Vyttila Mobility Hub redevelopment causes severe inconvenience to commuters

Kochi: The redevelopment work at Vyttila Mobility Hub, which has been ongoing since June, is making daily commuting a nightmare for hundreds who travel by bus, autorickshaw, Metro and Water Metro.

Broken carriageways, leaking roofs and a dearth of basic amenities make the situation dire, be it rain or shine.
It has been months since the interlock tiles were removed, leaving the surface uneven with quarry waste used as a temporary fill. The area becomes waterlogged when it rains and turns dusty when it shines.
The hub, which serves both KSRTC and private buses, is also a critical transit point for passengers heading to Metro and Water Metro stations.
However, they are forced to navigate through dust, mud, filth and cracked surfaces. Leaking roofs and unhygienic toilets make travel an ordeal for all.
Cochin Smart Mission Ltd is in charge of the Rs 5-crore renovation work which includes changing tiles, renovating toilets and improving seats. However, an alleged delay in payment to the contractor by Vyttila Mobility Hub Society (VMHS) is often disrupting the work.
"I can't believe that a major bus terminal in Kochi is functioning in such a pathetic state," said Hariharan from Thrissur, who reached the hub by a KSRTC bus on Wednesday afternoon.
"Even during the construction, authorities could have arranged temporary facilities such as toilets. Roads are in terrible shape. It is extremely difficult for passengers to walk from the bus stand to the Metro station or even up to the autorickshaw stand," he said.

A shopkeeper, who doesn't want to be named, said: "People are made to inhale dust. Standing here for half an hour can cause coughing and breathing problems," he said.
"In addition to dust and gutters, lack of water supply is also causing major inconvenience to the public," said T N Prathapan of Vyttila Action Council. He said that despite filing complaints with the corporation regarding the unhygienic conditions of the toilets — which could lead to health issues — no significant action has been taken.
Though officials did carry out an inspection, no follow-up measure was taken, he said.
"There's also a serious safety concern due to faulty electrical wiring near pillars 11 and 12," he said. Another issue is the waste being dumped on the hub premises.
Sunita Dixon, corporation councillor from the area, said that while the civic body attempted to control the dust by sprinkling water on the carriageway on sunny days, it proved futile.
"If the hub society fails to complete the work soon, I'll be forced to launch a protest," she said.
Dixon also alleged that the delay in payment to the contractor may further lag the works, for months.
VMHS MD K Gopalakrishnan said the work was expected to get over in a month. He promised that the contractor was asked to minimise inconvenience to the public.
"It is natural for people to face some difficulties during large-scale development projects in such a busy area. Complaining about it seems unreasonable. We believe the public will understand, as these works aim to provide improved facilities," he said.

Bureaucratic knots, heritage hurdles stall Karnataka's Rs 100 crore tourism push

Bengaluru: Despite the Centre sanctioning nearly Rs 100 crore under its Swadesh Darshan scheme to bolster tourism infrastructure in Karnataka, the state govt is struggling to translate plans into action due to a mixture of technical bottlenecks and political delays. Earlier this week, Union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told the Lok Sabha that projects for Udupi and Bidar districts had been approved under the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD), a component of Swadesh Darshan. However, he added, "No project at these destinations has been sanctioned, and the govt of Karnataka has been advised to obtain necessary clearances." The minister was responding to a query from Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Kota Shrinivas Poojary. While the Centre has given its nod in principle, the projects await final approvals due to objections raised by other central departments. Tourism director KV Rajendra told TOI that although detailed proposals have been submitted, regulatory hurdles remain. "While MoEF has sought a map of 1:4000 to be prepared for CRZ clearances, the NMA considers the location as too sensitive for fresh structures." The state has now roped in National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management to prepare the CRZ map for the Udupi project. "We are in talks with both central agencies and are trying to convince them," Rajendra said. "For the Bidar fort development project, the govt is trying to persuade the Centre to consider its proposal." Also, two flagship tourism initiatives proposed in Mysuru under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 are entangled in political limbo. Department sources said a Rs 2.7 crore plan to create a 'tonga ride heritage experience zone' and an 'ecological experience zone' are still awaiting the chief minister's approval. "Since it is the CM's home district, we are waiting for him to lay the foundation stone for the two projects," an official said. The heritage tonga ride aims to recreate royal-era charm by setting up five carriage stations that will ferry tourists around Mysuru Palace. The ecological experience is designed to complement the Mysuru zoo with themed installations and green trails. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Commuters express frustration as Pune shivneri bus takes longer than shared cab

Mumbai: Travelling by the Mumbai-Pune Shivneri may not be a pleasant and comfortable experience. Recently, passengers were left fuming as the journey was delayed by over two hours to travel from Mumbai to Pune on this popular intercity AC bus. "It is a complete waste of time. A shared cab would have cost Rs 400 but reached in three hours. Instead, I was sitting inside the bus, which halted at many stops en route, and the wait time was longer as well. It reached Pune in five and a half hours," recalled a passenger who boarded the bus from Dadar. "Why are there too many stops in Mumbai before the bus hits the Expressway? And then, a 20-minute scheduled halt on the Expressway?" he said. A passenger said that the bus is also not good compared to the Rs 590 fare one pays for the journey. "Imagine there is a road with no traffic jams, and the bus still prefers to halt for a long duration in Mumbai after leaving Dadar depot. It's frustrating," the passenger recalled. Sources said that the bus keeps waiting for passengers en route if seats continue to remain vacant after leaving Dadar depot. When contacted, an MSRTC official said that the matter will be looked into. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The official further said that if one booked a Pune bus via Atal Setu, there were no issues or complaints. "We have found that buses using the route through Vashi bridge-Nerul-Kharghar are facing this problem of unwarranted stoppages en route," he said. The MSRTC wants to deploy more buses on the Atal Setu to expedite journeys for passengers in the near future. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Passengers have also complained of rash driving by some of the drivers on the Expressway and other roads. It may be recalled that a few months ago, 12 passengers of a Mumbai-Pune Shivneri bus escaped unharmed in a mishap in which the bus climbed on the road divider in Sion. The e-Shivneri bus started from the Dadar bus stand around 5.30 am, and when it was crossing the flyover near Sion police station, the bus swerved a bit and jumped on the divider. While the exact cause is not known, officials said that the driver was not drunk nor "half asleep" when the incident occurred, an MSRTC official claimed after the incident. The driver was, however, taken off duty for 10 days. Passengers have also complained in the past about a few cases of drivers speaking on mobile phones. 103% rise in booking e-tickets in Khurda Road rly division in 1st quarter: Data

Bhubaneswar: Use of paperless general and platform tickets through the unreserved ticketing system (UTS) on the mobile platform has seen a 103% rise in the first quarter of 2025-26 compared to the similar period in 2024-25, according to latest data released by the Khurda Road railway division. The railway division oversees major stations like Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda and Berhampur. From April to June, the division issued 1.83 lakh paperless general and platform tickets, compared to 90,005 tickets issued in the first quarter of 2024-25. "Because of the rise in booking paperless tickets, stations are now witnessing a reduction in queues for unreserved tickets at booking counters," said an official. During 2024-25, the division issued 5.35 lakh paperless general and platform tickets through the UTS on mobile, serving over 22.41 lakh passengers and generating a revenue of Rs 4.76 crore. In 2023-24, it issued 2.56 lakh tickets for 14.81 lakh passengers, generating Rs 2.82 crore in revenue. In 2022-23, around 1.27 lakh tickets were issued for 8.95 lakh passengers, generating Rs 1.53 crore. "This year-on-year growth shows that people want hassle-free services without standing in queues for platform or general tickets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This exponential growth is attributed to wider public acceptance, user-friendly technology and enhanced payment options such as UPI-based QR code transactions, leading to shorter queues and faster processing," read an official statement. The statement said passengers can now book journey, season and platform tickets directly from their smartphones, leveraging the UTS on mobile platform, eliminating the need for ticket printouts. "The app is available in Hindi, English, and regional languages, ensuring ease of use even for first-time users. Tickets are delivered directly to the app and can be shown to ticket-checking staff using the 'show ticket' option — no hard copy needed," an official source said. An official said passengers can now book unreserved tickets up to three days in advance for journeys above 200km and purchase half-yearly and yearly season tickets, apart from platform tickets, with ease. "The app supports multiple digital payment methods and is compatible with Android, iOS and Windows smartphones," the official added.
