BOC collects P84.5 billion, exceeds July 2025 target
In a message to GMA News Online, Nepomuceno said, "We already exceeded the DBCC (Development Budget Coordination Committee) target for July. We're already P84.5 B. Target is P84.36 B. Had there been no suspension of work for 4.5 days last week, our collection surplus is higher."
Nepomuceno said the collection was higher than June 2025 collection of P77.035 billion, adding that it was higher than July 2024 collection of P80.355 billion.
"This is by far the highest collection in a month for this year. Year-on-year, growth is 5.15%, significantly higher than the 1.15% growth for the first semester. This despite the week-long work suspension," Nepomuceno said.
At the start of his leadership, Nepomuceno vowed to enforce good governance in the agency, including meeting collection targets.
The BOC remains aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to professionalize government operations and intensify efforts against smuggling and revenue leakage, he said.
Last year, the bureau collected P931.046 billion in revenues, higher than its 2023 collection of P874.166 billion. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Imee calls for immediate signing of Konektadong Pinoy Bill
Senator Imee Marcos on Tuesday called for the immediate signing of the proposed Konektadong Pinoy Act (KPA), urging the administration to deliver on its commitment of strengthening digital services for all Filipinos. In a press release, Imee cited the remarks of his brother, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., in his fourth State of the Nation Address, saying that "the government must fully embrace digitalization to provide better service to the people, through its vital frontline services and its back-end functions." "If the administration is serious about this commitment, there should be no reason to delay the full passage and implementation of the KPA," Imee said. Imee said the funding for the KPA could be included in the 2026 National Expenditure Program (NEP). "We are already a generation behind in digitalization. Delaying the implementation of the KPA further poses a serious threat to our nation's development. We must allocate funding for it without delay," she said. GMA News Online has asked the Presidential Communications Office for comment on the matter, but it has yet to respond as of posting time. Under the proposed measure, new data transmission players are no longer required to secure a legislative franchise or Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN). The measure, however, has faced criticisms from some groups, including the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO), composed of the country's leading telcos, and the Philippine Association of Private Telecommunications Companies (PAPTELCO). The PCTO had called for a review of the ratified version of the measure, citing national security concerns and weakening of regulatory oversight among new entrants in the country's connectivity service sector. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), for its part, defended the bill, saying that it would never allow deregulation at the expense of security or public interest. Further, the DICT assured that the measure would not weaken the role of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). Lawmakers have urged the DICT to begin drafting the measure's implementing rules and regulations. Meanwhile, Imee also agreed with Philtrust Bank Chairman Hermogenes Esperon's observation that the President had missed an opportunity in his last SONA to discuss plans for improving the digital economy. "Esperon is right. It was a missed opportunity to lay out concrete strategies for growing the digital economy, which has the potential to increase government revenue and help address the country's annual budget deficit," she said. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

BOC collects P84.5 billion, exceeds July 2025 target
Bureau of Customs (BoC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said Friday his office exceeded the collection target for the month of July 2025 after raising P84.5 billion. DFA: Some Pinoys among crew shown in Houthi video
Some Filipino seafarers were among the individuals shown in a video released by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who earlier claimed to have rescued crew members from the cargo vessel Eternity C after sinking it in the Red Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Tuesday. 'Yes, meron,' DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega told GMA News Online in response to a query on whether Filipinos were among those featured in the footage. However, De Vega said the exact number and identities of the Filipinos seen in the video remain unverified as of now. 'Ask DMW [Department of Migrant Workers] for confirmation as to their number or identities. Not all the 11 are Pinoys,' he added. On Monday, the Houthis released video clips and images showing 10 crew members they claim to have 'rescued' from the Eternity C, one of two commercial vessels struck by the rebel group earlier this month. According to the Houthi statement, 11 mariners in total were recovered from the sea, including two who sustained injuries and were provided medical care. One body found aboard the vessel before it sank was also brought to a hospital morgue. The attacks mark a renewed phase in the Houthis' campaign against ships they allege are linked to Israel — a campaign that had paused briefly but has since intensified amid the ongoing war in Gaza. A separate strike also hit another ship, the Magic Seas. EU naval task force Operation Aspides previously reported that 15 of the 25 crew members on the Eternity C remained missing, with four presumed dead. Washington has since accused the Houthis of kidnapping the missing crew, while Human Rights Watch described the attacks and unlawful detention of seafarers as potential war crimes. One Filipino survivor, Cocoy, had earlier recounted his ordeal in an interview, describing the moment a Houthi missile struck the ship. 'Akala ko po mamamatay na ako (I thought I was going to die.),' the seafarer said, noting that he was off-duty and resting in his cabin when the captain's voice boomed over the intercom of the cargo ship: "We are under attack". The July 6 assault on the Greek-owned Magic Seas broke a months-long lull in attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on Red Sea shipping, which began after the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. Crew members scrambled to reach the "muster station" at the center of the ship, considered the safest place should a projectile strike the vessel. GMA News Online has reached out to both the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) for further confirmation, but has yet to receive a response as of posting. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
