EastEnders star explains missing Phil Mitchell actor after big Soap Awards win

Daily Mirror06-06-2025
Adam Woodyatt was on hand to collect his EastEnders co-star Steve McFadden's much-deserved win at the British Soap Awards after the Phil Mitchell actor was missing
Soap Awards winner Steve McFadden, who plays EastEnders legend Phil Mitchell, missed the ceremony on Saturday night when it took place.
As ITV1 aired the big awards on Thursday 5 June, it was his co-star Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale, who accepted the award on his behalf. Actor Steve doesn't always attend the big events, but this time fans were expecting to see him as he secured the trophy for Best Dramatic Performance at the British Soap Awards 2025.

So when actor Adam went up on stage on his behalf, it emerged Steve was not there to celebrate his deserved win. That said, Adam quickly explained the icon's absence, with him taking some time away after such a heavy storyline.

Emotional scenes earlier this year, starting late last year, saw his character Phil struggling with his mental health. Events reached breaking point when Phil suffered from psychosis and suicidal thoughts, with him sadly making an attempt to end his life.
The portrayal earned actor Steve huge praise after his more than three decades on the show, from cast and viewers. Now he's gone all the way and got the award, but sadly despite "wanting to be there" he couldn't be.
Adam explained to the audience that Steve was on holiday after months of filming the tough storyline. In his absence, Adam collected the award and gave an epic speech that moved fans.
He said, after appearing to say to the award presenters: "Holiday, holiday," that Steve had been "nervous" about getting the storyline right. He also said, and his cast agreed, that it had been a long time coming for Steve to win the award.
Adam shared on the stage: "Obviously I am not Steve McFadden. Steve is on a very well deserved holiday. He would have loved to have been here."

Turning to his co-stars in their seats, Adam went on: "For us, isn't it about time he won this? Steve for 35 years has been the most consistent brilliant colleague.
"He has been off the scale. I was in the green room with him before he started this storyline, and Steve was nervous. You would think after all the things that Steve has done over all this time, and he was nervous.

"I asked him come on mate, what is this about? And he said, 'I just want to get it right'. And I went, you've got it right mate!" With that he raided the trophy in the air, gesturing that it as proof he'd done good and had nothing to worry about.
With that the crowd erupted into applause and Adam left the stage. Viewers were thrilled for the actor, taking to X to share their thoughts on his big win. One fan posted: "THE BEST ACTOR IN THE SOAP INDUSTRY FULL STOP!!!! AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!"
Another fan said: "SO SO happy for Steve McFadden. What a legend." A third fan wrote: "About time, congratulations to Steve McFadden."

Emmerdale hints at shock triple exit as killer John 'ties up loose end'

John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is a very stressed man in Emmerdale. Just a few weeks ago, he conjured up a plan that saw him frame another character for Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) murder. John hoped that framing Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) would give Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) some closure. He arrived at Owen's and found him unconscious after taking drugs, and then wrote a fake note on Owen's laptop while the man's life slipped away from him. The note confirmed that Owen killed Nate so when the police found this and his body, it was pretty much confirmation that Nate's case would be closed soon. Cain and Tracy reeled in the aftermath, but they have spent time trying to come to terms with the development. Yesterday though, the emotions were brought up once more when DC Cole arrived with some news. The detective told Cain that the police aren't sure if Owen killed Nate and in tonight's episode, we learnt they had this theory because Owen's suicide note saved on his computer after his time of death. As John listened to DC Cole tell Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) this, he couldn't help but let his stress levels increase. John arrived back at the flat and ranted to Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). He said that all he's done since arriving in the village is 'give, give, give' and no-one has bothered to return the favour for him. Aaron felt bad as he listened to John, but the medic was unaware his husband was also feeling guilty after sleeping with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) yesterday. With Aaron still believing that he's meant to be with John, he suggested that the two of them leave – for longer than a little holiday. Aaron and John confirmed in the pub a while later that they would be going away for a short break, but intend on turning it into a more permanent thing if they like the area. Aaron told Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and the news was hard to hear for her, as she loves having her son around. Behind John and Aaron were Tracy, Liam and Cain sitting in a booth. Liam was supporting Cain and Tracy, who were discussing Nate's killer potentially still lurking somewhere. John had overheard this and knew he needed to take action. He made a call and told someone on the other end that he needs some help to tie up a loose end. With John and Aaron keen on departing, another exit is potentially on the cards for Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb). Rumours are currently circulating that John will kill Mackenzie after he discovers the truth about him. A source told us: 'The John story has so many twists and turns to come and this will come as a genuine surprise to fans. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? 'Mack has survived quite a lot over the years but his time is well and truly up this time. More Trending 'What his exit does is set the stage for an exciting next stage to John's saga later in the autumn that will leave fans quite literally on edge.' A trailer has also been revealed that shows John lifting a huge rock up in the air, presumably preparing to hit Mack with it. Molly Rainford And Tyler West: A Complete Relationship Timeline

The Strictly curse has been broken! That's thanks to the news that Strictly stars Molly Rainford and Tyler West are engaged, three years after meeting on the show. West popped the question on a romantic trip to Mykonos, and shared an emotional video of the moment online. In the video, he says 'I don't know where to start – so I'm hoping you can continue making me the luckiest man on this Earth, like you do every single day,' before asking Molly to marry him - to which she says yes. In the caption on the video, he wrote 'Found our forever.' Here's everything you need to know about this Strictly romance success story.... Eastenders star Molly and Radio DJ Nick were both contestants on the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing. Molly succeeded on the show, making it to the final with professional dancer Carlos Gu, before the trophy went to Hamza Yassin and his partner Jowita Przystal. Tyler was partnered with pro Dianne Buswell, and the pair were booted out halfway through the contest. The pair actually started out as friends. Rainford told OK: 'Everyone thinks that we got together on the show, but we didn't. It kind of happened after but what's so lovely is that we kind of built a little friendship,' continuing 'I think because it stems from such a cool friendship into something more, that's what makes it so cool. He's a good boy. I'm very lucky.' Molly spoke to Fabulous magazine about her budding romancer with Tyler, revealing they grew close near the end of the tour. 'I suppose it developed towards the end of the tour because we'd spent so much time together and we were really good friends,' she told the outlet. 'The tour was so much fun. We were just doing everything together and it just progressed from there really.' She also said it was Tyler who asked her out once the tour had finished. 'He was like, 'Do you think when we get back, we could go on a date?' and I was like, 'Yeah, alright!' I was totally up for it,' she said. 'Everyone on Strictly was so excited for us. They kind of wanted it to happen [all the way through the show] and we were like, "No, we are trying to be professional."' In fact, Tyler even pinpointed the moment he knew it was love with Molly, which was on the Newcastle tour. 'The minute I'd leave Molly, I'd miss her,' he said. 'When you both feel it, you just know,' said Molly. In January 2024, Molly and Nic took the step of moving in together. 'We are good and going strong and are actually moving in together - we're just going through, you know dining tables and sofas and all that kind of stuff, it's exciting,' she told Mail Online at the time. Tyler also said: 'Molly's turned into a whole interior designer so I'm just taking a complete back seat!' Wedding bells are on the cards after Tyler popped the question on a trip to Mykonos at sunset, with the couple sharing the adorable moment in a video on Instagram. Naturally, friends were quick to offer their congratulations to the couple. Strictly: It Takes Two host Fleur East called it 'the most beautiful proposal' while JLS star Marvin Humes penned 'Wow... this is a lot. Couldn't be happier for two incredible people who are just perfect for eachother... I'm SO happy!!! Ah man this has made my night... congrats family...'
