Main accused still absconding days after 14-year-old girl gang-raped at Ghaziabad home: Police

Indian Express7 days ago
Three days after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside her flat in Ghaziabad, police on Wednesday said that the main accused is still absconding. Two of the four accused, who were apprehended on Tuesday, are both 19, and they have been formally arrested, officers added.
According to an official statement issued by the Ghaziabad Police, both the teenagers were apprehended from the Industrial Area Police Post on Tuesday, below the Mehrouli Underpass. 'Following the registration of the FIR on Monday under relevant sections, a team was formed, and based on CCTV footage and local intelligence, police arrested the two accused,' read the statement. Earlier, police had said that all four accused were believed to be minors.
'Both the arrested accused are residents of Ghaziabad, and are around 19 years of age,' the statement read.
Meanwhile, an officer said that the girl was yet to record her statement before the magistrate. 'She was to record her statement on Tuesday, but we could not do that because of her poor health,' the officer said, adding that the medical examination report of the girl is also awaited.
According to the girl's father, who filed the police complaint with the Ghaziabad Police on Sunday, she received a call from one of the accused when her mother had gone to a nearby market to buy groceries. She was alone at home when the incident happened, he said.
'She received a call on Instagram from a boy who had been texting her on social media for the last two days. He told her that he was coming to the flat to meet her,' the complaint stated.
The girl's father further alleged that when his daughter opened the door, the four accused forcibly dragged her inside the room by covering her mouth with their hands and raped her by taking turns.
The senior officers involved in the investigation further told The Indian Express that, prima facie, it appeared that the girl knew the main accused as they studied in the same school. 'The accused knew the girl, and the other boys allegedly reached there later, after the main accused called them. We are still investigating the case and will apprehend the main accused,' said the officer, adding that the gangrape allegations are under investigation.

Tanushree Dutta To NDTV: "No Scope Of Justice In Maharashtra, Molesters Hobnob With Politicians"

Actor Tanushree Dutta, who was at the forefront of India's #MeToo movement, has claimed that she is being stalked, harassed, and psychologically targeted for years, and has not received any help from authorities. On late Tuesday night, the former Miss India Universe posted a disturbing video of her crying on Instagram, alleging that she has been "harassed at my own home" for the past five years, so much so that her "health has deteriorated". Tanushree Dutta told NDTV in an exclusive interaction that she has been facing relentless harassment and intimidation over the past few years, both in public and private spaces, and has been left disillusioned with the system meant to protect her. Speaking in the wake of her distressing Instagram video she posted, the actor claimed to have noticed a pattern of incidents that she said have taken a toll on her mental and physical health. "My experience with the Mumbai Police during the 2018 MeToo movement left a very bitter taste in my mouth," she told NDTV. "They encouraged me to file an FIR back then. I spent four to five hours at the station, gave a detailed statement, and kept following up and nothing came of it. In Maharashtra, these molesters and harassers are often hobnobbing with politicians. They're protected. So, there's no real scope of justice." Tanushree Dutta, known for films such as Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Chocolate, Bhagam Bhag, and Dhol, also alleged that her ordeal hasn't stopped since. She said she suspects that even hotel staff and insiders may have been complicit in stalking and intimidation during her travels. "Whenever I raised the issue at hotels during my pilgrimages, I was either stonewalled or met with excuses. I didn't want drama. I had gone to pray, meditate, and heal. But the incidents followed me everywhere." She claimed food deliveries would arrive tampered with, groceries would be misplaced or opened, packages would be meddled with and there seemed to be a deliberate attempt to destabilise her. "It's psychological warfare," she says. "They're trying to scare me. And it's been happening since I came back from one trip so unwell that I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, triggered by prolonged stress and anxiety." According to Tanushree Dutta, in multiple cities, at different hotels, someone would use a spare key to enter her room. "Whether I was in the room or not, they'd come in, move small things, steal just enough to make me notice. They wanted me to know I wasn't safe even in what should be a private, protected space." Now, she said, the pattern has reached her Mumbai home. "People bang on my door at odd hours. They've left foul-smelling substances outside. I've reported it to my building society many times. Yesterday, when it happened again and no one responded to my calls I broke down. I called the police. They came, spoke to the watchman, but it was all vague, everyone blaming each other. They asked me to visit the Oshiwara Police Station and speak to a senior officer. I said I will but only if they are willing to act. I won't waste more years chasing justice that never comes." Tanushree Dutta's 2018 allegations against veteran actor Nana Patekar helped spark the #MeToo movement in Bollywood. The actor has been away from the world of films since the 2010 movie Apartment, but has kept fans and followers updated about her life through her Instagram page. The latest series of alleged revelations made by the actor, however, indicate that the aftermath of that decision and the fight for accountability is far from over.

‘Give us back last 20 years': Son of Mumbai blasts accused, who died in jail 4 years before acquittal

Abdullah Ansari was six years old when his father, Kamal Ahmed Mohammad Vakil Ansari, was arrested from Basopatti in Bihar's Madhubani district after being accused of involvement in the Mumbai train blasts of July 11, 2006, in which 189 people were killed. 'I don't remember much… At that age, children just about know how to walk properly,' he told The Indian Express on Tuesday. On Monday, nearly two decades after his father's arrest, the Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 men convicted in the case. This included a posthumous acquittal for Kamal Ansari, who died in jail in 2021 at the age of 50. 'The only thing I want to say is, give us back the last 20 years… Only we know what we went through during these years,' said Abdullah, who last met his father in 2017. He said the High Court judgment came too late. 'What was meant to be wrapped up by the MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) court in two-four years dragged on for much longer, and then it took another decade in the High Court. My father died in jail.' According to official records, Kamal Ansari died of Covid at Nagpur Central Jail in 2021, during the height of the pandemic. 'What happened was wrong, not just to my father but also to the others whose lives were destroyed by this process. Can anyone give back those 20 years to us, or to the 11 other families that also suffered?' Abdullah said. In July 2006, 189 people were killed and 824 injured in a series of blasts that ripped through seven Mumbai local train coaches. Kamal Ansari had been accused of receiving arms training in Pakistan, ferrying Pakistani terrorists across the Indo-Nepal border, and helping plant explosives that detonated at Matunga station in Mumbai. However, his son said Kamal was a worker trying to make ends meet by doing odd jobs in Madhubani and nearby areas. In 2015, a special MCOCA court sentenced Kamal Ansari and four others to death on charges of organised crime, criminal conspiracy, spreading terror and murder, under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Explosives Substances Act, 1908, MCOCA, and Railways Act, 1989. After his father's arrest, Abdullah said that 'his mother and three brothers endured severe financial hardship'. The eldest among the siblings, Abdullah now works in a private company in Delhi, as does his brother Obedullah. Another brother, Abdul, works in Darbhanga, while the youngest, Sufian, is still studying.
