one fall. Sometimes that's all it takes.'
Right-hander Troy Melton will make his second career start for the Tigers in the series opener. Melton's debut didn't go as planned -- he gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings at Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
Melton's outing wasn't a complete washout. He struck out seven and tossed two scoreless innings to finish up his outing.
Melton is being given a chance to earn the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Keider Montero, who had a tenuous hold on that spot, was demoted to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.
Melton, 24, was Toledo's top starter this season. He posted a 2.72 ERA in eight games with nine walks and 56 strikeouts across 36 1/3 innings.
'He really needed the challenge up in the big leagues,' Hinch said. 'I think we saw, specifically in the back half of his outing, why we're excited about his present and his future.'
He'll be opposed by former Tiger Eduardo Rodriguez (3-6, 5.50).
Rodriguez bounced back from two poor outings to toss 6 1/3 shutout innings against Houston on Tuesday. Rodriguez surrendered 12 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings in his previous two starts.
Rodriguez believed he could have gone longer Tuesday but he was taken out after getting struck in the leg by a comebacker.
'I feel like that was the best I felt with my fastball all this year,' said Rodriguez, who is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in seven career starts against Detroit.
With the Arizona front office in sell mode heading toward the trade deadline, the on-field product has suffered. The Diamondbacks have lost five of their last six games, including back-to-back shutouts against Pittsburgh heading into this series.
The offense has produced just eight runs during the six-game span.
'Those things are natural,' outfielder Corbin Carroll said of the distractions caused by the trade deadline. 'Our coaches did a good job of trying to prevent something like that from happening, but I think stuff like that can creep in. I think it's also a little bit the nature of where some of the hitters, including myself, are at. Just a product of a couple of things.'
Third baseman Eugenio Suarez could have an eventful week. He's one of the biggest names on the trade market and the Tigers could be one of his suitors.

A year after they were (to a degree) deadline sellers, the Blue Jays are soaring
Even when they traded away a handful of established players at last year's deadline, the Toronto Blue Jays clearly believed a rebound was possible. A year later, they have a comfortable lead atop the AL East. It's hard to say that last year's deadline jump-started Toronto's turnaround, but the important thing is the Blue Jays didn't give up on their core despite being on their way to a last-place finish in 2024. They dealt players like Yusei Kikuchi and Justin Turner — but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette remained with Toronto. Keeping those two was something of a risk given that both could become free agents after this season. Bichette still can, but the Blue Jays were able to sign Guerrero to a $500-million, 14-year contract in April. Guerrero, Bichette and George Springer are part of a Toronto team that ranks third in the American League in OPS while leading the majors in batting average and on-base percentage. Tomoyuki Sugano throws 6 sharp innings, Tyler O'Neill homers again to help Orioles beat Rockies
BALTIMORE (AP) — Tomoyuki Sugano pitched six innings of four-hit ball, Tyler O'Neill homered in a third straight game and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Sunday. Dylan Carlson drove in two runs for the Orioles, who followed Saturday night's 18-0 blowout with a more conventional victory in the deciding matchup of a three-game series between last-place clubs. Sugano (8-5) gave up one run, walked two and matched his career high with eight strikeouts. The 35-year-old righty, who signed a one-year contract with Baltimore in December, could be headed to a contender before Friday's trade deadline. Although he was impressive on Sunday, Sugano has yielded 21 homers in 20 games and had a 7.88 ERA over his previous seven starts. RED SOX 4, DODGERS 3 BOSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning and Boston hung on to beat Los Angeles for a series win. Rookie Roman Anthony added an RBI triple for the Red Sox, who captured their first series since the All-Star break. Boston had a 10-game winning streak entering the break. Boston closer Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound with an apparent injury in the eighth inning. In to face the top of the Dodgers' order, his velocity was noticeably down to the mid-90 mph on his fastball instead of the high 90s to low 100s. Michael Conforto hit a solo homer and had two doubles for the Dodgers. PIRATES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 0 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes struck out nine and gave up three hits in six innings, Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes drove in two runs each, and Pittsburgh shut out Arizona for the second straight game. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes (6-8) is the first pitcher to have an ERA below 2 through his first 45 starts. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year sits at 1.89 for his career and 1.83 this year, which leads the majors. Skenes is the only starter this season who hasn't allowed a first-inning run. He struck out two in the first, including Geraldo Perdomo, who hadn't fanned in a league-best 39 straight at-bats. Gallen (7-12) allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Arizona scored one run in the three-game series, winning 1-0 in 11 innings Friday night. YANKEES 4, PHILLIES 3 NEW YORK (AP) — Ryan McMahon sparked a comeback with a tying, two-run double in a four-run second inning against Zack Wheeler, and New York beat Philadelphia to salvage the finale of a three-game series.
