Manushi Chillar slams ‘misogynistic mindset' towards women in film industry where they are labelled gold diggers

Hindustan Times4 days ago

Manushi Chillar has spoken on the perception towards women in the entertainment industry, stating that they are often 'discussed with such disrespect and contempt'. Taking to her X account on Saturday, Manushi called out the misogynistic attitudes that prevail in the industry. (Also read: Kangana Ranaut says 'politics is kinder to older women than film industry' as she talks about joy of ageing)
Without naming anyone in the industry or talking about a specific incident, Manushi began in her X post, 'A misogynistic mindset finds it easier to attribute a woman's success to a man's patronage than her own merit. I've always really ignored silly comments which have no consequence in the real world, but I constantly see working women, specially in the entertainment industry being discussed with such disrespect and contempt.'
She went on to add, "I grew up in an empowered, educated environment where irrespective of gender, we all had equal value to add. But I have also been exposed to this mentality of 'men are hardworking and talented if successful, whereas women and opportunists, gold diggers or manipulators' Is it as simple as 'if you hear something bad about a woman, it's from a female who can't be her or a male who can't have her'. Or is there a deep rooted bias?
Manushi won Miss World in 2017 and then made her acting debut in Bollywood through the historical drama Samrat Prithviraj opposite Akshay Kumar. It underperformed at the box office and received negative reviews. She then went on to do projects such as The Great Indian Family opposite Vicky Kaushal, and Operation Valentine. She was last seen in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which also starred Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff and Alaya F. The film emerged as a box office failure. She will be seen next in the film Tehran, alongside John Abraham.

Madras HC seeks explanation from CBFC for denying censor certificate to Vetrimaaran's 'Manushi': 'Filmmakers are already suffering from a lot of difficulties'

The Madras High Court has raised strong concerns over the Central Board of Film Certification 's (CBFC) refusal to grant clearance to the Tamil film 'Manushi'. It has questioned the board's failure to clearly identify which parts of the film were deemed objectionable. Madras HC sought explanation The issue reached the court after acclaimed filmmaker Vetrimaaran filed a petition on Tuesday (June 3) . According to The Hindu, he challenged the CBFC's decision to withhold certification for 'Manushi', a film he produced and which was directed by filmmaker N. Gopi Nainar. Vetrimaaran argued that the board had not provided any clarity on which specific scenes, dialogues, visuals, or musical elements were problematic. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, who presided over the matter, expressed concern about the opaque process followed by the CBFC. 'Making a movie is a part of the right to speech and expression. As such, the filmmakers are already suffering from a lot of difficulties. You cannot deny certification for an entire movie without specifying the objectionable portions and expect a filmmaker to shoot the entire movie afresh,' the judge reportedly said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo The court observed that unless the CBFC clearly listed the scenes it found offensive, the filmmaker would be left in the dark and risk incurring heavy financial losses due to re-shoots or delays. Court's order to CBFC The CBFC has now been asked to either submit a detailed list of the objectionable parts of 'Manushi' or arrange a screening with Vetrimaaran and indicate the scenes that require changes. The deadline for this has been set for June 16. During the hearing, it was conveyed to the court that both the examining and revising committees of the CBFC had unanimously recommended withholding certification. Their objections reportedly included allegations that the film challenged the integrity of the state, contained contemptuous content, criticised government policies, perpetuated stereotypes contributing to a north-south divide, and depicted scenes allegedly against national interests. Vetrimaaran talks about Nitish Veera in an emotional video In response to these assertions, the judge asked the CBFC to file an explanation by June 11. About Manushi 'Manushi', starring Andrea Jeremiah in the lead, also features Nasser, Tamizh, Hakkim Shah, and Balaji Sakthivel in pivotal roles. Housefull 5 India Advance Booking Update: Akshay Kumar's comic caper to sell in the vicinity of 40000 tickets in top chains with a day to go

Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 is gearing up for its big release on June 6, 2025. The advance bookings for the comic caper kicked off a few days ago and here is how the bookings are in India's top multiplex chains, PVRInox and Cinepolis. As of 10 PM on June 4, the film has sold 37,000 tickets. By the end of the day, Housefull 5 is expected to hit 40,000 tickets. With just one day left, the makers are hoping for a massive surge to reach at least 100,000 tickets in these chains. The advance bookings for the Akshay Kumar starrer started on June 1. Initially, the target was to sell 125,000 to 150,000 tickets in PVRInox and Cinepolis. However, the pace has been slower than expected. As of now, the film is aiming for a more realistic 100,000 tickets by Thursday night. This would set the stage for a respectable opening day collection of Rs 20 crore net in India. While Rs 20 crore is a not exactly a bad start, a film of Housefull 5's scale, boasting a Rs 225 crore budget, needs a bigger opening to make waves. A Rs 25-30 crore start would be ideal, but you take what you get. Outside the top chains, the booking trend is stronger. Chains like Rajhans, MovieMax, and Miraj are seeing better pre-sales. This suggests that Housefull 5 could see good walk-in numbers on release day, especially in smaller towns. The weekend bookings looks promising. Advance bookings for Saturday (Bakri Eid) and Sunday are picking up strongly. Family audiences are expected to turn up in big numbers, boosting the film's prospects. If the comedy lands well and the murder-mystery intrigue around the dual climaxes clicks, Housefull 5 could see a big jump over the weekend. Financially, Housefull 5 is in a strong position. The film has already recovered nearly 60 percent of its budget, that is around Rs 135 crore, through non-theatrical sources like satellite rights, digital streaming, and music deals. This gives the makers a safety net. To break even, the film needs to gross Rs 275 crore worldwide. To be declared a hit, it must cross Rs 325 crore globally. With a massive release across 5,000 screens in India, the stage is set for a big theatrical run. The unique strategy of releasing two versions with different climaxes should spark discussions after the release. This could possibly also drive repeat viewings, adding to the box office haul. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 features a star-studded cast that also includes Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jacqueline Fernandez among others. The franchise's brand value and the promise of a laugh riot on a luxury cruise are key draws. With good international pre-sales and a holiday weekend ahead, Housefull 5 is poised for a reasonable global start.

Housefull 5 advance booking: Akshay Kumar and gang to see opening with over ₹6 crore, almost 1 lakh tickets sold

Housefull 5 advance booking: Akshay Kumar and his gang are all set to return to the big screen with Sajid Nadiawala's Housefull 5. The much-anticipated film has become a murder thriller this time with multiple endings, featuring multiple killers. It is said to be released on June 6. Ahead of its release, the advance bookings have predicted the fate of Housefull 5. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 has so far sold 96,304 tickets for 11,700 shows across India in all formats. It has collected ₹ 2.85 crore from its ticket sales. Considering blocked seats, Housefull 5 is set to premiere with ₹ ₹ 6.87 crore gross earnings. Regions like Maharashtra and the Delhi NCR dominated the list with maximum revenue of ₹ 1.62 crore and ₹ 1.24 crore respectively from first-day advance booking. Gujarat is right behind them with a revenue of ₹ 64.36 lakh on the list, followed by Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad have the highest number of screenings of the film. It is believed that the film, the fifth installment in the franchise, will have the widest release with over 5,000 screenings in India alone, as per reports. Housefull 5 will clash with the Hindi version of Kamal Haasan's Thug Life which will be released a day ahead of Housefull 6's opening. It will also clash with Maddock Films' Bhool Chuk Maaf, featuring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. Meanwhile, film trade analysts are yet to share the early predictions for Housefull 5. The film features an ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Johny Lever and the leading ladies Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa and Soundarya Sharma. Housefull 5 is billed as the most expensive installment of the Housefull series, and also the most expensive comedy film in India. The film's total budget is to be around ₹ 225 crore, without print and advertisement costs, suggested reports. However, the makers had shared earlier that the film was initially set with a budget of ₹ 350 crore. The budget came down after going through casting changes. It is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under his production banner Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.
