BJP realises its ‘triple-engine sarkar' dreams as Raja Iqbal Singh becomes Delhi mayor

The Print25-04-2025

In the mayoral elections on Friday, Raja Iqbal Singh secured 133 of the total 142 votes, and his opponent and Congress candidate Mandeep received eight votes.
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Raja Iqbal Singh is the new mayor of Delhi, with the BJP reclaiming power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after a gap of three years.
The BJP ruled over the MCD from 2007 to 2022. As the civic body split into three between 2012 and 2022, the party went on to hold power over three separate corporations, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).
On 22 May 2022, the BJP-led Union government unified the three corporations. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged victorious in the 2022 civic body elections.
Soon after his election, Raja Iqbal Singh said that the primary goal of the BJP-led MCD would be to improve Delhi's sanitation system.
'We will ensure the removal of the mountains of garbage; we will also solve the waterlogging problems and provide all basic and necessary facilities to the people of Delhi. We will all work together, with full dedication, and work hard,' he told the media.
Before the election, AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said that AAP had decided not to field a candidate this time. 'BJP should elect its own Mayor; BJP should form its own standing committee and rule Delhi without any excuses,' he told media persons.
Speaking to ThePrint, Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva said the party's responsibility has increased, but the BJP would ensure Delhi sees 'only development' now.
'Our responsibility has increased. It is a triple-engine government now. Right from the Centre, state, and municipal level today, the BJP is in power. Over the past two years, corruption has increased at the municipal level under the AAP. Now, we have to ensure development. The Delhi government and the MCD will work in tandem and get all the support required from the Centre,' said Virendraa Sachdeva.
'With the election of a BJP mayor and deputy mayor in the MCD, the way has been paved for the smooth functioning of the corporation's administration and citizen services. The new mayor will soon initiate the formation of the MCD standing committee (highest decision-making body) so that once again, financial and administrative decisions follow the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957,' he added.
'To this end, the newly elected mayor will ensure the swift formation of the MCD standing committee so that the people of Delhi can start experiencing the benefits of a 'triple-engine' government as soon as possible,' he said.
According to a BJP leader, though it is a 'triple-engine' government, the focus will also be on the party's performance now.
'Waterlogging and ensuring clean air will have to be our priority. It would get difficult. AAP will try to shift the blame squarely on us now because we have a BJP government at the Centre, state and municipal levels. We would have to ensure we do our bit,' he said.
While the BJP earlier nominated Raja Iqbal Singh as its nominee for the mayoral post, it nominated Jai Bhagwan for the deputy mayor post.
Bhagwan was elected unopposed after the Congress nominee withdrew his candidacy.
The current strength of the MCD is 238. Since the election of some councillors to the assembly, 12 seats have been vacant.
Of the 250 seats, the BJP has 113, up from 104 in 2022. The AAP has only 116, down from 134. The Congress has eight. One councillor is Independent.
The electoral college for the mayoral election includes 238 councillors, 10 MPs (seven from the Lok Sabha and three from the Rajya Sabha), and 14 MLAs.
Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta had nominated 11 BJP and three AAP MLAs as the electors this time.
The BJP lost the MCD after 15 years in 2022, when the AAP bagged 134 of 250 wards. At the time, the BJP won 104 wards, the Congress nine, and the Independents three.

Nearly 300 illegal Bangladeshis pushed back from Assam, says CM Himanta Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that his government has pushed back nearly 300 illegal Bangladeshis to the neighbouring country in the past few months. Addressing a one-day special session of the state assembly, Sarma said that the process to push them back will continue as per provisions of a 1950 law to identify and evict illegal foreigners. 'We will adopt two roads to deal with illegal foreigners. One is to take their cases to foreigners tribunals and the other to use provisions of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950,' Sarma said. 'We have pushed back almost 300 people till now and none of them have returned. This process will be intensified and way fundamentalist elements from Bangladesh have taken roots in Assam, the government needs to be more active and proactive in this regard,' he added. Sarma stated that his government has decided to enforce provisions of the 1950 Act into action and empower district commissioners to identify and push back illegal Bangladeshis without referring to the foreigners tribunals. Assam has 100 such tribunals where people deemed to be illegal foreigners and who have entered the state after March 25, 2025 (the deadline set to identify illegal immigrants in the state) are referred to and their cases heard. Once they are declared as foreigners by these tribunals they are sent to detention centres set up for such illegal foreigners. They have the option of appealing their cases in higher courts with proper documents. In recent weeks, following directives from the union home ministry, several state governments, especially those ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have started drives to detect illegal Bangladeshis and initiate a process to deport them. Many such people, who are allegedly illegal Bangladeshis, have been pushed back to the no man's land between India and Bangladesh through the borders in Assam, Tripura and West Bengal. Last week, Bangladesh had refused to accept 14 such people from Assam, who were again sent back.

LDF, UDF continue blame game over boy's tragic death

The tragic electrocution of 15-year-old Ananthu from an illegal electric trap set for wild boars at Vazhikkadavu dominated the Nilambur Assembly byelection campaign for the second consecutive day on Monday with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) taking out protest marches to different centres. In a bid to gain political mileage from the tragedy, both of them blamed each other for the tragic accident. The LDF staged a protest outside the Vazhikkadavu panchayat office, while the UDF organised a march to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office at Vazhikkadavu, each trying to pin the responsibility on the other. The UDF pointed fingers at the KSEB, arguing that it was its responsibility to prevent power theft for illegal activities such as electric trapping of wild boars. The LDF countered that the onus lay with the local body. The blame game intensified with the UDF targeting the LDF-led State government and its agencies while the LDF targeted the UDF-ruled local body. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A. Vijayaraghavan, inaugurating the LDF march, attributed the incident to the failure of the Vazhikkadavu panchayat administration, stating that it had not implemented the existing protocol to cull wild animals causing crop damage. Mr. Vijayaraghavan accused the panchayat of colluding with those involved in illegally hunting wild boars. He said the UDF's efforts to make political capital out of the tragedy had boomeranged. K. Radhakrishnan, MP, CPI leader Satyan Mokeri, Alice Mathew, M.M. Varghese, V.P. Sanu, E. Jayan, T.M. Siddique, Jamsheer K., and M.T. Ali spoke. Inaugurating the UDF march, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the incident exposed the negligence of government departments. 'Ananthu's family and several other local residents had complained to the KSEB and the Forest department about the electricity theft for hunting wild animals, but no action was taken. It is a clear case of government negligence,' he said. Mr. Satheesan lashed out at the government for its inaction. 'The LDF's march to the panchayat office is a farce. The government does not provide funds for culling wild boars. Instead of blaming the panchayat, the LDF should protest outside the offices of the Forest and Electricity Ministers,' he said. UDF panchayat chairman Saidalavi Valassery presided over the function. A.K.M. Ashraf, Anvar Sadath, MLAs, Congress district president V.S. Joy and Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji spoke.

Modi government weakened autonomy of constitutional institutions in past 11 years: Congress

The past 11 years of the Narendra Modi government has dealt a deep blow to the country's social fabric, democracy and economy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Monday (June 9, 2025). In a post on X, Mr. Kharge alleged, 'The Modi government has wasted the last 11 years in smearing the ink of dictatorship on every page of the Constitution'. 'The BJP-RSS has weakened every constitutional institution and attacked their autonomy,' he added. The Congress chief accused the Modi government of 'stealing people's mandate, toppling governments through the back door, imposing one-party dictatorship and weakening the federal structure'. 'Efforts are constantly being made to spread an environment of hatred, threats and fear,' he added. Mr. Kharge said the exploitation of Dalits, tribals, backwards, minority and weaker sections has increased continuously, Manipur is witnessing unending violence, and the BJP-RSS has made it a habit to keep the country's GDP growth rate at 5-6% from the average of 8% growth. Growing inequality, unemployment, inflation had been the fallout of wrong policies such as demonetisation, wrong GST and unplanned lockdown that affected the unorganised sector, the Congress chief said.. He added that programmes like Make in India, Startup India, Stand up India, Digital India, Namami Gange, and 100 SMART cities had all failed. 'Railways have been ruined. Only the ribbons of the infrastructure painstakingly built by the Congress-UPA have been cut,' Mr. Kharge claimed. Senior leader Rahul Gandhi pointed out how several people lost their lives in an overcrowded local train in Mumbai when the government was busy celebrating its third term. '11 years of Modi government = no accountability, no change, only propaganda. The government has stopped talking about 2025 and is now selling dreams of 2047,' Mr. Gandhi said in a post on X. Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi doesn't hold press conferences. 'Celebrating 11 years but still the Prime Minister remains 'nau do gyarah' from an unscripted and pre-scheduled press conference. Bharat Mandapam is waiting for him,' Mr. Ramesh said, using a Hindi idiom. At a press conference, Rajeev Gowda, who heads the party's research wing, along with spokesperson Mahima Singh, released two booklets, countering the government claims of its achievements. 'The one thing this government has been good at is propaganda and fake news. They are number one in that. It is our job as a responsible Opposition to make sure that the people of India know the grim reality,' Mr. Gowda said.
