Stockbroker loses RM1.24mil to phone scam
GEORGE TOWN: A 47-year-old stockbroker here has lost more than RM1.24 million to a phone scam, prompting renewed warnings from the authorities over the growing threat of impersonation fraud. According to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Northeast district police headquarters, the victim lodged a police report after realising she had been duped into transferring her life savings to scammers posing as law enforcement officers. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victim's ordeal began on June 20, when she received a call from an unknown number. "A woman claiming to be a representative from Pos Laju Malaysia informed the victim of a suspicious parcel allegedly containing her MyKad, ATM card and cheque book. "She was told that the package had been intercepted by police after being sent from Kuching, Sarawak, to Terengganu. "The call was then transferred to a man impersonating a police officer from a Terengganu police station, who told the victim that her bank accounts were under investigation for suspected involvement in money laundering. "She was instructed to transfer all her funds for 'auditing purposes' and assured that the money would be returned once the investigation was completed. "Fearing legal repercussions, the victim complied," he said in a statement. Alwi said that between June 26 and June 30, the woman made 26 online transfers to five different bank accounts provided by the scammers, amounting to RM1,240,100. "The scam only came to light after she confided in her family members, who immediately suspected foul play and urged her to lodge a police report," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property. Alwi again reminded the public to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited phone calls, especially those claiming to be from the authorities or financial institutions.

One motorist detained in North-South Expressway blocking incident
REMBAU: Police have arrested a motorist for traffic obstruction along the southbound carriageway of North-South Expressway near the Pedas-Linggi rest and service area (R&R) here yesterday. The video of the incident, which also involved a few other motorists, had gone viral on social media. Rembau police chief Superintendent Hasani Hussain said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested in Seremban around 12.30am today. "We have arrested one suspect who owns one of the vehicles believed to have blocked traffic on the highway. Efforts are underway to trace the remaining individuals involved. "Initial findings indicated that the individuals were vehicle repossessors attempting to reclaim a car," he said today. The matter is being probed for obstructing public passage, which carries a maximum penalty of one month's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both upon conviction. Hasani said the police took traffic disruptions seriously, especially those that impeded the smooth flow of traffic on highways. "Such behaviour endangers other road users, particularly on high-speed highways. It is not only unlawful but also heightens the risk of fatal accidents," he said.

Five family members granted bail in teen kidnapping case
SEREMBAN: The High Court here today allowed the bail application of five family members charged with kidnapping a 16-year-old girl in April. Their lawyer, T. Harpal Singh, informed Sessions Court judge Datin Surita Budin of the High Court's decision, which was made after a review of the initial bail rejection. On May 14, the Sessions Court had denied bail to the five accused: D. Sasveena, 31; T. Boharaj, 32; Farhin Muhamad Ariffin, 23; and siblings P.K. Koshenn Kumar, 21, and P.K. Siveeshinaa, 23. Harpal said the High Court allowed bail of RM15,000 for each of the accused, with two sureties from among family members. The court also imposed five additional conditions: the accused must surrender their passports to the court and must not contact the victim or any prosecution witnesses. Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni told the court that all documents had been handed over to the defence, except for the closed-circuit television forensic report, the accused's mobile phone analysis, and the victim's medical report. According to the charge, the five allegedly acted in concert to abduct the teenage girl with the intent of demanding a RM2 million ransom. The offence was allegedly committed at 5.45pm on April 10 in front of a hair salon on Jalan S2 B10, Uptown Avenue Seremban 2. They were charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory jail term of not fewer than 30 years and whipping upon conviction. The court set Aug 5 for the next case mention to facilitate document submission. On April 14, it was reported that police shot dead a man in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang, believed to be involved in the kidnapping case.
