State exploring if conviction age in drug peddling cases can be reduced to 16: Fadnavis
Replying to a calling-attention motion on the issue of drug peddling in Maharashtra, Fadnavis said his government would consult with the Centre to check if existing laws can be amended to plug loopholes that allow children to be used in drug peddling. He added that the government is also chalking out a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the deportation of foreign nationals involved in the crime.
The matter was raised in the assembly by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA from Bandra East, Varun Sardesai, who claimed there was rampant drug peddling and cartelisation in areas such as Behrampada, Golibar Road and Bharat Nagar. He alleged that Nigerian nationals are largely engaged in drug peddling, and the police do not even dare to attempt to act against them due to the dense population in slums. Sardesai also claimed that the peddlers engage minors aged 15-16 years in order to avoid police action.
Acknowledging the issue, Fadnavis said his government would explore whether the age of criminal responsibility in drug-peddling cases can be reduced from 18 to 16. The state government is mulling amending the existing laws in consultation with the central government to make this happen, he added, while assuring that strict action would be taken against drug peddling in Bandra.
'To curb the involvement of minors in the supply of drugs, we are studying whether the age for taking action for drug peddling could be reduced by two years. Similarly, we are making changes in the law to hold the kingpin responsible if minors are engaged in drug deals,' he said.
Fadanvis also said the state government would formulate an SOP for the deportation of the Nigerians and other foreign nationals involved in drug peddling. 'The foreign nationals booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act commit minor crimes to avoid deportation and stay back here. Until these trivial cases are decided, they escape deportation. We have been in touch with the central government regarding the deportation of foreign nationals. The central government has asked us to deport these foreign nationals involved in drug peddling, by withdrawing the minor cases against them,' he said.
The Maharashtra police have also been conducting awareness drives in schools and colleges to curb the consumption and supply of drugs among the youth, the chief minister added.
Earlier this month, the state government tabled a bill to amend the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999, to bring drug peddlers dealing with commercial quantities of banned narcotic substances under its ambit.

"During the meeting, the CM stressed that the capital's progress towards a 'Developed Delhi' will not be impeded by financial constraints, and noted that her govt had an adequate budget while the Centre was also providing full support," said an official, adding that the CM clearly mentioned she would continue to review the projects regularly to ensure their timely completion. She also expressed satisfaction with the success of the digital governance system and emphasised promoting it further, along with ensuring the full implementation of the e-office system. She said that 119 of 199 departments had adopted the system, while the remaining ones would also join the e-office system soon to ensure the complete digitalisation of offices.

MUMBAI: On a day the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation reiterated it would not withdraw its order to shut slaughterhouses and meat shops on Aug 15, more corporations - Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Nashik and Jalgaon - issued similar directives. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said the decision was not taken by the Mahayuti govt but by an earlier govt in 1988 and that everyone was free to eat what they wanted. "The state govt is not interested in deciding who eats what. We have lots of issues before us," he said when asked about opposition to the Independence Day slaughter ban. Protests have grown, with Dy CM Ajit Pawar also saying it wasn't right. Fadnavis said a govt resolution on slaughter bans on certain days was issued in 1988 and had been in force since. "Even I did not know about it till I read about it in the media," he said, calling the issue overblown. He said municipal corporations told him they take this decision every year, including when Uddhav Thackeray was CM. Referring to a remark by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut that the CM was making Maharashtra "impotent" with such a ban, Fadnavis said without naming him, "Some people have started calling those eating vegetarian food impotent. Odisha records one of the lowest inflation rates in June
1 2 Kendrapada: Odisha recorded one of the lowest inflation rates in the country in June 2025, with rural inflation at 0.46% and urban inflation at 0.64%, well below the national averages of 1.72% and 2.56%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI). The figures were shared by B L Verma, minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He was replying to a query from BJD MP Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, noting that the department monitors daily prices of 38 essential food commodities. Price data is collected from 566 monitoring centres nationwide, including 28 in the state. Verma said prices of essential food items remain stable and under control. He highlighted the price stabilisation fund (PSF) scheme, launched in 2014-15 to shield consumers from extreme volatility in agri-horticultural commodity prices and ensure affordability. In 2018–19, the Centre approved the state govt's proposal to create a Rs 100 crore state-level price stabilisation fund, releasing Rs 25 crore as the first instalment of the Centre's share.
