First-ever recipient of Xaneya Thomas Future Leader Scholarship

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local high school senior is getting help paying for college from an alumna of the program that has meant so much to her. Alexea Oliveri is graduating from Binghamton High School. She is receiving the first-ever Xaneya Thomas Future Leader Scholarship through the Liberty Partnerships Program. Thomas was herself an active member of Liberty Partnerships before graduating from BHS in 2020 and has spent the past four years as a counselor for the program. Liberty Partnerships works locally with Binghamton University to offer at-risk students tutoring, mentoring, and emotional support. They also engage in a wide variety of community service. Thomas says Oliveri has embraced the core mission of the program. 'Her never-ending commitment to social justice and advocacy. I was a firsthand witness to said commitment. Every summer, she showed up, gave it her best, and always stood out from the rest of the students that we worked with and was a leader in that role every single year,' said Thomas. Oliveri has participated in the Liberty Partnership Program since 6th grade and has been active in community service projects such as the Ramp It Up program that builds wheelchair ramps for those in need. She's also volunteered at GiGi's Playhouse and engaged in neighborhood cleanups. Oliveri says Liberty has been like an extended family to her. 'It means a lot because honestly, this whole program I've always known was about giving back, and it's always been giving back to our community. But, seeing somebody who's always been so close to us and plays a huge part in the program giving back directly to the students is a crazy feeling,' said Oliveri. Oliveri plans to attend Jacksonville University this fall to study psychology and criminal justice. Union Pacific Railroad names Tehachapi as ‘Train Town USA'

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KGET) — Move over Thomas, and hold onto your caboose cause it's official: Tehachapi is known as Train Town U.S.A. Peggy YgBuhay with Union Pacific said, ''Union Pacific Railroad does grant Tehachapi, California the title of, 'Train Town USA.' You can clap.'' The Tehachapi Depot is celebrating 15 years since restoring the museum that was destroyed in a fire in July 2008 caused from bottle rockets. Tehachapi Mayor, Joan Pogon-Cord, said, 'My husband, he was a deputy sheriff at that time, told me. It was like a knife to my heart.' It took $2 million to restore the historic building two years later. The biggest draw in Train Town isn't the museum with one heck of a moving exhibit. It's the engineering feat, known as the Tehachapi Loop. V.P. Marlan Woodside with Friends of Tehachapi Depot said, 'The purpose of the loop is to raise the track from a bottom of 77 feet up to the top rail in a distance of 4,000 feet.' Pride runs deep in Tehachapi, and part of that pride is because of the Tehachapi Loop, where up to 40 trains a day make the trek. It's an engineering marvel, and part of the reason why the depot is celebrating 15 years. Founder of Friends of Tehachapi Depot, Doug Prickard said, 'In 2026, it'll be the 150th anniversary of when this track was originally built.' People from all over the world marvel at man's defiance against gravity with this historic track. People even get married at the Tehachapi Loop. Ron & Becky Wilson are train tourists from Oregon. They marvel at the site of the Tehachapi Loop. 'All of a sudden we heard a whistle down the way, and another train came,' said Becky. 'So, made the loop, and then the other one started going and passed each other on the loop. It was really fun.' Up to 10,000 guests a year sign the guest book at the Tehachapi Train Depot. Depot staff say at last report, the museum has seen up to 150,000 visitors. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Slack Tide Fish Co. opens this week in Scott's Addition

Slack Tide Fish Co. opens this Friday in Scott's Addition. Why it matters: The Mid-Atlantic seafood-focused restaurant is the final piece of the Ballast complex, which has been in the works for more than two years. The big picture: Slack Tide, and the complex, are from the owners (and brothers) of Yellow Umbrella Provisions: Thomas and Tucker Brown. The duo tapped award-winning chef Caleb Shriver, formerly of Dutch & Co. restaurant (RIP), to lead the kitchen and menu and then another award winner, Steve Yang, to helm the cocktail list. The restaurant joins Yellow Umbrella Provisions' third local market location and Cirrus Vodka's new tasting room in the one-time city stable turned cidery. Flashback: A decade ago, the now Ballast complex was one of the hottest real estate deals of the year. The circa 1940, city-owned cobblestone structure, which once housed mules and public works staff, had been vacant since the 1990s when the city started soliciting offers for the property. In 2015, the city announced that Blue Bee Cider would get the Scott's Addition spot for the then-assessed price of $395,000. Seven years later, the then-Blue Bee owner sold the building to its current owner — for $2.9 million. (In 2022, it was assessed at $1.6 million, per BizSense). On the menu: Large and medium plates like a whole vermillion snapper, soft shell crab and andouille risotto, a smash burger, smoked trout and churros and "the broken egg," eggs with, jamon iberico, potato chips, soubise and trout roe ($10-$42). If you go: Slack Tide is at 1320 Summit Ave. and open Tuesday-Friday, 4-10pm and Saturday, noon-10pm.
