Truecaller launches new ‘Scamfeed' feature designed to crowdsource scam alerts
The user-powered feed will act as an early warning system, helping others recognise and avoid similar scams, the company said in a press release on April 29, 2025. Scamfeed is now live in India and will be rolled out globally in the coming months. It is directly available within the Truecaller app.
According to Truecaller, users can post anonymously on Scamfeed if they prefer. They can also attach images, screenshots, and videos to their posts. In addition, users can also comment, ask questions, and share posts from Scamfeed to other platforms like WhatsApp.
'The power of community is key in fighting scams. Scamfeed uses the knowledge and experiences of our users in India to create a safer space for everyone. By learning from each other, people can stay one step ahead of fraudsters,' Tonmoy Goswami, Product Director of New Initiatives at Truecaller, said.
This new offering is aimed at transforming Truecaller into a real-time scam alert tool. Users can quickly check Scamfeed to see if a phone number has been reported by others, and find out what signs to look for in a possible scam, as per the company.
In March this year, Truecaller launched a new AI-powered tool called 'Max' that helps detect and block spam. The feature is currently available within the Android version of the app for Truecaller premium subscribers, and it works by blocking calls that are not from your list of approved contacts.
Truecaller has been around since 2009, when it was introduced on all platforms, including iOS.
'At the time, there was no native support for Caller ID on iOS. What we were doing was a workaround through which we were providing some sort of spam detection. Over the years, we continued to use different workarounds to provide the same value users expected from Truecaller. The expectation was simple: if I get a spam call, please let me know or block it for me,' Nakul Kabra, product director-iOS at Truecaller, told indianexpress.com in an interview earlier this month.

Dating app investment scam: Man loses ₹13.3 lakh
A 41-year-old Begumpet resident was allegedly duped of ₹13.3 lakh in an investment scam that originated through a dating app, Happn. The victim was initially contacted by a woman identifying herself as 'Chandhini Chowdary', who later shifted the conversation to WhatsApp. Claiming to be an advisor to a trading analyst at Optinex Markets, she persuaded the man to register on the website and make investments in trading. The victim first invested ₹50,000 via IMPS, received a small profit, and successfully withdrew the amount, which built his trust in the platform. Over time, the woman encouraged him to make progressively larger investments, ultimately depositing ₹8,00,000. The platform showed fabricated profits to maintain the illusion of legitimacy. When the victim attempted to withdraw his funds, the account was frozen, and he was instructed to pay more to unfreeze it. Under pressure, the man transferred an additional ₹5,31,000, followed by ₹4,55,991, the latter purportedly for taxes, to release his money. In total, he lost ₹13,31,000 to the fraudsters. The victim lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime wing of the Hyderabad police. A case was booked and a probe is on. Police have advised investors to exercise caution and verify the credentials of trading platforms before making financial commitments, particularly when approached through social or dating apps.

Pre-booking for NH annual toll pass at Rs 3,000 begins
CHENNAI: Pre-bookings have been opened for the Annual Toll Pass (ATP), priced at Rs 3,000, offering motorists up to 200 single trips through NHAI-maintained toll plazas on national highways, starting August 15. The ATP pre-booking was enabled through the RajmargYatra mobile app (Android only) on Wednesday and the same will be allowed through other iOS and official NHAI portal from Thursday onwards. This facility is exclusive to private vehicles – cars, vans, and jeeps – with valid FASTag accounts. The average toll per crossing under the ATP comes to about Rs 15, and the annual pass will reduce user fee expenses for private vehicles by approximately 75%-80%. The pass is valid for one year from the activation date or until 200 trips are completed, whichever comes first. Once either limit is reached, the pass automatically reverts to a regular FASTag. Requests for ATP activation can be placed through the app, and passes will be activated on August 15. If the 200 trips are used up within a few months, motorists may purchase and activate another ATP via the app. TN has 74 toll plazas on NHs, with an average daily collection of Rs 3 crore to Rs 14 crore.
