Diogo Jota's childhood sweetheart wife, three young kids and tragic final promise

Diogo Jota made a heartbreaking promise of 'forever' to his wife just days before the fatal car crash that claimed the life of the Liverpool football pro and his brother, leaving behind three young children Liverpool star Diogo Jota was newly married to his childhood sweetheart when tragedy struck in a horrific car crash earlier this summer. ‌ The talented footballer and his brother Andre tragically died in a car accident near the city of Zamora in Spain on July 3, and the football world has been in mourning ever since. ‌ Diogo married his Rute Cardoso, 28, in a lavish ceremony on June 22, just days before his death. Sweet snaps show the loved-up couple with their three young children, blissfully unaware of the tragedy that lay before them. ‌ Now, his wife and children will be present at Liverpool's Premier League opener this evening where the team will play against Bournemouth. It's thought the club will pay tribute to their late player, with them retiring the number 20 shirt in his memory. READ MORE: Liverpool vs Bournemouth prediction, odds and betting offer Childhood sweethearts Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso first met in their teenage years in Porto, Portugal, having attended the same school. Friends and family watched as their relationship blossomed alongside Diogo's own rise through the footballing ranks. From local youth clubs to making his mark in the Premier League, Rute was always by his side, a constant support during the pressures of professional sport. Together, they built a family, welcoming three children over the years. Son Dinis was born in 2021, while Duarte was born in 2023. Their daughter arrived in November 2024. ‌ Those close to the family described Diogo as a devoted father who cherished every moment with his children, sometimes sharing snaps with his followers online. Dream wedding After years together, the couple finally tied the knot on June 22, 2025, in an intimate ceremony in Porto. The wedding was attended by friends, family, and teammates who gathered to witness the union. ‌ The couple shared glimpses of the special day on social media, with Diogo captioning a post, "A day we will never forget," and Rute responding, "My dream came true." The footballer replied, "But I'm the lucky one". The wedding day itself was a picture of happiness, from their first dance to moments of quiet intimacy shared between the couple. It seemed to mark the beginning of the next chapter in their lives, but sadly 11 days later news broke of Diogo's fatal crash. ‌ Stunning pictures shared via Instagram show the couple beaming from ear to ear in front of a church altar, with Rute looking breathtaking in an ivory dress and flowing veil. In one photo, they are accompanied by their three young children. Another snap shows the couple emerging from the church amid a flurry of confetti, embarking on what should have been the first exciting steps of a long and happy life together. Just 11 days after their wedding, Diogo and his brother André Silva were killed in a catastrophic car crash on Spain's A‑52 highway. Reports indicate that their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout, veered off the road, and caught fire, leaving no chance for escape. ‌ Heartbreakingly, Diogo's final social media post was the couple's wedding video that was posted less than 24 hours before the accident. Special vow to three children Diogo is survived by two sons and a daughter who was born in December 2024. Just a month before his daughter arrived, the footballer opened up about mental health and family life in a video on his club's YouTube channel. Sitting down with Lee Richardson, the club's performance psychologist, Diogo highlighted how football, being a team sport, can sometimes allow players to mask their feelings. ‌ "As a team sport, you can sometimes hide or benefit from what the team is doing or not. And in those individual sports, like boxing, Olympians, [they're by] themselves. So when they are not good, you can clearly see something is wrong," he shared. The doting father went on to discuss his children, explaining that even after being on the pitch all day, he had to be "on it" when he came home to his family. He shared: "When I go home after playing, I still have a family. I have two kids, three almost, and the dogs, and the stress, it doesn't stop. In a poignant vow to his family, he said: "You want to be the best father you can be". The star added: "[You] try to lead by example, give him good feedback, even though sometimes you want to get a bit more rest in the afternoon, and they are all happy because you're finally at home and they want to play. I had this yesterday after the game. I wanted to get a bit of rest. One of my kids wanted to play some football and you need to be on it." ‌ Wife's statement The brothers had been heading to the Spanish port of Santander so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training. Their funeral took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. Rute made her first statement following his death on the one month anniversary of their wedding, posting three pictures from their big day, including a close up of the pair holding hands. She captioned the post: "1 month of our 'until death do us part'."

'Yours forever' - Diogo Jota's wife's heartbreaking posts after Liverpool icon's tragic death

'Yours forever' - Diogo Jota's wife's heartbreaking posts after Liverpool icon's tragic death Rute Cardoso has kept a low profile since the death of her husband Diogo Jota and brother-in-law Andre Silva, yet she is expected to be at Anfield on Friday as Liverpool host Bournemouth The late Diogo Jota, with his wife Rute Cardoso, and their three children (Image: Instagram) Liverpool's Premier League game against Bournemouth on Friday night is set to be an emotional affair, following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, just over a month ago. ‌ Anfield will also welcome Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children for Liverpool's first league fixture of the new season. Jota and his brother sadly lost their lives in a car accident near Zamora in Spain on July 3, leaving the football community in a state of mourning. ‌ Rute, who started dating Jota in 2013 and married him just 11 days before his untimely death, has largely chosen to grieve privately and has not spoken publicly since the devastating incident. ‌ Here, Wales Online provides a detailed look at the tributes Cardoso has made, as she prepares for her return to Anfield. Attending Anfield While Reds fans will be delighted to see the Premier League champions back in action, the occasion will also be an emotional one for those inside Anfield and watching on TV, reports the Mirror. Liverpool boss Arne Slot has confirmed in his programme notes that Rute and her three children, Dinis, Duarte and the youngest child, whose name has not been shared publicly, will be in the stands to watch Liverpool's opener. Article continues below "I believe that Diogo's wife, his children and his family will be in attendance," Slot wrote. "And it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always." A moment of silence will also be held at all Premier League matches this weekend, with players wearing black armbands. Messages and images will also be shown on the big screens in stadiums for the late Liverpool forward. Anfield floral tribute Rute has visited Anfield before, following the deaths of Jota and Andre Silva. On July 11, Rute and relatives of Jota and Andre Silva were joined by the Liverpool team as they toured the countless floral displays laid in remembrance of the siblings. ‌ Diogo Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, visited the floral tribute to her late husband in Liverpool (Image: Getty) Liverpool FC's official Instagram page shared photographs from the visit. The caption read: "Our squad and staff paid their respects to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva at Anfield today, alongside members of the brothers' family." Helping pallbearers at the funeral The joint funeral service for Jota and Andre Silva took place on July 5 in Gondomar, Portugal. Family members, friends and teammates, past and present, were in attendance. ‌ Ruben Neves was one of the pallbearers at Jota and Andre Silva's funeral as Rute Cardoso struggled with her emotions (Image: Getty Images) The caskets were brought into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church. Overwhelmed by sorrow yet determined to assist, Rute was clearly in an intensely emotional condition whilst helping the coffin bearers with the brothers' caskets. This followed her journey with Jota's body back to Gondomar, prior to the funeral. Jota and Rute first met in Gondomar as teenagers, and she wanted to accompany her husband back to where their love story began. ‌ Anniversary post Rute has not yet spoken publicly at length about the loss of her husband and brother-in-law. However, she did share a poignant post on Instagram of her June 22 wedding to Jota. The photos featured a close-up of the couple holding hands, their wedding rings clearly visible. Two other images captured the couple sharing their first dance as man and wife. Translated from Portuguese to English, Rute wrote: "One month of our 'until death do us part'. Forever, Your bride." Her latest social media post The couple frequently used Instagram to express their love for each other. Just days before his passing, Jota posted a video of their wedding day, captioning it: "A day we will never forget." Article continues below Rute Cardoso took to Instagram to share her latest tribute to Jota (Image: RuteCardoso/Instagram) Rute's last Instagram post before her husband's death also centred around their wedding. Ahead of her return to Merseyside, Rute took to the social media platform again, posting a photo of Jota and one of their children at Lake Windermere to her Instagram story. She captioned it: "My perfect kind of birthday", accompanied by two pink hearts. While it's unclear if Friday is Rute's birthday, it shows how she uses the platform to keep her husband's memory very much alive.

Derry Girls star marries Scots DJ Denis Sulta in Irish ceremony with surprise Scottish twist

Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Scots DJ Denis Sulta tied the knot in a three-day wedding celebration in County Kerry attended by her Derry Girls co-star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell. Scots DJ Denis Sulta has tied the knot with Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson in a stunning three-day wedding celebration in Ireland. Sulta, whose real name is Hector Barbour, and the Northern Irish star, best known for playing Erin Quinn in the Channel 4 sitcom, exchanged vows at Dromquinna Manor in County Kerry. ‌ The pair, who have been engaged since Denis' romantic 2023 proposal on Donegal beach, honoured their Celtic roots as they said "I do" in front of their nearest and dearest. Among those in attendance was Saoirse's Derry Girls co-star, Jamie Lee-O'Donnell, better known as Michelle in the show, who was her bridesmaid, and Sulta's mum, Muriel Gray. ‌ Denis and Saoirse were both seen grinning from ear to ear as they celebrated their big day together. The 32-year-old DJ, from Glasgow, was dressed in a full piece kilt in a Hebridean MacKenzie tartan by MacGregor and MacDuff while the Irish star looked sensational in a custom made dress by Annie Doble of Annie's Ibiza, which she described as 'Celtic warrior princess'. ‌ Her dress was made up of a short puffed sleeved corseted bodice with an asymmetric skirt that had a long trail at the back. However, she also made sure to honour her husband's Scottish roots as she surprised him when revealing the gown featured a reversible tartan print. The 31-year-old told Vogue: "We wanted both of our cultures and our families and friends to be at the centre of it." That was not the only surprise thrown in on the day as the actress' dad also changed into a Darth Vader costume in the evening and she arranged a singer dressed as Elphaba from Wicked, as well as an Irish storyteller. ‌ The three-day extravaganza is also said to have featured Irish music, Guinness on tap and photography by Story of Eve with around 160 guests in attendance. Saoirse told the Daily Mail:"Dancing went well into the early hours, we were in bed at 4.30am, but some were out until 7am so there were a few sore heads the next day. ‌ "Then we had buses pick everyone up and take them to a pub down the road, before we headed back and kept partying at the bar!" The This City is Ours star has taken to Instagram to post a series of moments from their wedding weekend as she wrote: "To all our loved ones, you are everything." She also shared her Vogue cover photoshoot of her posing in her wedding dress and enormously high heels. In the weeks before the wedding, Saoirse celebrated her boujee hen do in Montreux, Switzerland with all of her closest friends. Sporting a bride cowboy hat, she wrote on Instagram: "The best weekend with the most gorgeous people. I'm so lucky to have such amazing friends and family. Incredible."
